Understanding the argumentative process and its construction is fundamental in a teaching and learning environment focused on science education and the development of citizenship. Thus, this article is dedicated to analyzing the effectiveness of implementing the Mediated Learning Experience (MLE), as proposed by Feuerstein (1990), as a pedagogical strategy to stimulate argumentative protagonism among 41 sixth grade students in the year 2023, with an emphasis on understanding the shape of planet Earth. The data presented was obtained through one of the pedagogical sequences developed as part of the main author's doctoral research. Both the research and this article are based on the qualitative paradigm. The activity was applied to the students, and the written productions were collected and submitted to qualitative analysis, following the guidelines of Yin (2016). The results show that 26.81% of the students were able to construct an argumentative text, while 56.09% were able to list elements pertinent to argumentation. On the other hand, 14.63% developed incomplete arguments, and 2.43% did not complete the activity. This data indicates that the MAS proved to be effective in stimulating the production of written arguments by the majority of the students involved in the research. &nbsp

Grid data mining strategies for outcome prediction in distributed intensive care units

    Get PDF
Previous work developed to predict the outcome of patients in the context of intensive care units brought to the light some requirements like the need to deal with distributed data sources. Those data sources can be used to induce local prediction models and those models can in turn be used to induce global models more accurate and more general than the local models. This paper introduces a distributed data mining approach suited to grid computing environments based on a supervised learning classifier system. Five different tactics are explored for constructing the global model in a Distributed Data Mining (DDM) approach: Generalized Classifier Method (GCM); Specific Classifier Method (SCM); Weighed Classifier Method (WCM); Majority Voting Method (MVM); and Model Sampling Method (MSM). Experimental tests were conducted with a real world data set from the intensive care medicine. The results demonstrate that the performance of DDM methods is very competitive when compared with the centralized methods.

Telework is a reality more and more present in developed countries, having been tried by different kinds of companies. This research aimed to understand how and why companies of call center and contact center use telework to provide their services. The four companies covered represent 92% of the population of this service in Brazil, through residential teleworkers. The method of qualitative and quantitative study was used with a combination of the method of case study and survey. The research findings revealed that residential telework has been used with great balance. The reasons for the use of this modality were cost reduction, high productivity, customer services’ quality improvement, the ability to offer better quality of life for residential and teleworkers with disabilities by providing them with job opportunities and social and digital inclusion.O teletrabalho é uma realidade cada vez mais presente nos países desenvolvidos, tendo sido experimentado por diferentes tipos de empresas.

Lack of association between TLR4 rs4986790 polymorphism and risk of cardiovascular disease in patients with rheumatoid arthritis

This is copy of an article published in the DNA and cell biology 2012 © Mary Ann Liebert, Inc.; DNA and cell bilogy is available online at: http://online.liebertpub.comRheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic inflammatory disease associated with increased cardiovascular (CV) mortality. Toll-like receptor-4 (TLR4) activates the innate immune response via NF-kB pathway and mitogenactivated protein kinase signaling, leading to expression of proinflammatory cytokines and chemokines. The G allele of TLR4 rs4986790 (+ 896A > G, Asp299Gly) gene polymorphism has been implicated in reduction of risk of atherosclerosis. In this study, 1481 RA patients fulfilling the 1987 American College of Rheumatology (ACR) criteria were genotyped for the rs4986790 TLR4 variant to determine the influence of this variant in the risk of CV events in these patients. Also, HLA-DRB1 status was determined using molecular based methods. Moreover, potential influence of rs4986790 variant in the development of subclinical atherosclerosis was assessed in a subgroup of RA patients with no history of CV events by the measurement of surrogate markers of subclinical atherosclerosis. No statistically significant differences in allele or genotype frequencies for the rs4986790 variant between RA patients who experienced CV events or not were found. Likewise, no significant association between this gene variant and any of the surrogate markers of subclinical atherosclerosis was found. In summary, results in our study do not support the hypothesis that the rs4986790 (+ 896A > G, Asp299Gly) TLR4 variant may influence predisposition for subclinical atherosclerosis and clinically evident CV disease in RA patientsThis study was supported by two grants from Fondo de Investigaciones Sanitarias PI06-0024 and PS09/00748 (Spain).
