This practice based research study takes a critical memory approach, on the role of documentary production for ethnographic research in post civil war testimonies, and the politics of representation in Central America during the 80’s and today. Researching the memory of those Guatemalans who lived and suffered the impact of the civil war, and how they coped with its repercussions. Examining ‘the subjective act of remembering’ through the case of the Guatemalan artist, filmmaker and activist Ana Lucía Cuevas

Two modes of peri-interaction between an aldehyde group and a carboxylate anion in naphthalaldehydate salts

    Get PDF
Crystal structures of the salts of 1,8-naphthalaldehydic acid (8-formyl-1-naphthoic acid) show one of two types of interaction between the functional groups. In the more commonly observed case, a carboxylate oxygen lies close to the aldehyde carbonyl carbon atom (O⋯C: 2.445–2.630 Å) and makes an n–pi* interaction. However, in two other cases the carboxylate group has rotated so that the aldehyde now directs its hydrogen atom at the face of the carboxylate group and forms a surprisingly short contact with the carbon atom (H⋯C: 2.29 and 2.42 Å). This interaction is likely to be electrostatic in nature

Energy versus information based estimations of dissipation using a pair of magnetic colloidal particles

    Get PDF
Using the framework of stochastic thermodynamics, we present an experimental study of a doublet of magnetic colloidal particles which is manipulated by a time-dependent magnetic field. Due to hydrodynamic interactions, each bead experiences a state-dependent friction, which we characterize using a hydrodynamic model. In this work, we compare two estimates of the dissipation in this system: the first one is energy based since it relies on the measured interaction potential, while the second one is information based since it uses only the information content of the trajectories. While the latter only offers a lower bound of the former, we find it to be simple to implement and of general applicability to more complex systems.Comment: Main text: 5 pages, 4 figures. Revisiting the contribution of transpiration to global terrestrial evapotranspiration

    Get PDF
Even though knowing the contributions of transpiration (T), soil and open water evaporation (E), and interception (I) to terrestrial evapotranspiration (ET=T+E+I) is crucial for understanding the hydrological cycle and its connection to ecological processes, the fraction of T is unattainable by traditional measurement techniques over large scales. Previously reported global mean T/(E+T+I) from multiple independent sources, including satellite-based estimations, reanalysis, land surface models, and isotopic measurements, varies substantially from 24% to 90%. Here we develop a new ET partitioning algorithm, which combines global evapotranspiration estimates and relationships between leaf area index (LAI) and T/(E+T) for different vegetation types, to upscale a wide range of published site-scale measurements. We show that transpiration accounts for about 57.2% (with standard deviation6.8%) of global terrestrial ET. Our approach bridges the scale gap between site measurements and global model simulations, and can be simply implemented into current global climate models to improve biological CO2 flux simulations

    Get PDF
The purpose of this study was to determine whether second language writing anxiety and teacher’ communication behavior significantly predict students’ research self-efficacy. The working group for the present study, in which quantitative descriptive-predictive design was employed, included 187 students enrolled in Research 1 and 2 subjects at UM Digos College. The participants answered adapted standard questionnaires to quantify which dimension/s of Second Language Writing Anxiety and Teacher’s Communication Behavior significantly predict/s research self-efficacy. The gathered data were interpreted using the mean in determining the central tendency and Pearson-r. Regression analysis was used to predict the value of research self-efficacy based on the value of writing anxiety and teachers’ communication behavior. The results revealed that the level of L2 writing anxiety of students is moderate. Likewise, the level of teacher’s communication behavior was revealed as high and the level of research self-efficacy is also high. The result also shows that there is no significant relationship between L2 writing anxiety and research self-efficacy but indicators of L2 writing anxiety posed a significant relationship with research self-efficacy while teachers’ communication behavior resulted in no significant relationship to research self-efficacy, but two indicators of TCB posed a significant relationship to RSE. The findings corroborated the four domains for SLWA and TCB, which are cognitive, somatic, challenging, and encouragement and praise; significantly predict research self-efficacy. The findings obtained in this study suggest that students look for ways to enhance their confidence in performing tasks related to research papers.  Article visualizations

    Get PDF

THE MEDIATING EFFECT OF ENGLISH LANGUAGE ANXIETY ON THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN CLASSROOM LEARNING ENVIRONMENT AND COPING STRATEGIES

    Get PDF
This study investigated the mediating effect of English language anxiety on the relationship between classroom learning environment and coping strategies among first-year college students of UM Digos College. In order to do so, this study employed the quantitative research design using the descriptive and correlational method via mediation analysis. Using proportionate stratified random sampling, primary data were gathered through the use of online survey questionnaires addressed to 271 respondents who are first-year students with GE 2 subject. In addressing the hypotheses of the study, correlation analysis using Pearson product-moment correlation and mediation analysis using Sobel z test was used. The level of classroom learning environment, coping strategies, and English language anxiety were similarly high among college students. Results also revealed classroom learning environment has significantly predicted coping strategy. However, the classroom learning environment did not significantly predict English language anxiety. Further analysis through Sobel z test confirmed that the mediating effect of English language anxiety on the relationship between classroom learning environment and coping strategies is insignificant.  Article visualizations

This study determined to find out which domain of communicative adaptability and communication apprehension significantly predicts cognitive communication competence. A quantitative descriptive-predictive design was employed in this study. The research participants were 250 Grade 11 Senior High School students enrolled in English 1s – Oral Communication in Context at UM Digos Senior High School. The gathered data were analyzed and interpreted using the mean, standard deviation, Pearson-r, regression, and multiple linear regression. It was found that the SHS students have a high level of communicative adaptability, moderate communication apprehension, and a high level of cognitive communication competence. The study’s findings revealed a significant relationship between communicative adaptability and cognitive communication competence. In contrast, communication apprehension was adversely related to cognitive communication competence. Through multiple linear regression, the findings corroborated the three domains of communicative adaptability and communication apprehension: social confirmation, appropriate, and apprehension in small groups, significantly predict cognitive communication competence. The findings obtained in this study suggest that English language teachers may employ strategies and activities, with various contexts among various individuals, as performance tasks. It will help students adapt to various communication contexts, lessen communication apprehension, and improve communication competence.  Article visualizations
