The objective of this work is to describe and analyze the main features of the Argentine tobacco (Agro Industrial Complex) on the landmark tobacco areas of Perico de el Carmen (Jujuy) and Alto Uruguay (Misiones). In this work of counterpoint, we argue that since age ’70 till today, there have been a series of important changes in the production process, which they have subordinated under varying degrees of verticality employees and rural producers in both provinces. To account for these processes, we work with different sources of information, combining quantitative and qualitative strategies among which we note the observations and interviews in tobacco areas of Jujuy in 2007 and 2010, and from 2007 to 2011 in Misiones.Fil: Diez, María Carolina. Leading, learning, and teaching: an exploration of instructor leadership in a retention intervention program

    Get PDF
There is a distressing dilemma in higher education concerning the increase in student attrition rates (Angelino, Williams, & Natvig, 2007; Hagedorn, 2006; Kramer, 2007; Lau, 2003, Seidman, 2005; Tinto, 2006). The seminal query of this study asks what higher education institutions are doing to effectively retain these students and secure student success. At a public university in the southeastern part of the United States, appreciative advising is utilized as a teaching strategy in a retention intervention program to answer this question. Developed as a theoretical framework by academic advisors where focus is on a student's strengths instead of on weaknesses (Bloom & Martin, 2002), appreciative advising was integrated into a curriculum designed to empower students to recover and retain academic good standing (Bloom, Hutson, & He, 2008; Bloom, Hutson, He, & Robinson, 2011; Hutson, 2006). This empowerment suggests a relationship between classroom instructor leadership and student self-leadership. The purpose of this study was to explore the perceptions of classroom instructors and how they describe their teaching experiences in this retention intervention program. The researcher desired to know how these classroom instructors perceived their role, experienced instructional leadership, and sought to facilitate self-leadership in their students. Specifically, how an appreciative mindset inspired transformational leadership, encouraged transformational teaching, and aspired to impact transformational learning. Utilizing a qualitative instrumental case study design and applying an interpretivist research paradigm, a total of eleven past and current instructors were interviewed employing online Email and Instant Messaging (IM)/Chat as a means of data collection (Briggs & Coleman, 2007). Unfortunately, the data analyses revealed 9 of the 11 instructors were neither familiar with the core principles of appreciative advising nor understand its relevancy to the retention intervention program. However, the data analyses also indicated the majority of instructors did perceive their role as influencing positive change in the attitudes and behaviors of their students regardless of this deficiency in their knowledge base. This evidenced an intuitive and deductive acknowledgment of appreciative advising in the instructors' teaching experience that innately supported an appreciative mindset. It is through the participants' appreciative mindset that appreciative advising and instructor leadership are explored. Several themes emerged from the data relative to leading, learning, teaching, and the appreciative mindset. These themes reflect the instructors' perceptions of their teaching experiences and student learning: (a) a sense of responsibility central to their desire to impact student success; (b) leadership defined as guiding versus influencing: (c) engaging with students in reflection a primary teaching strategy; (d) belief that student self-awareness contributes to empowerment resulting in self-appreciation; (e) opinion that owning the circumstances of their academic probationary status allows students to practice self-leadership. However, one major theme emerged: leading, learning, and teaching are all relational. This study suggests the integration of appreciative advising with instructional leadership may contribute to enhanced learning experiences for students in pedagogical contexts and increase undergraduate student retention

The Chairman of the Re-Open South Carolina Select Committee appointed a subcommittee to evaluate the state’s COVID-19 testing and tracing efforts. Presenters to the subcommittee were asked to submit to the subcommittee specific recommendations for immediate legislative actions or appropriations that would promote 1) increased COVID-19 testing and/or 2) quicker lab analysis of specimens and reporting of results to those tested. Based on the testimony at the meetings and the recommendations submitted, this report of recommendations requiring legislative action or appropriations as well as those which are directed to the appropriate agencies is made to the President

The combination of crop diversification and no tillage enhances key soil quality parameters related to soil functioning without compromising crop yields in a low-input rainfed almond orchard under semiarid Mediterranean conditions

Soils provide key ecosystem services and are crucial to combat climate change. Agriculture provides important ecosystem services but also causes negative environmental effects depending on agricultural management. In this regard, crop diversification is a promising sustainable land management strategy to combat soil erosion and degradation, mitigate climate change and ensure food security. Here, we assess the combined short-term effects of crop diversification and no tillage on several key soil physico-chemical parameters related to soil functioning as well as on crop yields in a rainfed almond (Prunus dulcis Mill.) orchard under semiarid Mediterranean conditions. Almond trees were inter-cropped with Capparis spinosa L. (caper) or Thymus hyemalis Lange (winter thyme) and compared with the almond monocrop system. The experimental design consisted of three plots in a randomized-block design, with three replicates for each crop management treatment (almond monocrop, almond inter-cropped with caper, and almond inter-cropped with winter thyme). Along with crop yields, the combined effects of crop diversification and no tillage on a range of soil quality and health indicators including soil physical (bulk density, aggregate stability, water retention and availability) and chemical (total and particulate organic carbon and nitrogen, ammonium and nitrate content, available macro- and micro-nutrients) properties were monitored in the topsoil and subsoil (at 0–10 and 10–30 cm depth, respectively) one and three years from establishment.EEA Delta del ParanáFil: Almagro, María. Attempts at memory control induce dysfunctional brain activation profiles in Generalized Anxiety Disorder: An exploratory fMRI study

    Get PDF
Suppression of aversive memories through memory control has historically been proposed as a central psychological defense mechanism. Inability to suppress memories is considered a central psychological trait in several psychiatric disorders, including Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD). Yet, few studies have attempted the focused identification of dysfunctional brain activation profiles when patients with Generalized Anxiety Disorders attempt memory control. Using a well-characterized behavioral paradigm we studied brain activation profiles in a group of adult GAD patients and well-matched healthy controls (HC). Participants learned word-association pairs before imaging. During fMRI when presented with one word of the pair, they were instructed to either suppress memory of, or retrieve the paired word. Subsequent behavioral testing indicated both GAD and HC were able to engage in the task, but attempts at memory control (suppression or retrieval) during fMRI revealed vastly different activation profiles. GAD were characterized by substantive hypo-activation signatures during both types of memory control, with effects particularly strong during suppression in brain regions including the dorsal anterior cingulate and the ventral prefrontal cortex. Attempts at memory control in GAD fail to engage brain regions to the same extent HC, providing a putative neuronal signature for a well-established psychological characteristic of the illness
