Do Discipline Style and Parenting Self-Efficacy Interact to Predict Observed Child Behavior? Outcomes from a Representative Sample of Mothers with Young Chilren

    Get PDF
Both parenting style and parents’ sense of their own parenting self-efficacy (PSE) have been found to predict child behavior outcomes in young children. Parents who engage in lax or overreactive parenting practices or who lack confidence in their parenting abilities are more likely to have children who display disruptive and noncompliant behavior. Until now, very little research has examined whether an interaction exits between these two constructs in predicting child behavior outcomes. The current study looked to fill this gap and assess whether a significant moderation relationship exists between parents’ parenting style and PSE in predicting observed child behavior. A representative sample of (N=268) mother-child dyads was assessed using self-report measures of parenting style and PSE and coded data on observed child behavior from a lab-based interaction task. Results of the initial hierarchical multiple regression analyses revealed no significant moderation or main effects for the predictors of interest in predicting observed child behavior. Subsequent analyses using parent report of child behavior as the criterion, however, revealed a significant moderation effect in which level of PSE was more predictive of child behavior when parents engaged lax parenting than when they were not lax. No significant interaction was found for overreactive parenting. Implications for future research and intervention are discussed

Relationship between perceptual learning in speech and statistical learning in younger and older adults

Within a few sentences, listeners learn to understand severely degraded speech such as noise-vocoded speech. However, individuals vary in the amount of such perceptual learning and it is unclear what underlies these differences. The present study investigates whether perceptual learning in speech relates to statistical learning, as sensitivity to probabilistic information may aid identification of relevant cues in novel speech input. If statistical learning and perceptual learning (partly) draw on the same general mechanisms, then statistical learning in a non-auditory modality using non-linguistic sequences should predict adaptation to degraded speech. In the present study, 73 older adults (aged over 60 years) and 60 younger adults (aged between 18 and 30 years) performed a visual artificial grammar learning task and were presented with sixty meaningful noise-vocoded sentences in an auditory recall task. Within age groups, sentence recognition performance over exposure was analyzed as a function of statistical learning performance, and other variables that may predict learning (i.e., hearing, vocabulary, attention switching control, working memory and processing speed). Younger and older adults showed similar amounts of perceptual learning, but only younger adults showed significant statistical learning. In older adults, improvement in understanding noise-vocoded speech was constrained by age. In younger adults, amount of adaptation was associated with lexical knowledge and with statistical learning ability. Thus, individual differences in general cognitive abilities explain listeners' variability in adapting to noise-vocoded speech. Results suggest that perceptual and statistical learning share mechanisms of implicit regularity detection, but that the ability to detect statistical regularities is impaired in older adults if visual sequences are presented quickly

Adult age effects in auditory statistical learning

Statistical learning plays a key role in language processing, e.g., for speech segmentation. Older adults have been reported to show less statistical learning on the basis of visual input than younger adults. Given age-related changes in perception and cognition, we investigated whether statistical learning is also impaired in the auditory modality in older compared to younger adults and whether individual learning ability is associated with measures of perceptual (i.e., hearing sensitivity) and cognitive functioning in both age groups. Thirty younger and thirty older adults performed an auditory artificial-grammar-learning task to assess their statistical learning ability. In younger adults, perceptual effort came at the cost of processing resources required for learning. Inhibitory control (as indexed by Stroop colornaming performance) did not predict auditory learning. Overall, younger and older adults showed the same amount of auditory learning, indicating that statistical learning ability is preserved over the adult life span

The shrubs or small trees of the common European elder are rampant all over Europe, especially in ruderal areas. In naturopathy, preparations of Elder are effectively used for treatment of flu, cough, sneeze, laryngitis, nephritic diseases or cystitis without referring all effects to special constituents of the plant. As elderberry juice is rich in antioxidant compounds, the aim of this work was to identify and quantify some of these secondary plant compounds in the berry juice with main focus on phenolic acids and flavonoids. The given task was to accomplish the analysis using HPLC coupled with the Coulometric Electrode Array Detection system (CEAD). Levels of protocatechuic acid, chlorogenic acid, rutin, and avicularin had been earlier determined by Nagl et al. (2002) using SPE for sample preparation and HPLC-UV. These sample preparation and analytical methods were improved and modified to meet the premises of RP-HPLC coupled with CEAD for qualitative and quantitative analysis. Two isocratic methods were developed to separate phenolic acids (mobile phase 2% methanol, 98% 20 mM sodium acetate buffer adjusted to pH 2.90 with acetic acid (v/v), flow 0.8 ml/min) and flavonoid glycosides and aglycons (mobile phase 50% methanol, 50% 20 mM potassium dihydrogenphosphate buffer adjusted to pH 3.50 with phospho-ric acid (v/v), flow 1.2 ml/min) on a M&N EC 150 x 4.6 mm Nucleodur Sphinx column. Sample work-up for determination of phenolic acids included SPE. For analysis of fla-vonoids simple dilution and centrifugation steps were sufficient. CEAD (potentials +50 to +820 mV) allowed selective detection of oxidizable constituents and isocratic elution kept running times short and prevented tailing in aglycon peaks. Protocatechuic acid, chlorogenic acid, rutin, nicotiflorin and quercetin could be identified by comparison of retention times and current voltage curves. LC-ESI/MS was used as additional identifi-cation tool. Quantification was carried out by standard addition method based on HPLC-CEAD data
