The concept of exponential function in the context of Vergnaud Theory

    Get PDF
In order to teach exponential functions as well as to study the process of conceptualization through Vergnaud Theory of Conceptual Fields, a didactic sequence was designed. The sequence was tested with four groups of students [between 15-16 years old] of a secondary school. The analysis suggested the existence of an escalation in the conceptualization of the exponential function linked to representational systems, ranging from linear schemes, to exponential. However, this escalation did not occur in all representational systems at the very same time.Fil: Otero, Maria Rita. Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas. Predictors of Prevention Failure in College Students Participating in Two Indicated Depression Prevention Programs

    Get PDF
The purpose of this study was to identify subgroups of university students with the highest likelihood of remaining at elevated levels of depressive symptoms six months following the receipt of a depressive prevention intervention on the basis of known risk factors and participation in one of two depression prevention programs. Data from a randomized controlled trial evaluating depression prevention among 133 college students with elevated depressive symptoms were analyzed. Participants were randomized to a cognitive-behavioral or relaxation training group preventive intervention. Classification tree analysis showed that older age was the strongest risk factor for persistently elevated depression. Additional risk factors were: (1) for younger students, fewer daily pleasant activities; (2) for those with higher level of pleasant activities, higher level of stressful events; and (3) for those with higher level of stressful events, lower assertiveness. Results offer directions for prevention foci, identify specific subgroups of college students to target for depression prevention efforts, and suggest that research aim to help older, non-traditional students or graduating students manage the transition from college to the work forceThese studies were supported by grant PGIDT05PXIA21101PR from the Directorate General for Research and Development (Counsellery of Innovation, Industry and Trade) of the Xunta de Galicia (Spain)S

    From Powers to Exponential Function

    Get PDF
The construction of the exponential function of a real exponent from the definition of the powers of a real number, and its properties, requires the notion of successions, a decimal approximation of a rational number, convergence, and limit of a function. In Argentina, this construction would exceed what could be taught at the secondary level, but it provides advanced students of teachers in mathematics, and teachers in practice, the possibility of discussing what happens in the case of irrational exponents of the type aπ, or discuss the validity of the properties of this type of power.Fil: Sureda Figueroa, Diana Patricia. STUDY AND RESEARCH IN TEACHING MATHEMATICS IN TWO HIGH SCHOOLS

    Get PDF
This work describes and analyzes the dialectic study and research, during implementation of Study and Research Path (SRP), in two high school courses. We analyzed   over more than eight hundred protocols that generated the responses of (N = 75) students. The inquiry started with the question: “Which is the best savings plan to generate the greatest amount of income with a bank deposit that pays interest?” for which the students did not have an immediate response. That is to say, they did not know with what mathematical knowledge, or extra-mathematical, they could approach it. The analysis shows that implementing this type of teaching in an institution with previous experience in this paradigm works better than in one that lacks of prior experience.  Article visualizations

Partidos políticos versus presidentes. Uma análise da congruência ideológica na América Latina

    Get PDF
This study aims the political congruence in Latin American presidentialist democracies. It analyzes the levels of ideological congruence between parties and presidential candidates with their voters. The data used come from Americas Barometer at Vanderbilt University and Latin American Elites Project at the University of Salamanca for 11 Latin American countries between 2004 and 2014. The results conclude that the ideological links in Latin America are varied. Voters tend to be more congruent with the political parties they vote for in the legislative than with the candidates they vote for president, reinforcing the idea of dual legitimacy and dual representation in these countries. The radicalism, and the number, of parties and candidates appears as the most significant variables to explain ideological congruence. Building Cultural Heritage Reference Collections from Social Media through Pooling Strategies: The Case of 2020’s Tensions Over Race and Heritage

Preprint del artículo[Abstract] Social networks constitute a valuable source for documenting heritage constitution processes or obtaining a real-time snapshot of a cultural heritage research topic. Many heritage researchers use social networks as a social thermometer to study these processes, creating, for this purpose, collections that constitute born-digital archives potentially reusable, searchable, and of interest to other researchers or citizens. However, retrieval and archiving techniques used in social networks within heritage studies are still semi-manual, being a time-consuming task and hindering the reproducibility, evaluation, and open-up of the collections created. By combining Information Retrieval strategies with emerging archival techniques, some of these weaknesses can be left behind. Specifically, pooling is a well-known Information Retrieval method to extract a sample of documents from an entire document set (posts in case of social network's information), obtaining the most complete and unbiased set of relevant documents on a given topic. Using this approach, researchers could create a reference collection while avoiding annotating the entire corpus of documents or posts retrieved. This is especially useful in social media due to the large number of topics treated by the same user or in the same thread or post. We present a platform for applying pooling strategies combined with expert judgment to create cultural heritage reference collections from social networks in a customisable, reproducible, documented, and shareable way. The platform is validated by building a reference collection from a social network about the recent attacks on patrimonial entities motivated by anti-racist protests. This reference collection and the results obtained from its preliminary study are available for use. This real application has allowed us to validate the platform and the pooling strategies for creating reference collections in heritage studies from social networks. This research has received financial support from: (i) Saving European Archaeology from the Digital Dark Age (SEADDA) 2019-2023 COST ACTION CA 18128; (ii) “Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovación y Universidades” of the Government of Spain and the ERDF (projects RTI2018-093336-B-C21 and RTI2018-093336-B-C22); (iii) Xunta de Galicia - “Consellería de Cultura, Educación e Universidade” (project GPC ED431B 2019/03); (iv) Xunta de Galicia - “Consellería de Cultura, Educación e Universidade” and the ERDF (“Centro Singular de Investigación de Galicia” accreditation ED431G 2019/01)European Cooperation in Science and Technology; CA18128Xunta de Galicia; ED431B 2019/03Xunta de Galicia; ED431G 2019/0
