The formation of the first galaxies and the transition to low-mass star formation
The formation of the first galaxies at redshifts z ~ 10-15 signaled the
transition from the simple initial state of the universe to one of ever
increasing complexity. We here review recent progress in understanding their
assembly process with numerical simulations, starting with cosmological initial
conditions and modelling the detailed physics of star formation. In this
context we emphasize the importance and influence of selecting appropriate
initial conditions for the star formation process. We revisit the notion of a
critical metallicity resulting in the transition from primordial to present-day
initial mass functions and highlight its dependence on additional cooling
mechanisms and the exact initial conditions. We also review recent work on the
ability of dust cooling to provide the transition to present-day low-mass star
formation. In particular, we highlight the extreme conditions under which this
transition mechanism occurs, with violent fragmentation in dense gas resulting

Gilt Edge Mine NPL Site Lawrence County, South Dakota: Final Report for the Climatic Evaluation (Deadwood and Lead, South Dakota)
This document serves as the final report for the climatic evaluation for the Ruby Gulch waste rock dump cap at the Gilt Edge Mine Site, Lawrence County, South Dakota (SD). This project was a collaborative effort between CDM Federal Programs Corporation and South Dakota State University (SDSU) under the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Region VIII response action contract. This report includes climatic analyses, raw weather data, and conclusions. In 1998 the Gilt Edge Mine near Deadwood, SD was abandoned and the reclamation of the mining site was halted. In 2000 SD requested that the EPA place the Gilt Edge Mine Site on the Superfund National Priorities List. SDSU through the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station (SDAES) was asked to assist the State of South Dakota and the EPA in the development of a remediation and revegetation plan for the abandoned Gilt Edge Mine Site.The objectives of this report are: 1. Detail and summarize the climatic information for the Gilt Edge Mine site area. 2. Analyze the data for application for soil and vegetation purposes 3. Archive the raw weather data from Deadwood and Lead, SD.This report highlights the available climatic data for two weather stations near the Gilt Edge Mine Superfund Site (GEMSS). The weather stations studied were Deadwood and Lead, SD. The weather station data for Deadwood covered the years 1943 through 1999 and the weather station data for Lead covered the years 1909 through 1999. The weather data summarized in this report include daily temperature (maximum, minimum, and average), monthly temperature (maximum, minimum, and average), numbers of days at critical warm and cold temperatures, precipitation (daily, daily maximums, 7-day maximums, monthly, monthly maximums, snowfall, and number of days per year at critical precipitation levels), growing degree days (40 OF basis), growing season length (28 OF basis). Deadwood, SD climatic data is summarized in Table A. Lead, SD climatic data is summarized in Table B

Increased glycation and oxidative damage to apolipoprotein B100 of LDL cholesterol in patients with type 2 diabetes and effect of metformin
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to investigate whether apolipoprotein B100 of LDL suffers increased damage by glycation, oxidation, and nitration in patients with type 2 diabetes, including patients receiving metformin therapy.
RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS For this study, 32 type 2 diabetic patients and 21 healthy control subjects were recruited; 13 diabetic patients were receiving metformin therapy (median dose: 1.50 g/day). LDL was isolated from venous plasma by ultracentrifugation, delipidated, digested, and analyzed for protein glycation, oxidation, and nitration adducts by stable isotopic dilution analysis tandem mass spectrometry.
RESULTS Advanced glycation end product (AGE) content of apolipoprotein B100 of LDL from type 2 diabetic patients was higher than from healthy subjects: arginine-derived AGE, 15.8 vs. 5.3 mol% (P < 0.001); and lysine-derived AGE, 2.5 vs. 1.5 mol% (P < 0.05). Oxidative damage, mainly methionine sulfoxide residues, was also increased: 2.5 vs. 1.1 molar equivalents (P < 0.001). 3-Nitrotyrosine content was decreased: 0.04 vs. 0.12 mol% (P < 0.05). In diabetic patients receiving metformin therapy, arginine-derived AGE and methionine sulfoxide were lower than in patients not receiving metformin: 19.3 vs. 8.9 mol% (P < 0.01) and 2.9 vs. 1.9 mol% (P < 0.05), respectively; 3-nitrotyrosine content was higher: 0.10 vs. 0.03 mol% (P < 0.05). Fructosyl-lysine residue content correlated positively with fasting plasma glucose. Arginine-derived AGE residue contents were intercorrelated and also correlated positively with methionine sulfoxide.
CONCLUSIONS Patients with type 2 diabetes had increased arginine-derived AGEs and oxidative damage in apolipoprotein B100 of LDL. This was lower in patients receiving metformin therapy, which may contribute to decreased oxidative damage, atherogenicity, and cardiovascular disease
Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae resides intracellularly within porcine epithelial cells
© 2018, The Author(s). Enzootic pneumonia incurs major economic losses to pork production globally. The primary pathogen and causative agent, Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae, colonises ciliated epithelium and disrupts mucociliary function predisposing the upper respiratory tract to secondary pathogens. Alleviation of disease is reliant on antibiotics, vaccination, and sound animal husbandry, but none are effective at eliminating M. hyopneumoniae from large production systems. Sustainable pork production systems strive to lower reliance on antibiotics but lack of a detailed understanding of the pathobiology of M. hyopneumoniae has curtailed efforts to develop effective mitigation strategies. M. hyopneumoniae is considered an extracellular pathogen. Here we show that M. hyopneumoniae associates with integrin β1 on the surface of epithelial cells via interactions with surface-bound fibronectin and initiates signalling events that stimulate pathogen uptake into clathrin-coated vesicles (CCVs) and caveosomes. These early events allow M. hyopneumoniae to exploit an intracellular lifestyle by commandeering the endosomal pathway. Specifically, we show: (i) using a modified gentamicin protection assay that approximately 8% of M. hyopneumoniae cells reside intracellularly; (ii) integrin β1 expression specifically co-localises with the deposition of fibronectin precisely where M. hyopneumoniae cells assemble extracellularly; (iii) anti-integrin β1 antibodies block entry of M. hyopneumoniae into porcine cells; and (iv) M. hyopneumoniae survives phagolysosomal fusion, and resides within recycling endosomes that are trafficked to the cell membrane. Our data creates a paradigm shift by challenging the long-held view that M. hyopneumoniae is a strict extracellular pathogen and calls for in vivo studies to determine if M. hyopneumoniae can traffic to extrapulmonary sites in commercially-reared pigs
Dust observations of Comet 9P/Tempel 1 at the time of the Deep Impact
On 4 July 2005 at 05:52 UT, the impactor of NASA's Deep Impact (DI) mission
crashed into comet 9P/Tempel 1 with a velocity of about 10 km/s. The material
ejected by the impact expanded into the normal coma, produced by ordinary
cometary activity.
The characteristics of the non-impact coma and cloud produced by the impact
were studied by observations in the visible wavelengths and in the near-IR. The
scattering characteristics of the "normal" coma of solid particles were studied
by comparing images in various spectral regions, from the UV to the near-IR.
For the non-impact coma, a proxy of the dust production has been measured in
various spectral regions. The presence of sublimating grains has been detected.
Their lifetime was found to be about 11 hours. Regarding the cloud produced by
the impact, the total geometric cross section multiplied by the albedo was
measured as a function of the color and time. The projected velocity appeared
to obey a Gaussian distribution with the average velocity of the order of 115
m/s. By comparing the observations taken about 3 hours after the impact, we
have found a strong decrease in the cross section in J filter, while that in Ks
remained almost constant. This is interpreted as the result of sublimation of
grains dominated by particles of sizes of the order of some microns.Comment: Accepted by A&
Detection of CN gas in Interstellar Object 2I/Borisov
The detection of Interstellar Objects passing through the Solar System offers
the promise of constraining the physical and chemical processes involved in
planetary formation in other extrasolar systems. While the effect of outgassing
by 1I/2017 U1 ('Oumuamua) was dynamically observed, no direct detection of the
ejected material was made. The discovery of the active interstellar comet
2I/Borisov means spectroscopic investigations of the sublimated ices is
possible for this object. We report the first detection of gas emitted by an
interstellar comet via the near-UV emission of CN from 2I/Borisov at a
heliocentric distance of = 2.7 au on 2019 September 20. The production rate
was found to be Q(CN) = s, using a simple
Haser model with an outflow velocity of 0.5 km s. No other emission was
detected, with an upper limit to the production rate of C of
s. The spectral reflectance slope of the dust coma over
\AA\ \AA \ is steeper than at longer wavelengths, as
found for other comets. Broad band photometry on 2019 September 19 gave a
dust production rate of cm. Modelling of the observed gas and
dust production rates constrains the nuclear radius to km assuming
reasonable nuclear properties. Overall, we find the gas, dust and nuclear
properties for the first active Interstellar Object are similar to normal Solar

Two-dimensional solar spectropolarimetry with the KIS/IAA Visible Imaging Polarimeter
Spectropolarimetry at high spatial and spectral resolution is a basic tool to
characterize the magnetic properties of the solar atmosphere. We introduce the
KIS/IAA Visible Imaging Polarimeter (VIP), a new post-focus instrument that
upgrades the TESOS spectrometer at the German VTT into a full vector
polarimeter. VIP is a collaboration between the KIS and the IAA. We describe
the optical setup of VIP, the data acquisition procedure, and the calibration
of the spectropolarimetric measurements. We show examples of data taken between
2005 and 2008 to illustrate the potential of the instrument. VIP is capable of
measuring the four Stokes profiles of spectral lines in the range from 420 to
700 nm with a spatial resolution better than 0.5". Lines can be sampled at 40
wavelength positions in 60 s, achieving a noise level of about 2 x 10E-3 with
exposure times of 300 ms and pixel sizes of 0.17" x 0.17" (2 x 2 binning). The
polarization modulation is stable over periods of a few days, ensuring high
polarimetric accuracy. The excellent spectral resolution of TESOS allows the
use of sophisticated data analysis techniques such as Stokes inversions. One of
the first scientific results of VIP presented here is that the ribbon-like
magnetic structures of the network are associated with a distinct pattern of
net circular polarization away from disk center. VIP performs
spectropolarimetric measurements of solar magnetic fields at a spatial
resolution that is only slightly worse than that of the Hinode
spectropolarimeter, while providing a 2D field field of view and the
possibility to observe up to four spectral regions sequentially with high
cadence. VIP can be used as a stand-alone instrument or in combination with
other spectropolarimeters and imaging systems of the VTT for extended

A strategy to characterize the LISA-Pathfinder cold gas thruster system
