Optimization of micropropagation and establishment of cell suspension culture in Melissa officinalis L.
Melissa officinalis L., due to its useful application in medicine, is being paid more attention. In order to establish a stable regeneration system with 4 landraces collected from different climate in Iran, major parameters such as regeneration rate, rooting percentage, shooting induction, proliferation rate, fresh and dry weight as a biomass of cells were investigated. Statistical analysis of results showed that BAP in combination with NAA had the highest regeneration in shoot tips explants. NAA in combination with IAA and kinetin had the best response to callus induction. Also 1 mgl/l NAA had a higher response to rooting than other auxins used. 2,4-D at 1.0 mg/l and BAP at 0.5 mg/l showed the highest production of fresh and dry weight, 5.48 and 0.407 g, respectively, that is approximately 20 times the initial weight of callus. 2,4-D (1 mg/l) and BAP (0.5 mg/l) had the highest cells number
Formulation and physicochemical evaluation of toothpaste formulated with Thymus vulgaris essential oil
Introduction: Streptococcus mutans is the most common cause of tooth decay. Parabens, and other commonly used as anti-Streptococcus agents in toothpaste industry have numerous side effects such as discoloration of teeth. Thymus vulgaris essential oil has profound antimicrobial activity against a wide range of species. The aim of present study was the aim of the present study was to formulate and evaluate the physicochemical properties of a kind of toothpaste formulated with Thymus vulgaris essential oil. Thyme oil components were also analyzed using gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC-MS).Methods: Toothpaste was formulated in forms of gel and opaque and Thyme essence was added to it. The formulation was evaluated in terms of stability in different temperatures, pH, consistency, uniformity, taste, smell, and compatibility with special packaging for toothpaste at three temperatures. Profilometry was used to determine abrasivity. The rate of contaminations with lead and arsenic was determined by atomic absorption. The amount of fluoride was measured by potentiometry. Results: Forty-one different components, representing 99.64 of the total oil were identified in essential oil. Addition of thyme essence to formulation had no deleterious effect in stability, consistency, taste and smell. The pH of opaque and gel formulations was 7.02 and 7.45, respectively. The abrasiveness of opaque and gel formulations was in standard ranges. The fluoride content was 1000 ppm. Lead and arsenic were not detected at all. Conclusion: Formulation of toothpaste with T. vulgaris essential oil was acceptable and might be considered as a desirable herbal toothpaste
A comparison of public school and private institute EFL teachers' burnout
Background and Objective:Job stress is one of the most important reasons that reduces the efficiency and quality of education. Job stress can also be the result of various factors such as lack of required resources, volatile job position, etc., which subsequently and gradually cause short-term or long-term negative consequences with physiological characteristics. Burnout is also a consequence of job stress, which first appeared in the United States in the 1970s and then gradually in many other countries and different occupations. This study aimed to examine factors that may influence burnout among English as a foreign language (EFL) teachers of public schools and private language institutes in Iran. Methods: To address this objective, both quantitative and qualitative data collection and analysis procedures were applied. Quantitative data were collected from 180 teachers from both public schools and private institutes through Maslach Burnout Inventory. Also, qualitative data were gleaned through conducting individual, semi-structured interviews with 10 of the participants (5 teachers from public schools and 5 instructors from private institutes). Findings: The results of independent samples t-test showed that private institute teachers were in a significantly worse condition in terms of burnout in comparison with their public school counterparts. On the other hand, the results of analyzing the content of the interviews revealed that economic conditions, job security, social status, lack of motivation, and lack of serenity were the main factors contributing to burnout among EFL instructors in private institutes, while lack of motivation and variety in the education process were the only factors causing burnout among teachers in public schools. Conclusion:The results showed that environmental factors such as demand and job resources are very effective in reducing or increasing job burnout. Given the positive factors affecting the reduction of burnout in public schools, policy makers in language schools will also be able to design and implement remedial programs to reduce burnout in private school teachers. As a result, the difference between the two learning environments is greatly reduced and the quality of teaching is increased to an acceptable level. In addition, the results showed that teachers who are more successful in their emotional interactions and relationships with others in the workplace are more likely to manage their work stress. Staff at the Ministry of Education, while emphasizing the factors that reduce the risk of job burnout, should also try to address the few factors that cause this problem among English teachers in schools.  ===================================================================================== COPYRIGHTS ©2019 The author(s). Determining the best drought tolerance indices using Artificial Neural Network (ANN): Insight into application of intelligent agriculture in agronomy and plant breeding
In the present study, efficiency of the artificial neural network (ANN) method to identify the best drought tolerance indices was investigated. For this purpose, 25 durum genotypes were evaluated under rainfed and supplemental irrigation environments during two consecutive cropping seasons (2011â2013). The results of combined analysis of variance (ANOVA) revealed that year, environment, genotype and their interaction effects were significant for grain yield. Mean grain yield of the genotypes ranged from 184.93 g plotâ1 under rainfed environment to 659.32 g plotâ1 under irrigated environment. Based on the ANN results, yield stability index (YSI), harmonic mean (HM) and stress susceptible index (SSI) were identified as the best indices to predict drought-tolerant genotypes. However, mean productivity (MP) followed by geometric mean productivity (GMP) and HM were found to be accurate indices for screening drought tolerant genotypes. In general, our results indicated that genotypes G9, G12, G21, G23 and G24 were identified as more desirable genotypes for cultivation in drought-prone environments. Importantly, these results could provide an evidence that ANN method can play an important role in the selection of drought tolerant genotypes and also could be useful in other biological contexts
Cancer risk among patients with multiple sclerosis: A cohort study in Isfahan, Iran
Background: Multiple sclerosis (MS), a central nervous system (CNS) autoimmune disorder, affects 2.3 million people around the world. Cancer kills around 7.5 million people annually. Both diseases have similar risks and intertwining molecular causes. Most studies focusing on MS and cancer have found an insignificant difference or reduction in the amount of cancer found in the MS community. Methods: We performed a cohort study using data from Isfahan Multiple Sclerosis Society (IMSS) and Isfahan cancer society and followed-up for 8 years on average (2006-2014). All of the 1718 MS patients were diagnosed according to McDonald's criteria, then standardized incidence ratio and the numbers of expected cancer case were calculated. Results: While patients had an insignificant change in cancer prevalence, men had fewer cancer cases and women showed an increased prevalence of cancer. Certain types of cancer proved statistically significant. Breast cancer, nervous system cancers, and lymphoma were elevated in the cohort. Conclusion: Our results support the hypothesis that MS significantly affects certain cancers in a protective or associative manner. All cancer rates, except breast cancer, cancers located in the nervous system, and lymphomas were reduced in cohort, suggesting that unregulated immune function may provide protective effects to MS patients against cancer
Molecular characterization of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency in Jeddah, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia
International audienceABSTRACT: BACKGROUND: The development of polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based methods for the detection of known mutations has facilitated detecting specific red blood cell (RBC) enzyme deficiencies. We carried out a study on glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficient subjects in Jeddah to evaluate the molecular characteristics of this enzyme deficiency and the frequency of nucleotide1311 and IVS-XI-93 polymorphisms in the glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase gene. RESULTS: A total of 1584 unrelated Saudis (984 neonates and 600 adults) were screened for glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency. The prevalence of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency was 6.9% (n=110). G6PD Mediterranean mutation was observed in 98 (89.1%) cases, G6PD Aures in 11 (10.0%) cases, and G6PD Chatham in 1 (0.9%) case. None of the samples showed G6PD A mutation. Samples from 29 deficient subjects (25 males and 4 females) were examined for polymorphism. The association of two polymorphisms of exon/intron 11 (c.1311T/IVS XI 93C) was observed in 14 (42.4%) of 33 chromosomes studied. This association was found in 9 (31.0%) carriers of G6PD Mediterranean and in 4 (13.8%) carriers of G6PD Aures. CONCLUSIONS: The majority of mutations were G6PD Mediterranean, followed by G6PD Aures and <1% G6PD Chatham. We conclude that 1311T is a frequent polymorphism in subjects with G6PD Mediterranean and Aures variants in Jeddah
Three year results of blessed: Expanded access for DeltaRex-G for an intermediate size population with advanced pancreatic cancer and sarcoma (NCT04091295) and individual patient use of DeltaRex-G for solid malignancies (IND# 19130)
Background: Innovative treatments are urgently needed for metastatic cancer. DeltaRex-G, a tumor-targeted retrovector encoding a dominant-negative/cytocidal cyclin G1 (CCNG1 gene) inhibitor constructâhas been tested in over 280 cancer patients worldwide in phase 1, phase 2 studies and compassionate use studies, demonstrating long term (>10Â years) survivorship in patients with advanced cancers, including pancreatic cancer, osteosarcoma, malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor, breast cancer, and B-cell lymphoma.Patient and Methods: Endpoints: Survival, response, treatment-related adverse events. Study one is entitled âBlessed: Expanded Access for DeltaRex-G for Advanced Pancreatic Cancer and Sarcoma (NCT04091295)â. Study two is entitled âIndividual Patient Use of DeltaRex-G for Solid Malignancies (Investigational New Drug#19130). In both studies, patients will receive DeltaRex-G at 1-3 x 10e11Â cfu i.v. over 30â45Â min, three x a week until significant disease progression or unacceptable toxicity or death occurs. Results: Seventeen patients were enrolled, nine sarcoma, two pancreatic adenocarcinoma, one non-small cell lung cancer, two breast carcinoma, one prostate cancer, one cholangiocarcinoma and one basal cell carcinoma and actinic keratosis. Three patients were enrolled in Study 1 and 14 patients were enrolled in Study 2. Twelve of 17 enrolled patients were treated with DeltaRex-G monotherapy or in combination with United States Food and Drug Administration-approved cancer therapies. Five patients died before receiving DeltaRex-G. Efficacy Analysis: Of the 12 treated patients, 5 (42%) are alive 15â36Â months from DeltaRex-G treatment initiation. Two patients with early-stage HR + HER2+ positive or triple receptor negative invasive breast cancer who received DeltaRex-G as adjuvant/first line therapy are alive in complete remission 23 and 16Â months after DeltaRex-G treatment initiation respectively; three patients with metastatic chordoma, chondrosarcoma and advanced basal cell carcinoma are alive 36, 31, and 15Â months after DeltaRex-G treatment initiation respectively. Safety Analysis: There were no treatment-related adverse events reported. Conclusion: Taken together, the data suggest that 1) DeltaRex-G may evoke tumor growth stabilization after failing standard chemotherapy, 2) DeltaRex-G may act synergistically with standard chemotherapy/targeted therapies, and 3) Adjuvant/first line therapy with DeltaRex-G for early-stage invasive carcinoma of breast may be authorized by the USFDA when patients refuse to receive toxic chemotherapy
Co-designing inflammatory bowel disease (Ibd) services in Scotland : findings from a nationwide survey
Background: The Scottish Governmentâs ambition is to ensure that health services are co-designed with the
communities they serve. Crohnâs and Colitis UK and the Scottish Government acknowledged the need to review
and update the current IBD care model. An online survey was conducted asking IBD patients about their
experiences of the NHS care they receive. This survey was the first step of co-designing and developing a national
strategy for IBD service improvement in Scotland.
Aim: To explore IBD patientsâ experiences of current services and make recommendations for future service
development.
Methods: This study was part of a wider cross-sectional on-line survey. Participants were patients with IBD across
Scotland. 777 people with IBD took part in the survey. Thematic analysis of all data was conducted independently
by two researchers.
Results: Three key themes emerged:
Quality of life: Participants highlighted the impact the disease has on quality of life and the desperate need for IBD
services to address this more holistically.
IBD clinicians and access: Participants recognised the need for more IBD nurses and gastroenterologists along with
better access to them. Those with a named IBD nurse reported to be more satisfied with their care.
An explicit IBD care pathway: Patients with IBD identified the need of making the IBD care pathway more explicit to
service users.
Conclusions: Participants expressed the need for a more holistic approach to their IBD care. This includes
integrating psychological, counselling and dietetic services into IBD care with better access to IBD clinicians and a
more explicit IBD care pathway.

Systematic documentation and analysis of human genetic variation in hemoglobinopathies using the microattribution approach
We developed a series of interrelated locus-specific databases to store all published and unpublished genetic variation related to hemoglobinopathies and thalassemia and implemented microattribution to encourage submission of unpublished observations of genetic variation to these public repositories. A total of 1,941 unique genetic variants in 37 genes, encoding globins and other erythroid proteins, are currently documented in these databases, with reciprocal attribution of microcitations to data contributors. Our project provides the first example of implementing microattribution to incentivise submission of all known genetic variation in a defined system. It has demonstrably increased the reporting of human variants, leading to a comprehensive online resource for systematically describing human genetic variation in the globin genes and other genes contributing to hemoglobinopathies and thalassemias. The principles established here will serve as a model for other systems and for the analysis of other common and/or complex human genetic diseases
