A more representative chamber: representation and the House of Lords
Since 1997 there has been substantive reform of the House of Lords in an effort to make the chamber ‘more democratic and more representative’. Whilst the Labour government failed to press ahead with any of the proposed plans for further reform following the removal of the bulk of the hereditary peers in 1999, it remained committed to the notion that such reform must make the second chamber ‘more representative’. The coalition government's programme advocates a long-term aspiration for a House wholly or mainly elected on the basis of proportional representation, and a short-term approach based on additional appointments to ensure a balance of the parties. What is clear in all of these proposals for reform is a desire for the House of Lords to become more representative than it is at present. However, what is less clear is what is meant by ‘representative’ – who the House of Lords is supposed to represent, and what form representation will take. Moreover, in proposing to make the chamber more representative, either through appointment or election, little attention has been paid to how the current House of Lords provides representation. Yes, one-day international cricket 'in-play' trading strategies can be profitable!
In this study, we employ a Monte Carlo simulation technique for estimating the conditional probability of victory at any stage in the first or second innings of a one-day international (ODI) cricket match. This model is then used to test market efficiency in the Betfair 'in-play' market for large sample of ODI matches. We find strong evidence of overreaction in the first innings. A trading strategy of betting on the batting team after the fall of a wicket produces a significant profit of 20%. We also find some evidence of underreaction in the second innings although it is less economically and statistically significant than the first innings overreaction. We also implement trades when the discrepancy between the probability of victory implied by current market odds differs substantially from the odds estimated by our Monte Carlo simulation model. We document a number of trading strategies that yield large statistically significant positive returns in both the first and second innings

VeSPA: The SuperWASP Variable Star Photometry Archive
SuperWASP Variable Stars is a Zooniverse citizen science project in which the public label photometric light curve plots showing potential variations in stellar brightness. The volunteers label each plot as one of several types of variable star, or as “unknown” or “junk”. Their labels are combined to produce an aggregated classification. We are publishing the first data release from the project via an interactive website called VeSPA. The results can be searched, filtered, and exported in CSV format. A SuperWASP Light Curve Displaying a Single Long-duration Transit: A Jupiter Size Exoplanet in a Very Distant Orbit?
We present the SuperWASP light curve of a 10th magnitude A7V star containing a single, well-defined U-shaped transit-like event lasting around 11 days with a depth of 1.1%. The star is otherwise non-variable throughout the 8 yr duration of the observations. If the event is modeled as an exoplanet transit, it is compatible with a 1.8 RJ exoplanet in a ∼205 au orbit with a period of ∼2200 yr
The impact of the mixing properties within the Antarctic stratospheric vortex on ozone loss in spring
Calculations of equivalent length from an artificial advected tracer provide new insight into the isentropic transport processes occurring within the Antarctic stratospheric vortex. These calculations show two distinct regions of approximately equal area: a strongly mixed vortex core and a broad ring of weakly mixed air extending out to the vortex boundary. This broad ring of vortex air remains isolated from the core between late winter and midspring. Satellite measurements of stratospheric H2O confirm that the isolation lasts until at least mid-October. A three-dimensional chemical transport model simulation of the Antarctic ozone hole quantifies the ozone loss within this ring and demonstrates its isolation. In contrast to the vortex core, ozone loss in the weakly mixed broad ring is not complete. The reasons are twofold. First, warmer temperatures in the broad ring prevent continuous polar stratospheric cloud (PSC) formation and the associated chemical processing (i.e., the conversion of unreactive chlorine into reactive forms). Second, the isolation prevents ozone-rich air from the broad ring mixing with chemically processed air from the vortex core. If the stratosphere continues to cool, this will lead to increased PSC formation and more complete chemical processing in the broad ring. Despite the expected decline in halocarbons, sensitivity studies suggest that this mechanism will lead to enhanced ozone loss in the weakly mixed region, delaying the future recovery of the ozone hole
SuperWASP Variable Stars: Classifying Light Curves Using Citizen Science
We present the first analysis of results from the SuperWASP Variable Stars Zooniverse project, which is aiming to classify 1.6 million phase-folded light curves of candidate stellar variables observed by the SuperWASP all sky survey with periods detected in the SuperWASP periodicity catalogue. The resultant data set currently contains >1 million classifications corresponding to >500,000 object-period combinations, provided by citizen-scientist volunteers. Volunteer-classified light curves have ∼89 per cent accuracy for detached and semi-detached eclipsing binaries, but only ∼9 per cent accuracy for rotationally modulated variables, based on known objects. We demonstrate that this Zooniverse project will be valuable for both population studies of individual variable types and the identification of stellar variables for follow up. We present preliminary findings on various unique and extreme variables in this analysis, including long period contact binaries and binaries near the short-period cutoff, and we identify 301 previously unknown binaries and pulsators. We are now in the process of developing a web portal to enable other researchers to access the outputs of the SuperWASP Variable Stars project

The classical theory of symmetric functions has a central position in
algebraic combinatorics, bridging aspects of representation theory,
combinatorics, and enumerative geometry. More recently, this theory has been
fruitfully extended to the larger ring of quasisymmetric functions, with
corresponding applications. Here, we survey recent work extending this theory

The Action of Bax and Bcl-2 on T Cell Selection
T cell development and selection in the thymus are shaped by the induction of apoptosis. However, a direct role in T cell development and selection for any of the molecules known to regulate apoptosis has remained controversial. We have studied the effect of bax and bcl-2 transgenes in recombination activation gene 1–deficient (RAG-1−/−) mice transgenic for the major histocompatibility complex class I–restricted F5 T cell receptor. Overexpression of a bax transgene in the thymus seriously impairs the production of mature T cells, whereas bcl-2 overexpression greatly promotes it. The effect of bax and bcl-2 overexpression on antigen-induced negative selection was studied using fetal thymic organ cultures. This analysis showed that Bcl-2 strongly inhibits negative selection, whereas Bax does not affect it. Our data directly show that Bcl-2 family members have specific roles in T cell selection and also lend support to the hypothesis that Bax and Bcl-2 can antagonize each other's action in a certain apoptosis pathway while in another they can be functionally nonreciprocal
Bad Can Act as a Key Regulator of T Cell Apoptosis and T Cell Development
Bad is a distant relative of Bcl-2 and acts to promote cell death. Here, we show that Bad expression levels are greatly increased in thymocytes during apoptosis. We generated bad transgenic mice to study the action of upregulated Bad expression on T cell apoptosis. The T cells from these mice are highly sensitive to apoptotic stimuli, including anti-CD95. The numbers of T cells are greatly depleted and the processes of T cell development and selection are perturbed. We show that the proapoptotic function of Bad in primary T cells is regulated by Akt kinase and that Bad overexpression enhances both cell cycle progression and interleukin 2 production after T cell activation. These data suggest that Bad can act as a key regulator of T cell apoptosis and that this is a consequence of its upregulation after exposure to death stimuli
An aggravated trajectory of depression and anxiety co-morbid with hepatitis C: : A 21 to 62 month follow-up study in 61 South Australian outpatients
BACKGROUND: This study aimed to explore the course of depression and anxiety in chronic hepatitis C patients. METHODS: Data were combined from two studies: (1) Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) scores in 395 consecutive Australian outpatients from 2006 to 2010 formed the baseline measurement; and (2) Depression Anxiety Stress Scales (DASS) scores in a survey of a sub-sample of these patients in 2011 formed the follow-up measurement. After converting DASS to HADS scores, changes in symptom scores and rates of case-ness (≥8), and predictors of follow-up symptoms were assessed. RESULTS: Follow-up data were available for 61 patients (70.5% male) whose age ranged from 24.5 to 74.6 years (M=45.6). The time to follow-up ranged from 20.7 to 61.9 months (M=43.8). Baseline rates of depression (32.8%) and anxiety (44.3%) increased to 62.3% and 67.2%, respectively. These findings were confirmed, independent of the conversion, by comparing baseline HADS and follow-up DASS scores with British community norms. Baseline anxiety and younger age predicted depression, while baseline anxiety, high school non-completion, and single relationship status predicted anxiety. CONCLUSION: This study demonstrated a worsening trajectory of depression and anxiety. Further controlled and prospective research in a larger sample is required to confirm these findings
