Rebels at War, Criminals in Peace: A Critical Approach to Violence in Colombia

    Get PDF
This essay explores the meaning and significance of the Colombian peace agreements reached by Juan Manuel Santos’s government and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia—People’s Army (FARC-EP) on 24 November 2016 vis-à-vis a significant organizational shift within the national armed conflict and territorial dispute. By conducting a critical exposition of the armed conflict in Colombia, this essay contributes to the debate surrounding the (ex-)guerrillas’ demobilization and disarmament, highlighting the relevance of ideology for analyzing changes in the dynamics of violence in the so-called postconflict

Neurodevelopment Outcome in Children with Fetal Growth Restriction at Six Years of Age: A Retrospective Cohort Study

Objective: This study aimed to describe neurodevelopment in fetal growth restriction children at the age of six. Secondly, we tried to demonstrate influencing factors that can improve or exacerbate this development, as well as predictive factors that might select a population at risk to assist with early childhood support. Method: It was a study of 70 children affected with FGR. FGR was based on these definitions: birth weight below the 3rd percentile or birth weight below the 10th percentile with an abnormal hemodynamic Doppler study. Neurodevelopment was assessed at 6 years old by means of Batelle Development Inventory. A global development quotient under a 100 score was considered a neurodevelopment delay. All variables regarding pregnancy care, delivery episode, postpartum, neonatal care, sociodemographic issues, and the need for support in the first years were studied. Results: The mean gestational age at diagnosis was 33.14 weeks (standard deviation (SD = 4.31), with 32.9% of early-onset diagnoses. The mean gestational age at delivery was 35.61 (SD = 3.21), and the cesarean rate was 64.3%. The average age of the children at the moment of the evaluation was 76.20-month-old (SD = 3.70). The mean global development quotient was 97.28 (SD = 13.97). We were able to record a 57.1% of global development delay. In the cases of cognition, only 17.1% of the children registered a delay. Motor and communication skills were the most frequently affected. We discovered that socioeconomic status was positively related to the global development quotient, as well as both gestational age at delivery and middle cerebral artery pulsatility index was positively related to the global development quotient. Conclusions: We found a higher neurodevelopment delay rate (57.1%). We could relate a higher gestational age at delivery and a higher MCA percentile with better global neurodevelopment quotientsBenítez Marín MJ, Blanco Elena JA, Marín Clavijo J, Jiménez López J, Lubián López DM, González Mesa E. [EN] The purpose of this piece of research is to analize public instruments implemented to promote innovation in Spain and the results that were obtained among Spanish innovative companies. Along this paper, the National Innovation Strategy for Science, Technology and Innovation 2013-2020, and its impact, prior to the implementation of the next plan that will cover the period 2021-2027, have been analysed. This piece of research sheds light on the main weaknesses identified in the National Innovation Strategy for Science, Technology and Innovation 2021-2027, and particularly how and where it fails in boosting innovation in Spain. The main conclusions are useful for all involved parts, politicians as part of the public sector (Government), industry and academia as fundamental pillar of the Spanish innovation system.

    Get PDF
The application of time series methodologies in bond prices turns out to be a complex process due to its mathematical and financial characteristics. In particular, the coupon payment and the modified duration effect makes prices (clean and dirty) unable to be used correctly in time series applications. Academic community has proposed many different methodologies that could be applied to reduce the bias when estimating volatility on bond prices. It’s necessary to evaluate advantages and disadvantages on each of them, and analyze the characteristics that must have the time series. The investigation aims to propose a new methodology to estimate a time series that allow the modeling of Colombian public debt bond prices, observing its implementation in the volatility estimation

Home monitoring for older singles: A gas sensor array system

Many residential environments have been equipped with sensing technologies both to provide assistance to older people who have opted for aging-in-place and to provide information to caregivers and family. However, such technologies are often accompanied by physical discomfort, privacy concerns, and complexity of use. We explored the feasibility of monitoring home activity using chemical sensors that pose fewer privacy concerns than, for example, video-cameras and which do not suffer from blind spots. We built a monitoring device that integrates a sensor array and IoT capabilities to gather the necessary data about a resident in his/her living space. Over a period of 3 months, we uninterruptedly measured the living space of a typical elder person living on his/her own. To record the level of activity during the same period and obtain a ground truth for the activity, a set of motion sensors were also deployed in the house. Home activity was extracted from a PCA space moving-window which translated sensor data into the event space; this also compensated for environmental and sensor drift. Our results show that it is possible to monitor the person’s home activity and detect sudden deviations from it using a low-cost, non-invasive, system based on gas sensors that gather data on the air composition in the living space.
