We present a framework for media interpretation that leverages low-level information extraction to a higher level of abstraction in
order to support semantics-based information
retrieval for the Semantic Web. The overall
goal of the framework is to provide high-level
content descriptions of documents for maximizing precision and recall of semantics-based
information retrieval
Interaction between dust grains near a conducting wall
The effect of the conducting electrode on the interaction of dust grains in a
an ion flow is discussed. It is shown that two grains levitating above the
electrode at the same height may attract one another. This results in the

Self consistent theory of unipolar charge-carrier injection in metal/insulator/metal systems
A consistent device model to describe current-voltage characteristics of
metal/insulator/metal systems is developed. In this model the insulator and the
metal electrodes are described within the same theoretical framework by using
density of states distributions. This approach leads to differential equations
for the electric field which have to be solved in a self consistent manner by
considering the continuity of the electric displacement and the electrochemical
potential in the complete system. The model is capable of describing the
current-voltage characteristics of the metal/insulator/metal system in forward
and reverse bias for arbitrary values of the metal/ insulator injection
barriers. In the case of high injection barriers, approximations are provided
offering a tool for comparison with experiments. Numerical calculations are
performed exemplary using a simplified model of an organic semiconductor.Comment: 21 pages, 8 figure
Self-consistent model of unipolar transport in organic semiconductor diodes: accounting for a realistic density-of-states distribution
A self-consistent, mean-field model of charge-carrier injection and unipolar
transport in an organic semiconductor diode is developed utilizing the
effective transport energy concept and taking into account a realistic
density-of-states distribution as well as the presence of trap states in an
organic material. The consequences resulting from the model are discussed
exemplarily on the basis of an indium tin oxide/organic semiconductor/metallic
conductor structure. A comparison of the theory to experimental data of a
unipolar indium tin oxide/poly-3-hexyl-thiophene/Al device is presented.Comment: 6 pages, 2 figures; to be published in Journal of Applied Physic
Stationary Velocity and Charge Distributions of Grains in Dusty Plasmas
Within the kinetic approach velocity and charge distributions of grains in
stationary dusty plasmas are calculated and the relations between the effective
temperatures of such distributions and plasma parameters are established. It is
found that the effective temperature which determines the velocity grain
distribution could be anomalously large due to the action of accelerating ionic
bombarding force. The possibility to apply the results obtained to the
explanation of the increasing grain temperature in the course of the
Coulomb-crystal melting by reduction of the gas pressure is discussed. This

Non-Simplified SUSY: Stau-Coannihilation at LHC and ILC
If new phenomena beyond the Standard Model will be discovered at the LHC, the
properties of the new particles could be determined with data from the
High-Luminosity LHC and from a future linear collider like the ILC. We discuss
the possible interplay between measurements at the two accelerators in a
concrete example, namely a full SUSY model which features a small stau_1-LSP
mass difference. Various channels have been studied using the Snowmass 2013
combined LHC detector implementation in the Delphes simulation package, as well
as simulations of the ILD detector concept from the Technical Design Report. We
investigate both the LHC and ILC capabilities for discovery, separation and
identification of various parts of the spectrum. While some parts would be
discovered at the LHC, there is substantial room for further discoveries at the
ILC. We finally highlight examples where the precise knowledge about the lower
part of the mass spectrum which could be acquired at the ILC would enable a
more in-depth analysis of the LHC data with respect to the heavier states.Comment: 42 pages, 18 figures, 12 table
Field experiments on individual adaptation of the spider crab Inachus phalangium to its sea anemone host Anemonia viridis in the northern Adriatic Sea
We studied the adaptation of the spider crab Inachus phalangium (Fabricius, 1755) to one of its sea anemone host species, Anemonia viridis (Forsskål, 1775) in the coastal region of Rovinj, Croatia. Similar to other brachyuran species, Inachus spp. generally lives within the anemone to obtain protection from possible predators. Using removal and reintroduction experiments, this study investigates the protection mechanism and shows a loss of adaptation after a period of 10 days when the crabs are taken out of their host and kept solitary. Thirty-nine anemones from two different trial sites were marked individually and the inhabiting crabs were isolated to be released back into their individual hosts later. The reactions of the anemones were closely observed and characterized to determine the respective state of crab adaptation. As 35 out of 39 individuals provoked a defense /attack reaction of the anemone, it is concluded that the crabs possessed some sort of non-permanent protection mechanism that was lost during the test run (chi-square test, p < 0.00014). All tested crabs re-inhabited their host anemones within a maximum of 20 minutes after they had been reintroduced and stung by the anemones. Therefore, habituation to the host’s defense / attack mechanism is acquired individually and not genetically inherent to the species. The results are compared to adaptation and protection data on other decapod crustaceans and some anemonefishes

We compared the distribution by wealth of self-reported illness burden (estimated from validated scales, biomarker and reported symptoms) for angina, cataract, depression, diabetes and osteoarthritis, with the distribution of self-reported medical diagnosis and treatment. We aimed to determine if the greater illness burden borne by poorer participants was matched by appropriately higher levels of diagnosis and treatment
Treatment of tuberculosis in a region with high drug resistance: Outcomes, drug resistance amplification and re-infection
Introduction: Emerging antituberculosis drug resistance is a serious threat for tuberculosis (TB) control, especially in Eastern
European countries.
Methods: We combined drug susceptibility results and molecular strain typing data with treatment outcome reports to
assess the influence of drug resistance on TB treatment outcomes in a prospective cohort of patients from Abkhazia
(Georgia). Patients received individualized treatment regimens based on drug susceptibility testing (DST) results. Definitions
for antituberculosis drug resistance and treatment outcomes were in line with current WHO recommendations. First and
second line DST, and molecular typing were performed in a supranational laboratory for Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB)
strains from consecutive sputum smear-positive TB patients at baseline and during treatment.
Results: At baseline, MTB strains were fully drug-susceptible in 189/326 (58.0%) of patients. Resistance to at least H or R
(PDR-TB) and multidrug-resistance (MDR-TB) were found in 69/326 (21.2%) and 68/326 (20.9%) of strains, respectively. Three
MDR-TB strains were also extensively resistant (XDR-TB). During treatment, 3/189 (1.6%) fully susceptible patients at baseline
were re-infected with a MDR-TB strain and 2/58 (3.4%) PDR-TB patients became MDR-TB due to resistance amplification. 5/
47 (10.6%) MDR- patients became XDR-TB during treatment. Treatment success was observed in 161/189 (85.2%), 54/69
(78.3%) and 22/68 (32.3%) of patients with fully drug susceptible, PDR- and MDR-TB, respectively. Development of ofloxacin
resistance was significantly associated with a negative treatment outcome.
Conclusion: In Abkhazia, a region with high prevalence of drug resistant TB, the use of individualized MDR-TB treatment
regimens resulted in poor treatment outcomes and XDR-TB amplification. Nosocomial transmission of MDR-TB emphasizes
the importance of infection control in hospitals
Self-consistent analytical solution of a problem of charge-carrier injection at a conductor/insulator interface
We present a closed description of the charge carrier injection process from
a conductor into an insulator. Common injection models are based on single
electron descriptions, being problematic especially once the amount of
charge-carriers injected is large. Accordingly, we developed a model, which
incorporates space charge effects in the description of the injection process.
The challenge of this task is the problem of self-consistency. The amount of
charge-carriers injected per unit time strongly depends on the energy barrier
emerging at the contact, while at the same time the electrostatic potential
generated by the injected charge- carriers modifies the height of this
injection barrier itself. In our model, self-consistency is obtained by
assuming continuity of the electric displacement and the electrochemical
potential all over the conductor/insulator system. The conductor and the
insulator are properly taken into account by means of their respective density
of state distributions. The electric field distributions are obtained in a
closed analytical form and the resulting current-voltage characteristics show
that the theory embraces injection-limited as well as bulk-limited
charge-carrier transport. Analytical approximations of these limits are given,
revealing physical mechanisms responsible for the particular current-voltage
behavior. In addition, the model exhibits the crossover between the two
limiting cases and determines the validity of respective approximations. The
consequences resulting from our exactly solvable model are discussed on the
