The Archaeological Museum of Cordoba preserves three large sets of Islamic medieval coins which were minted in al-Andalus before AH 202/AD 817 and which are probably part of a huge hoard found in Villaviciosa (Cordoba) and known of since the third decade of the 20th century. Such a large set of coins, most of them in a particularly good state, provides strong archaeological evidence to sustain that the Umayyad Emirate of al-Andalus undertook the issuing of coins as a legal resource for the market purposes and the politics of taxes. This happened from the times of Abd al- Raman I, i.e. from the very beginnings of the Emirate, in spite of what has been claimed both in medieval and contemporary historiography.

Why classical perspective is not necessary to understand animation space. An alternative way to represent the stage

Nowadays, in the Western culture, it seems that “Perspective” is the only globally accepted way of understanding the graphic representation of objects in space. However, before this modern concept was understood as the main one to represent objects in depth, in other historical periods and distant cultures they had chosen completely different ways of representing space. This is a researching dissertation that is understood as a theoretical work related to the animation short film We are Glad, the personal final degree project of the author. In it, the alternative ways of representing space that differ from the Renaissance perspective has been analysed, and how they have influenced in the late animation world. When we talk about alternative ways of representing space, we are referring to systems like the one that took place during the High Middle Ages, or in distant cultures such as Africa or Oceania, in which object ‘s size and distribution in images don’t follow the same rules that we would do nowadays. In order to enclose our research field, the main examples that will be analysed are two that, in some way, share some aspects in common with We are Glad: The High Middle Ages art and its relationship with the American fifties cartoons. Thus, all the important aspects of these examples will be exposed and analysed in order to argument the main thesis of the dissertation: why traditional perspective is not necessary to understand space in animation. Peña Martín, S. Grammar and truth: time and tense according to Ibn al-Sīd

The Andalusi savant Ibn al-Sīd al-Batalyawsī (d. 521 H/1127 AD) was the author of a number of books conceived as a contribution to the study of language, text and interpretation, which provide us with the necessary elements to reconstruct his notional approach to verbal tenses, as well as his ideas about time in the broader context of Andalusi thinkers. Ibn al-Sīd is close to the rationalist grammarians from Baghdad in his description of Arabic tenses, grounded on the existence of present time in nature. Nevertheless, traces of other conceptions of time are to be found in Ibn al-Sīd’s books. We conclude that there were four different ways of viewing time, depending on the actual level of hermeneutical approach to truth

    Explanation in Science and Technology

This article seeks to emphasize the fact that technology, like science, can also offer us explanations about the world. The article begins by adopting a definition of technology as knowledge, thus establishing a continuity between science and technology that allows us to extend the work done on the issue of scientific explanation. Three proposals are analyzed for defining the concept of scientific explanation, with emphasis on Wesley Salmon’s causal mechanical model. Next, the case of the pressure and volume indicator diagram in the steam engine is analyzed, in which, despite the lack of a competent scientific theory to interpret the data obtained through a new instrument, our technological knowledge allowed for the generation of the explanations that the scientific theory of the time was unable to provide. The example meets the demands stipulated by the causal mechanical model of explanation but differs in that here the explanation was not the result of scientific knowledge. Rather, it was the technological knowledge provided by the indicator what generated a new explanation of the steam engine’s efficiency and functioning. A proposed model, built in Matlab®, represents the dynamical evolution in real electrolysers, and anticipates operational variables: level, pressure and all concentrations. Dynamic responses in the concentrations of the electrolytic cell, and variations in both level and pressure at the chamber due to the change in current and diffusivity, are reported. The equations by which the variables can be computed are also presented. The proposed model is ready for the corresponding adjustment of parameters based on experimental measurements taken from an available prototype and through a suitable identification process.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft

On the finite-dimensional representations of the double of the Jordan plane

We continue the study of the Drinfeld double of the Jordan plane, denoted by D\mathcal D and introduced in arXiv:2002.02514. The simple finite-dimensional modules were computed in arXiv:2108.13849; it turns out that they factorize through U(\spl_2(\Bbbk)). Here we introduce the Verma modules and the category O\mathfrak O for D\mathcal D, which have a resemblance to the similar ones in Lie theory but induced from indecomposable modules of the 0-part of the triangular decomposition. Accordingly, there is the notion of highest weight rank (hw-rk). We classify the indecomposable modules of hw-rk one and find families of hw-rk two. The Gabriel quiver of D\mathcal D is computed implying that it has a wild representation type
