    Quartic Parameters for Acoustic Applications of Lattice Boltzmann Scheme

    Using the Taylor expansion method, we show that it is possible to improve the lattice Boltzmann method for acoustic applications. We derive a formal expansion of the eigenvalues of the discrete approximation and fit the parameters of the scheme to enforce fourth order accuracy. The corresponding discrete equations are solved with the help of symbolic manipulation. The solutions are explicited in the case of D3Q27 lattice Boltzmann scheme. Various numerical tests support the coherence of this approach.Comment: 23 page

    Relations entre les facteurs du profil motivationnel d’élèves de sixième année du primaire et leurs anticipations envers le secondaire

    Le passage du primaire au secondaire représente un stress pour la majorité des élèves, sans qu’ils le perçoivent pour autant comme une étape entièrement négative. Jusqu’à maintenant, aucune étude n’a examiné les liens entre les anticipations des élèves de sixième année du primaire à l’égard du secondaire et leur profil motivationnel. La présente étude vise à comprendre comment les anticipations positives et négatives chez 793 élèves sont liées à des variables particulières. Les analyses font voir que l’optimisme, la hâte d’aller au secondaire, les buts d’apprentissage et la conception de l’intelligence sont reliés aux anticipations positives. Les mêmes variables présentent aussi des liens avec les anticipations négatives, le sexe des élèves et leur sentiment d’efficacité.The transition between primary school and high school represents a stressing event for the majority of the students. However, they do not perceive that transition as an entirely negative experience. Until today, no study has focused on the relationship between six graders’ anticipations towards high school and their motivational profile. The main objective of the present study is to understand how the positive and negative anticipations of 793 pupils are related to particular variables. The results of the analyses show that optimism, the eagerness to go to high school, the learning goals and the conception of intelligence are connected to positive anticipations. Those same variables are also related to negative anticipations, as well as to pupils’ gender and their feeling of effectiveness.La transición de la primaria a la secundaria representa un acontecimiento estresante para la mayoría de los alumnos, sin por eso que lo vean como una etapa totalmente negativa. Hasta ahora, ningún estudio ha examinado las relaciones entre las anticipaciones de los alumnos de sexto grado de primaria hacia la secundaria y su perfil motivacional. El presente estudio tiene por propósito entender cómo las anticipaciones positivas y negativas en 793 alumnos son ligadas a variables particulares. Los resultados de los análisis demuestran que el optimismo, el deseo anticipado de llegar a la secundaria, las metas de aprendizaje y la concepción de la inteligencia son relacionados con anticipaciones positivas. Asimismo, las mismas variables presentan relaciones con las anticipaciones negativas, el sexo de los alumnos y su sentimiento de eficacia.Die Versetzung von der Grundschule zur Sekundarstufe erweist sich für die Mehrheit der Schüler als ein stressiges Ereignis, ohne daß es von ihnen als ein total negativer Abschnitt angesehen wird. Bis heute hat noch keine Studie die Zusammenhänge zwischen den Erwartungen der Schüler der sechsten Grundschulklasse im Hinblick auf die Sekundarstufe, und dem Motivationsprofil, untersucht. Die gegenwärtige Studie zielt darauf ab, zu verstehen, wie die positiven und negativen Erwartungen bei 793 Schulern mit besonderen Variablen zusammenhängen. Die Ergebnisse der Analyse zeigen, daß der Optimismus, die Eile in die Sekundarstufe zu gelangen, die Lernziele und die Intelligenzkonzeption an positive Erwartungen gebunden sind. Die gleichen Variablen zeigen auch den Zusammenhang mit negativen Erwartungen, dem Geschlecht der Schüler und ihr Empfinden fuer Leistungsfähigkeit

    Association of brain network dynamics with plasma biomarkers in subjective memory complainers

    Using a single integrated analysis, we examined the relationship between brain networks and molecular pathways in a cohort of elderly individuals at risk for Alzheimer's disease. In 205 subjective memory complainers (124 females, mean age: 75.7 ± 3.4), individual functional connectome was computed for a total of 3081 functional connections (set A) and 6 core plasma biomarkers of Alzheimer's disease (set B) were assessed. Partial least squares correlation analysis identified one dimension of population covariation between the 2 sets (p < 0.006), which we named bioneural mode. Five core plasma biomarkers and 190 functional connections presented bootstrap ratios greater than the critical value |1.96|. T-tau protein showed a trend toward significance (bootstrap resampling = 1.64). The salience, the language, the visuospatial, and the default mode networks were the strongest significant networks. We detected a strong association between network dynamics and core pathophysiological blood biomarkers. Innovative composite biomarkers, such as the bioneural mode, are promising to provide outcomes and better inform drug development and clinical practice for neurodegenerative diseases

    Staphylococcus epidermidis glucose uptake in biofilm versus planktonic cells

    The aim of this work was to compare the glucose uptake of biofilms formed by four different Staphylococcus epidermidis strains as well as to compare between sessile and planktonic cells of the same strain. Biofilm cells showed a lower level of glucose uptake compared to planktonic cells. Moreover, glucose uptake by cells in the sessile form was strongly influenced by biofilm composition.     Age and sex impact plasma NFL and t-Tau trajectories in individuals with subjective memory complaints: a 3-year follow-up study

    BACKGROUND: Plasma neurofilament light (NFL) and total Tau (t-Tau) proteins are candidate biomarkers for early stages of Alzheimer's disease (AD). The impact of biological factors on their plasma concentrations in individuals with subjective memory complaints (SMC) has been poorly explored. We longitudinally investigate the effect of sex, age, APOE ε4 allele, comorbidities, brain amyloid-β (Aβ) burden, and cognitive scores on plasma NFL and t-Tau concentrations in cognitively healthy individuals with SMC, a condition associated with AD development. METHODS: Three hundred sixteen and 79 individuals, respectively, have baseline and three-time point assessments (at baseline, 1-year, and 3-year follow-up) of the two biomarkers. Plasma biomarkers were measured with an ultrasensitive assay in a mono-center cohort (INSIGHT-preAD study). RESULTS: We show an effect of age on plasma NFL, with women having a higher increase of plasma t-Tau concentrations compared to men, over time. The APOE ε4 allele does not affect the biomarker concentrations while plasma vitamin B12 deficiency is associated with higher plasma t-Tau concentrations. Both biomarkers are correlated and increase over time. Baseline NFL is related to the rate of Aβ deposition at 2-year follow-up in the left-posterior cingulate and the inferior parietal gyri. Baseline plasma NFL and the rate of change of plasma t-Tau are inversely associated with cognitive score. CONCLUSION: We find that plasma NFL and t-Tau longitudinal trajectories are affected by age and female sex, respectively, in SMC individuals.     Matrix-Assisted Laser Desorption Ionization-Time of Flight Mass Spectrometry for the Identification of Clinically Relevant Bacteria

    Background: Matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) allows rapid and reliable identification of microorganisms, particularly clinically important pathogens. Methodology/Principal Findings: We compared the identification efficiency of MALDI-TOF MS with that of PhoenixH, APIH and 16S ribosomal DNA sequence analysis on 1,019 strains obtained from routine diagnostics. Further, we determined the agreement of MALDI-TOF MS identifications as compared to 16S gene sequencing for additional 545 strains belonging to species of Enterococcus, Gardnerella, Staphylococcus, and Streptococcus. For 94.7 % of the isolates MALDI-TOF MS results were identical with those obtained with conventional systems. 16S sequencing confirmed MALDI-TOF MS identification in 63 % of the discordant results. Agreement of identification of Gardnerella, Enterococcus, Streptococcus and Staphylococcus species between MALDI-TOF MS and traditional method was high (Crohn’s kappa values: 0.9 to 0.93). Conclusions/Significance: MALDI-TOF MS represents a rapid, reliable and cost-effective identification technique for clinically relevant bacteria

    Dose Effects of Oxaliplatin on Persistent and Transient Na+ Conductances and the Development of Neurotoxicity

    BACKGROUND: Oxaliplatin, a platinum-based chemotherapy utilised in the treatment of colorectal cancer, produces two forms of neurotoxicity--acute sensorimotor neuropathic symptoms and a dose-limiting chronic sensory neuropathy. Given that a Na(+) channelopathy has been proposed as the mechanism underlying acute oxaliplatin-induced neuropathy, the present study aimed to determine specific mechanisms of Na(+) channel dysfunction. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Specifically the function of transient and persistent Na(+) currents were followed during treatment and were investigated in relation to oxaliplatin dose level. Eighteen patients were assessed before and after a single oxaliplatin infusion with motor and sensory axonal excitability studies performed on the median nerve at the wrist. While refractoriness (associated with Na(+) channel inactivation) was significantly altered post-oxaliplatin infusion in both motor (Pre: 31.7±6.4%; Post: 68.8±14.5%; P≤.001) and sensory axons (Pre: 31.4±5.4%; Post: 21.4±5.5%; P<.05), strength-duration time constant (marker of persistent Na(+) conductances) was not significantly altered post-infusion (Motor Pre: 0.395±0.01 ms; Post: 0.394±0.02 ms; NS; Sensory Pre:0.544±0.03 ms; Post: 0.535±0.05 ms; NS). However, changes in strength-duration time constant were significantly correlated with changes in refractoriness in motor and sensory axons (Motor correlation coefficient = -.65; P<.05; Sensory correlation coefficient = .67; P<.05). CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE: It is concluded that the predominant effect of acute oxaliplatin exposure in human motor and sensory axons is mediated through changes in transient rather than persistent Na(+) conductances. These findings are likely to have implications for the design and trial of neuroprotective strategies

    Equilibrium and dynamical properties of two dimensional self-gravitating systems

    A system of N classical particles in a 2D periodic cell interacting via long-range attractive potential is studied. For low energy density UU a collapsed phase is identified, while in the high energy limit the particles are homogeneously distributed. A phase transition from the collapsed to the homogeneous state occurs at critical energy U_c. A theoretical analysis within the canonical ensemble identifies such a transition as first order. But microcanonical simulations reveal a negative specific heat regime near UcU_c. The dynamical behaviour of the system is affected by this transition : below U_c anomalous diffusion is observed, while for U > U_c the motion of the particles is almost ballistic. In the collapsed phase, finite NN-effects act like a noise source of variance O(1/N), that restores normal diffusion on a time scale diverging with N. As a consequence, the asymptotic diffusion coefficient will also diverge algebraically with N and superdiffusion will be observable at any time in the limit N \to \infty. A Lyapunov analysis reveals that for U > U_c the maximal exponent \lambda decreases proportionally to N^{-1/3} and vanishes in the mean-field limit.     Stepwise Optimization of the Procedure for Assessment of Circulating Progenitor Cells in Patients with Myocardial Infarction

    The number and functional activity of circulating progenitor cells (CPCs) is altered in diabetic patients. Furthermore, reduced CPC count has been shown to independently predict cardiovascular events. Validation of CPCs as a biomarker for cardiovascular risk stratification requires rigorous methodology. Before a standard operation protocol (SOP) can be designed for such a trial, a variety of technical issues have to be addressed fundamentally, which include the appropriate type of red blood cell lysis buffer, FMO or isotype controls to identify rare cell populations from background noise, optimal antibody dilutions and conditions of sample storage. We herein propose improvements in critical steps of CPC isolation, antigenic characterization and determination of functional competence for final application in a prospective investigation of CPCs as a biomarker of outcome following acute myocardial infarction.In this validation study, we refined the standard operating procedure (SOP) for flow cytometry characterisation and functional analysis of CPCs from the first 18 patients of the Progenitor Cell Response after Myocardial Infarction Study (ProMIS). ProMIS aims to verify the prognostic value of CPCs in patients with either ST elevation or non-ST elevation myocardial infarction with or without diabetes mellitus, using cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for assessment of ventricular function as a primary endpoint. Results indicate crucial steps for SOP implementation, namely timely cell isolation after sampling, use of appropriate lysis buffer to separate blood cell types and minimize the acquisition events during flow cytometry, adoption of proper fluorophore combination and antibody titration for multiple antigenic detection and introduction of counting beads for precise quantification of functional CPC activity in migration assay.With systematic specification of factors influencing the enumeration of CPC by flow cytometry, the abundance and migration capacity of CPCs can be correctly assessed. Adoption of validated SOP is essential for refined comparison of patients with different comorbidities in the analysis of risk stratification
