Simulation or cohort models? Continuous time simulation and discretized Markov models to estimate cost-effectiveness
The choice of model design for decision analytic models in cost-effectiveness analysis has been the subject of discussion. The current work addresses this issue by noting that, when time is to be explicitly modelled, we need to represent phenomena occurring in continuous time. Multistate models evaluated in continuous time might be used but closed form solutions of expected time in each state may not exist or may be difficult to obtain. Two approximations can then be used for costeffectiveness estimation: (1) simulation models, where continuous time estimates are obtained through Monte Carlo simulation, and (2) discretized models. This work draws recommendations on their use by showing that, when these alternative models can be applied, it is preferable to implement a cohort discretized model than a simulation model. Whilst the bias from the first can be minimized by reducing the cycle length, the second is inherently stochastic. Even though specialized literature advocates this framework, the current practice in economic evaluation is to define clinically meaningful cycle lengths for discretized models, disregarding potential biases.

The variable behavioural and physiological outcome of social challenges in two species of Brazilian damselfish
Stress, as a reaction to an uncomfortable stimulus, promotes a set of physiological and/or behavioral responses to overcome potential threats and restore equilibrium. These responses vary among species according to magnitude, time of exposure and nature of the stressor. Territorial species, such as damselfishes, may experience an increase on cortisol levels by the continuous intrusions on their territory by other fishes, which they may chase. Ectoparasites are also capable of inducing stress by feeding on their host blood. To lower ectoparasite loads, infected fish - clients - may visit cleaning stations, however the decrease in stress levels promoted by cleaners is not always certain or obvious. While territorial species with a cleaning station on their territory may profit by having an easy access to cleaners, they may also have an increase of intrusions by other potential clients. The present study aimed to understand the outcome of these interactions and also try to learn if variables such as ectoparasite loads and/or territory intrusions influence cortisol levels in territorial species. Territories of two damselfish, Stegastes fuscus and Stegastes pictus from one rocky reef in Arraial do Cabo, Brazil, were sampled. Data about intrusions in the territory, agonistic and feeding behavior, ectoparasite loads and territory area were collected and analyzed. Furthermore, a whole-body cortisol analysis was performed. Although intrusions frequency did not present significant differences between damselfish species, S. pictus territories were invaded by larger intruders. Regarding agonistic behavior S. fuscus was significantly more reactive when compared with S. pictus, chasing more intruders from their territories. Furthermore, chase frequency was found to be negatively affected by size of the intruder, the larger the intruders the less they were chased. No significant differences were found in ectoparasite loads between damselfish species. It has been found in this study that cleaning stations seem to have a significant effect in intrusions frequency in damselfish territories. However, none of these variables appeared to influence cortisol levels. These results should lead to further complementary studies, which would add more information on the behavior of key territorial species and better understanding of the variables that may influence stress in fish
The Problem that Has a Name: On “Mama Grizzlies” and Conservative Feminism
Despite an overall tendency to dismiss some of the struggles associated with second-wave feminism under the theoretical assumption of post-feminism, numerous issues related to women and their rights are yet to be resolved. In the USA, problems such as unequal payment and lack of proper work-family support, together with a steadfast conservative endeavor to hinder reproductive rights, prove the urgency of feminist critical stances. While fostering a culture of life, several conservative groups have been appropriating feminism in order to endorse their pro-life policies; Sarah Palin, for instance, while speaking at an antiabortion gathering, recently sparked a heated debate due to her use of the terms “mama grizzlies” and “new conservative feminism”. By focusing on Palin’s speech, this essay intends to explore how feminism is being redefined by U.S. conservative women so as to reinforce patriotism and reinstate an idealized and institutionalized motherhood
Development of a small robot prototype for educational purposes
The project consisted of simulating an Automated Guided Vehicles (AGV) system and
creating a model of an AGV that will serve as a teaching kit for future generations. The
simulation was performed in SIMTWO, a realistic robotics simulator. Three simulations
were built of increasing complexity starting from the simple line movements to AGV
systems. It was plotted in each simulation the most important graphs to present the reader
and explain what has happened. Moreover CAD files were created of the AGV using 3D
printing and assembled. Then, a software that runs on the Arduino, was developed, and
it uses a six-byte combination of symbols and numbers to control the AGV.O projecto consistiu na simulação de um sistema de Automated Guided Vehicles (AGV)

The role of knowledge networks in facilitating the creation of climate information services
nowledge networks are collections of individuals and teams who work together across organizational, spatial and disciplinary boundaries to invent and share a body of knowledge. Climate services are tools and application that support decision-making by transforming raw climate data into tailored information. They call for co-development practices in place and for successful collaboration between different stakeholders. Knowledge networks for climate services are intermediaries that facilitate the interaction between upstream (providers) and downstream (user) actors operating at various scales (local, national, regional and supranational). They assist the decision-making process of a wide set of users by creating windows of opportunity and by delivering usable climate information. The aim of this work is to frame and assess the efficiency of knowledge networks for climate services in promoting innovation and facilitate its diffusion. First, we characterize knowledge networks learning from insights of a multidisciplinary literature. Second, we analyse the purpose, the process and the audience of each knowledge network for climate services by screening their programmatic documents. We then assess the efficiency of knowledge networks by performing content analysis of interviews with knowledge network managers and by checking for the existence of inconsistencies or gaps with the initial objectives. We find knowledge networks for climate services pursue four objectives: coordination, innovation promotion, science-policy interface and support to members. We also find inadequate tools to monitor the members activities, but a strong positioning within the climate services domain. On the communication side, knowledge networks for climate services mostly interact with developers of climate services but they face challenges in sharing the members’ activities with users. Our work fills a significant knowledge gap and helps providing new tools of performance assessment in absence of a clearly defined methodology. The identification of bottlenecks and under-performing mechanisms in the climate information services sphere allows the elaboration of strategies to improve the status quo and facilitates the diffusion of these innovations
Face Your Fears: Cleaning Gobies Inspect Predators despite Being Stressed by Them
Social stressors typically elicit two distinct behavioural responses in vertebrates: an active response (i.e., “fight or flight”) or behavioural inhibition (i.e., freezing). Here, we report an interesting exception to this dichotomy in a Caribbean cleaner fish, which interacts with a wide variety of reef fish clients, including predatory species. Cleaning gobies appraise predatory clients as potential threat and become stressed in their presence, as evidenced by their higher cortisol levels when exposed to predatory rather than to non-predatory clients. Nevertheless, cleaning gobies neither flee nor freeze in response to dangerous clients but instead approach predators faster (both in captivity and in the wild), and interact longer with these clients than with non-predatory clients (in the wild). We hypothesise that cleaners interrupt the potentially harmful physiological consequences elicited by predatory clients by becoming increasingly proactive and by reducing the time elapsed between client approach and the start of the interaction process. The activation of a stress response may therefore also be responsible for the longer cleaning service provided by these cleaners to predatory clients in the wild. Future experimental studies may reveal similar patterns in other social vertebrate species when, for instance, individuals approach an opponent for reconciliation after a conflict
How TripAdvisor’s reviewers level of expertise influence their online rating behaviour and the usefulness of reviews
The internet has improved the buying behaviour of customers. The development of
technologies has led to the dissemination of opinions on social networks where customers
buy goods and services. These comments on social networks started to be a part of the
purchasing process. Until a few years ago, customers used to choose their itineraries based
on tourist guides or brochures. Nowadays, customers’ reviews have changed the way a
destination is portrayed, enhancing the description of a product or a service to a level that
not even the supplier was able to reach before. There are different types of reviewers. The
aim of this study is to identify both reviews, experts and non-expert reviewers and analyse
the way they write their reviews. Reviews of five hotels taken from the TripAdvisor
website were used in order to conduct this study. After analyzing a great set of variables,
the results show that there is not much different on the amount of positive/negative
reviews written by a reviewer, however, there is a difference in the deeper meaning of a
review when it is positive than when it is negative. The expert reviewer tends to be more
emotional when writing positive reviews than negative reviews. Regarding the usefulness
of the reviews, there is no significant difference in usefulness of a review whether is an
written by an expert reviewer or by a non-expert reviewer. The results also indicate that
being an expert does not influence the rating a reviewer gives to a hotel stay either. The
study was conducted by using Lexalytics program to analyze a Natural Language
Processing (NLP) used to classify reviews according to their polarity. With this study, a
new research in study was filled. This study gives insights on the polarity of a review
depending on the type of reviewer. The results of this study are also important for hotel
managers in order for them to understand the type of guest in house.O desenvolvimento da tecnologia, com ênfase na internet e nos seus desenvolvimentos
Relativamente a
Probability of Collision of satellites and space debris for short-term encounters: Rederivation and fast-to-compute upper and lower bounds
The proliferation of space debris in LEO has become a major concern for the
space industry. With the growing interest in space exploration, the prediction
of potential collisions between objects in orbit has become a crucial issue. It
is estimated that, in orbit, there are millions of fragments a few millimeters
in size and thousands of inoperative satellites and discarded rocket stages.
Given the high speeds that these fragments can reach, even fragments a few
millimeters in size can cause fractures in a satellite's hull or put a serious
crack in the window of a space shuttle. The conventional method proposed by
Akella and Alfriend in 2000 remains widely used to estimate the probability of
collision in short-term encounters. Given the small period of time, it is
assumed that, during the encounter: (1) trajectories are represented by
straight lines with constant velocity; (2) there is no velocity uncertainty and
the position exhibits a stationary distribution throughout the encounter; and
(3) position uncertainties are independent and represented by Gaussian
distributions. This study introduces a novel derivation based on first
principles that naturally allows for tight and fast upper and lower bounds for
the probability of collision. We tested implementations of both probability and
bound computations with the original and our formulation on a real CDM dataset
used in ESA's Collision Avoidance Challenge. Our approach reduces the
calculation of the probability to two one-dimensional integrals and has the
potential to significantly reduce the processing time compared to the
traditional method, from 80% to nearly real-time
