A domain-specific design architecture for composite material design and aircraft part redesign
Advanced composites have been targeted as a 'leapfrog' technology that would provide a unique global competitive position for U.S. industry. Composites are unique in the requirements for an integrated approach to designing, manufacturing, and marketing of products developed utilizing the new materials of construction. Numerous studies extending across the entire economic spectrum of the United States from aerospace to military to durable goods have identified composites as a 'key' technology. In general there have been two approaches to composite construction: build models of a given composite materials, then determine characteristics of the material via numerical simulation and empirical testing; and experience-directed construction of fabrication plans for building composites with given properties. The first route sets a goal to capture basic understanding of a device (the composite) by use of a rigorous mathematical model; the second attempts to capture the expertise about the process of fabricating a composite (to date) at a surface level typically expressed in a rule based system. From an AI perspective, these two research lines are attacking distinctly different problems, and both tracks have current limitations. The mathematical modeling approach has yielded a wealth of data but a large number of simplifying assumptions are needed to make numerical simulation tractable. Likewise, although surface level expertise about how to build a particular composite may yield important results, recent trends in the KBS area are towards augmenting surface level problem solving with deeper level knowledge. Many of the relative advantages of composites, e.g., the strength:weight ratio, is most prominent when the entire component is designed as a unitary piece. The bottleneck in undertaking such unitary design lies in the difficulty of the re-design task. The new model of fitting the spectral energy distributions of Mkn 421 and Mkn 501
The spectral energy distribution (SED) of TeV blazars has a double-humped
shape that is usually interpreted as Synchrotron Self Compton (SSC) model. The
one zone SSC model is used broadly but cannot fit the high energy tail of SED
very well. It need bulk Lorentz factor which is conflict with the observation.
Furthermore one zone SSC model can not explain the entire spectrum. In the
paper, we propose a new model that the high energy emission is produced by the
accelerated protons in the blob with a small size and high magnetic field, the
low energy radiation comes from the electrons in the expanded blob. Because the
high and low energy photons are not produced at the same time, the requirement
of large Doppler factor from pair production is relaxed. We present the fitting
results of the SEDs for Mkn 501 during April 1997 and Mkn 421 during March 2001

Neutrino production through hadronic cascades in AGN accretion disks
We consider the production of neutrinos in active galactic nuclei (AGN)
through hadronic cascades. The initial, high energy nucleons are accelerated in
a source above the accretion disk around the central black hole. From the
source, the particles diffuse back to the disk and initiate hadronic cascades.
The observable output from the cascade are electromagnetic radiation and
neutrinos. We use the observed diffuse background X-ray luminosity, which
presumably results {}from this process, to predict the diffuse neutrino flux
close to existing limits from the Frejus experiment. The resulting neutrino
spectrum is down to the \GeV region. We discuss modifications of

Between overt and covert research: concealment and disclosure in an ethnographic study of commercial hospitality
This article examines the ways in which problems of concealment emerged in an ethnographic study of a suburban bar and considers how disclosure of the research aims, the recruitment of informants, and elicitation of information was negotiated throughout the fieldwork. The case study demonstrates how the social context and the relationships with specific informants determined overtness or covertness in the research. It is argued that the existing literature on covert research and covert methods provides an inappropriate frame of reference with which to understand concealment in fieldwork. The article illustrates why concealment is sometimes necessary, and often unavoidable, and concludes that the criticisms leveled against covert methods should not stop the fieldworker from engaging in research that involves covertness
Plasma Wakefield Acceleration for Ultrahigh Energy Cosmic Rays
A cosmic acceleration mechanism is introduced which is based on the
wakefields excited by the Alfven shocks in a relativistically flowing plasma,
where the energy gain per distance of a test particle is Lorentz invariant. We
show that there exists a threshold condition for transparency below which the
accelerating particle is collision-free and suffers little energy loss in the
plasma medium. The stochastic encounters of the random
accelerating-decelerating phases results in a power-law energy spectrum: f(e)
1/e^2. The environment suitable for such plasma wakefield acceleration can be
cosmically abundant. As an example, we discuss the possible production of
super-GZK ultra high energy cosmic rays (UHECR) through this mechanism in the
atmosphere of gamma ray bursts. We show that the acceleration gradient can be
as high as G ~ 10^16 eV/cm. The estimated event rate in our model agrees with

Status and Plans for the Array Control and Data Acquisition System of the Cherenkov Telescope Array
The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) is the next-generation atmospheric
Cherenkov gamma-ray observatory. CTA will consist of two installations, one in
the northern, and the other in the southern hemisphere, containing tens of
telescopes of different sizes. The CTA performance requirements and the
inherent complexity associated with the operation, control and monitoring of
such a large distributed multi-telescope array leads to new challenges in the
field of the gamma-ray astronomy. The ACTL (array control and data acquisition)
system will consist of the hardware and software that is necessary to control
and monitor the CTA arrays, as well as to time-stamp, read-out, filter and
store -at aggregated rates of few GB/s- the scientific data. The ACTL system
must be flexible enough to permit the simultaneous automatic operation of
multiple sub-arrays of telescopes with a minimum personnel effort on site. One
of the challenges of the system is to provide a reliable integration of the
control of a large and heterogeneous set of devices. Moreover, the system is
required to be ready to adapt the observation schedule, on timescales of a few
tens of seconds, to account for changing environmental conditions or to
prioritize incoming scientific alerts from time-critical transient phenomena
such as gamma ray bursts. This contribution provides a summary of the main

Supporting reasonable adjustments for learners with disabilities in physical education: An investigation into teacherâs perceptions of one online tool
This study sets out to investigate physical education (PE) teachersâ perceptions of the use of an online professional development resource to support making reasonable adjustment for learners with disability. The Equality Act (2010) called on all UK schools to ensure access to PE was equitable for all learners. This means schools have to adopt strategies for making reasonable adjustments so as not to disadvantage learners with any special educational need and disability. Teachers report that they are working towards an inclusive classroom; however, parents of learners with disabilities report that there remains a lack of opportunities for their children to engage with activity.
Using purposive sampling, participants were selected for the study after which they were asked to complete a continuing professional development online training course on the subject of making reasonable adjustments for learning with disabilities. Through one-to-one interviews, qualitative data were collected and analysed through thematic analysis. The findings indicated that the online resource was greeted positively by staff and not only supported the PE teachers but also increased their awareness of different approaches to making reasonable adjustments. The findings also indicated that the issue of making reasonable adjustments and the use of the online development tool need to be driven from the school senior leadership team if it is to have value for the whole school community
The CAT Imaging Telescope for Very-High-Energy Gamma-Ray Astronomy
The CAT (Cherenkov Array at Themis) imaging telescope, equipped with a
very-high-definition camera (546 fast phototubes with 0.12 degrees spacing
surrounded by 54 larger tubes in two guard rings) started operation in Autumn
1996 on the site of the former solar plant Themis (France). Using the
atmospheric Cherenkov technique, it detects and identifies very high energy
gamma-rays in the range 250 GeV to a few tens of TeV. The instrument, which has
detected three sources (Crab nebula, Mrk 421 and Mrk 501), is described in

Adult Social Work and High Risk Domestic Violence Cases
Summary
This article focuses on adult social workâs response in England to high-risk domestic violence cases and the role of adult social workers in Multi-Agency Risk and Assessment Conferences. (MARACs). The research was undertaken between 2013-2014 and
focused on one city in England and involved the research team attending MARACs, Interviews with 20 adult social workers, 24 MARAC attendees, 14 adult service users at time T1 (including follow up interviews after six months, T2), focus groups with IDVAs and Womenâs Aid and an interview with a Womenâs Aid service user.
Findings
The findings suggest that although adult social workers accept the need to be involved in domestic violence cases they are uncertain of what their role is and are confused with the need to operate a parallel domestic violence and adult safeguarding approach, which is further, complicated by issues of mental capacity. MARACS are identified as overburdened, under-represented meetings staffed by committed managers. However, they are in danger of becoming managerial processes neglecting the service users they are meant to protect.
Applications
The article argues for a re-engagement of adult social workers with domestic violence that has increasingly become over identified with child protection. It also raises the issue whether MARACS remain fit for purpose and whether they still represent the best possible response to multi-agency coordination and practice in domestic violence
Which blazars are neutrino loud?
Protons accelerated in the cores of active galactic nuclei can effectively
produce neutrinos only if the soft radiation background in the core is
sufficiently high. We find restrictions on the spectral properties and
luminosity of blazars under which they can be strong neutrino sources. We
analyze the possibility that neutrino flux is highly beamed along the rotation
axis of the central black hole. The enhancement of neutrino flux compared to
GeV gamma-ray flux from a given source makes the detection of neutrino point
sources more probable. At the same time the smaller open angle reduces the
number of possible neutrino-loud blazars compared to the number of gamma-ray
loud ones. We present the table of 15 blazars which are the most likely
