A Laser-Plasma Ion Beam Booster Based on Hollow-Channel Magnetic Vortex Acceleration
Laser-driven ion acceleration can provide ultra-short, high-charge,
low-emittance beams. Although undergoing extensive research, demonstrated
maximum energies for laser-ion sources are non-relativistic, complicating
injection into high- accelerator elements and stopping short of
desirable energies for pivotal applications, such as proton tumor therapy. In
this work, we decouple the efforts towards relativistic beam energies from a
single laser-plasma source via a proof-of-principle concept, boosting the beam
into this regime through only a few plasma stages. We employ full 3D
particle-in-cell simulations to demonstrate the capability for capture of
high-charge beams as produced by laser-driven sources, where both source and

Body temperature, activity patterns and hunting in free-living cheetah : biologging reveals new insights
As one of the few felids that is predominantly diurnal, cheetahs (Acinonyx jubatus) can be exposed to high heat loads in their natural habitat. Little is known about long‐term patterns of body temperature and activity (including hunting) in cheetahs because long‐term concurrent measurements of body temperature and activity have never been reported for cheetahs, or, indeed, for any free‐living felid. We report here body temperature and locomotor activity measured with implanted data loggers over 7 months in 5 free‐living cheetahs in Namibia. Air temperature ranged from a maximum of 39 °C in summer to −2 °C in winter. Cheetahs had higher (∼0.4 °C) maximum 24‐h body temperatures, later acrophase (∼1 h), with larger fluctuations in the range of the 24‐h body temperature rhythm (approximately 0.4 °C) during a hot‐dry period than during a cool‐dry period, but maintained homeothermy irrespective of the climatic conditions. As ambient temperatures increased, the cheetahs shifted from a diurnal to a crepuscular activity pattern, with reduced activity between 900 and 1500 hours and increased nocturnal activity. The timing of hunts followed the general pattern of activity; the cheetahs hunted when they were on the move. Cheetahs hunted if an opportunity presented itself; on occasion they hunted in the midday heat or in total darkness (new moon). Biologging revealed insights into cheetah biology that are not accessible by traditional observer‐based techniques.Supplementary Material: Table S1 Prey identified after 38 successful hunts.

Measurement of the Electric Form Factor of the Neutron at Q^2=0.5 and 1.0 (GeV/c)^2
The electric form factor of the neutron was determined from measurements of
the \vec{d}(\vec{e},e' n)p reaction for quasielastic kinematics. Polarized
electrons were scattered off a polarized deuterated ammonia target in which the
deuteron polarization was perpendicular to the momentum transfer. The scattered
electrons were detected in a magnetic spectrometer in coincidence with neutrons
in a large solid angle detector. We find G_E^n = 0.0526 +/- 0.0033 (stat) +/-
0.0026 (sys) and 0.0454 +/- 0.0054 +/- 0.0037 at Q^2 = 0.5 and 1.0 (GeV/c)^2,

Measurements of meson production in relativistic heavy-ion collisions at RHIC
We present results for the measurement of meson production via its
charged kaon decay channel in Au+Au collisions at
, 130, and 200 GeV, and in and +Au collisions
at GeV from the STAR experiment at the BNL Relativistic
Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). The midrapidity () meson transverse
momentum () spectra in central Au+Au collisions are found to be well
described by a single exponential distribution. On the other hand, the
spectra from , +Au and peripheral Au+Au collisions show power-law tails
at intermediate and high and are described better by Levy
distributions. The constant yield ratio vs beam species, collision
centrality and colliding energy is in contradiction with expectations from
models having kaon coalescence as the dominant mechanism for production
at RHIC. The yield ratio as a function of is consistent
with a model based on the recombination of thermal quarks up to GeV/, but disagrees at higher transverse momenta. The measured nuclear
modification factor, , for the meson increases above unity at
intermediate , similar to that for pions and protons, while is
suppressed due to the energy loss effect in central Au+Au collisions. Number of
constituent quark scaling of both and for the meson
with respect to other hadrons in Au+Au collisions at =200 GeV
at intermediate is observed. These observations support quark
coalescence as being the dominant mechanism of hadronization in the
intermediate region at RHIC.Comment: 22 pages, 21 figures, 4 table
Enhanced strange baryon production in Au+Au collisions compared to p+p at sqrts = 200 GeV
We report on the observed differences in production rates of strange and
multi-strange baryons in Au+Au collisions at sqrts = 200 GeV compared to pp
interactions at the same energy. The strange baryon yields in Au+Au collisions,
then scaled down by the number of participating nucleons, are enhanced relative
to those measured in pp reactions. The enhancement observed increases with the
strangeness content of the baryon, and increases for all strange baryons with
collision centrality. The enhancement is qualitatively similar to that observed
at lower collision energy sqrts =17.3 GeV. The previous observations are for
the bulk production, while at intermediate pT, 1 < pT< 4 GeV/c, the strange
baryons even exceed binary scaling from pp yields.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures. Printed in PR
