dissertationMechanosensory hair cell damage leads to permanent hearing loss. The zebrafish mechanosensory organs (neuromasts) are an excellent model for the study of hair cell regeneration. Neuromasts have a central group of sensory hair cells surrounded by support cells and the outermost mantle cells. While adult mammalian hair cells cannot regenerate, neuromast hair cells have the ability to do so via support cell proliferation. In this study, we used proliferation assays and lineage analyses that demonstrated the existence of proliferative compartments in the posterior lateral line neuromasts where support cells either self-renew or differentiate. These spatially restricted lineage decisions within the progenitor pool resemble the spatial heterogeneities within the intestinal crypt or the hair follicle niche that guide stem cell transit amplification or differentiation. In addition, we identified the mantle cells as a quiescent support cell pool that do not proliferate in response to selective hair cell ablation, but that re-enter the cell cycle when hair cell and support cells numbers are drastically reduced. By combining our lineage analysis with gene expression analyses, genetic manipulations, and the use of chemical inhibitors, we were able to dissect the roles of Notch and Wnt signaling during homeostasis and regeneration. We demonstrate that Notch signaling restricts hair cell differentiation and maintains the spatial pattern of support cell proliferation through Wnt signaling inhibition. iv Thus, Notch-Wnt signaling interactions are required to maintain pools of amplifying support cells in the poles and maintain tissue homeostasis by balancing self-renewal and differentiation

One of the most essential limiting factors of cocoa (Theobroma cacao L.) productivity worldwide is pests and diseases. Each of the major production regions has its specific pests and diseases. Reported yield losses range from minor to almost 100 per cent. In Alto Beni, located in the Amazonian watershed of the department La Paz, Bolivia, the Research Institute of Organic Agriculture (FiBL) and its local partners are addressing several problems of cocoa producers using a participatory technology development approach. Problems were identified in a participatory way and are, in order of priority, i) to reduce the incidence of pests and diseases, mainly the cocoa mirid (Monalonion dissimulatum) and Frosty Pod Rot (Moniliophthora roreri); ii) to evaluate the productivity of different cocoa varieties (local selections, introduced clones), and iii) to document the management practices and plantation layouts of high yielding cocoa farmers. In order to develop novel biological pest control measures, both the knowledge of cocoa yield development in the course of the harvest period, as well as the dynamics of pests and diseases are of great interest. Data from three different research activities of the mentioned project are analysed for yield development, the appearance, and the incidence of pests and diseases, where available. The research data are from: a) On-farm trials in multiple locations which were established in 2004. The performance of 16 cocoa varieties has been assessed for 3 years (2010–2012). b) Four high yielding cocoa farmers’ fields (2012 only). c) A long-term field experiment assessing the sustainability of five cocoa production systems (2011 and 2012). The trial investigates the influence of monocultures and different agroforestry systems under organic and conventional management on the yield development, among other agronomic, economic and environmental parameters

Hybrid disturbance rejection control of dynamic bipedal robots

This paper presents a disturbance rejection control strategy for hybrid dynamic systems exposed to model uncertainties and external disturbances. The focus of this work is the gait control of dynamic bipedal robots. The proposed control strategy integrates continuous and discrete control actions. The continuous control action uses a novel model-based active disturbance rejection control (ADRC) approach to track gait trajectory references. The discrete control action resets the gait trajectory references after the impact produced by the robot’s support-leg exchange to maintain a zero tracking error. A Poincaré return map is used to search asymptotic stable periodic orbits in an extended hybrid zero dynamics (EHZD). The EHZD reflects a lower-dimensional representation of the full hybrid dynamics with uncertainties and disturbances. A physical bipedal robot testbed, referred to as Saurian, is fabricated for validation purposes. Numerical simulation and physical experiments show the robustness of the proposed control strategy against external disturbances and model uncertainties that affect both the swing motion phase and the support-leg exchange

Time Series Heterogeneous Co-execution on CPU+GPU

Time series motif (similarities) and discords discovery is one of the most important and challenging problems nowadays for time series analytics. We use an algorithm called “scrimp” that excels in collecting the relevant information of time series by reducing the computational complexity of the searching. Starting from the sequential algorithm we develop parallel alternatives based on a variety of scheduling policies that target different computing devices in a system that integrates a CPU multicore and an embedded GPU. These policies are named Dynamic -using Intel TBB- and Static -using C++11 threads- when targeting the CPU, and they are compared to a heterogeneous adaptive approach named LogFit -using Intel TBB and OpenCL- when targeting the co-execution on the CPU and GPU.Universidad de Málaga. Entrepreneurship can be defined as the execution of a project or purpose where the person is fully prepared to take the risk and carry out the project. In Peru, business entrepreneurship is highly recognized, at the Latin American level, it is the first country with the highest perception, in relation to the simplicity when starting a business; and the third with respect to the faculties and competencies, as well as with greater possibilities for the citizen to become an entrepreneur. The present study determines the relationship between the entrepreneurial profile and the entrepreneurial vision of university students. The research is developed under a quantitative approach with a descriptive correlational scope, the sample was represented by 135 students enrolled in the faculty of business sciences of the Program of Study Administration and Human Resources of the Continental University in the academic cycle 2022- 2. A Pearson correlation coefficient of 0.78 was obtained, which indicates that there is a positive correlation between the variables of the study, such as theentrepreneurial profile and the entrepreneurial vision of university students. This proves the research hypothesis: the entrepreneurial profile has a positive correspondence with the entrepreneurial vision of the students of the faculty of business sciences of the Program of Study Administration and Human Resources of the Universidad Continental in the academic cycle 2022- 2.El emprendimiento puede definirse como la ejecución de un proyecto o propósito donde la persona se encuentra totalmente preparada para arriesgarse y efectuar el proyecto. Active Disturbance Rejection Control based on Generalized Proportional Integral Observer to Control a Bipedal Robot with Five Degrees of Freedom

An Active Disturbance Rejection Control based on Generalized Proportional Integral observer (ADRC with GPI observer) was developed to control the gait of a bipedal robot with five degrees of freedom. The bipedal robot used is a passive point feet which produces an underactuated dynamic walking. A virtual holonomic constraint is imposed to generate online smooth trajectories which were used as references of the control system. The proposed control strategy is tested through numerical simulation on a task of forward walking with the robot exposed to external disturbances. The performance of ADRC with GPI observer strategy is compared with a feedback linearization with proportional-derivative control. A stability test consisting on analyzing the existence of limit cycles using the Poincaré's method revealed that asymptotically stable walking was achieved. The proposed control strategy effectively rejects the external disturbances and keeps the robot in a stable dynamic walking
