The unusual pulsation spectrum of the cool ZZ Ceti star HS 0507+0434B
We present the analysis of one week of single-site high-speed CCD photometric
observations of the cool ZZ Ceti star HS 0507+0434B. Ten independent
frequencies are detected in the star's light variations: one singlet and three
nearly-equally spaced triplets. We argue that these triplets are due to
rotationally split modes of spherical degree l=1. This is the first detection
of consistent multiplet structure in the amplitude spectrum of a cool ZZ Ceti
star and it allows us to determine the star's rotation period: 1.70 +/- 0.11 d.
We report exactly equal frequency, not period, spacings between the detected
mode groups. In addition, certain pairs of modes from the four principal groups
have frequency ratios which are very close to 3:4 or 4:5; while these ratios
are nearly exact (within one part in 10^4), they still lie outside the computed
error bars. We speculate that these relationships between different frequencies
could be caused by resonances. One of the three triplets may not be constant in
amplitude and/or frequency.
We compare our frequency solution for the combination frequencies (of which
we detected 38) to Wu's (1998, 2001) model thereof. We obtain consistent
results when trying to infer the star's convective thermal time and the
inclination angle of its rotational axis. Theoretical combination-frequency
amplitude spectra also resemble those of the observations well, and direct
theoretical predictions of the observed second-order light-curve distortions
were also reasonably successful assuming the three triplets are due to l=1
modes. Attempts to reproduce the observed combination frequencies adopting all
possible l=2 identifications for the triplets did not provide similarly
consistent results, supporting their identification with l=1.Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS; 12 pages, 8 figure
Microscopic mechanism for mechanical polishing of diamond (110) surfaces
Mechanically induced degradation of diamond, as occurs during polishing, is
studied using total--energy pseudopotential calculations. The strong asymmetry
in the rate of polishing between different directions on the diamond (110)
surface is explained in terms of an atomistic mechanism for nano--groove
formation. The post--polishing surface morphology and the nature of the
polishing residue predicted by this mechanism are consistent with experimental

Revisiting the theoretical DBV (V777 Her) instability strip: the MLT theory of convection
We reexamine the theoretical instability domain of pulsating DB white dwarfs
(DBV or V777 Her variables). We performed an extensive -mode nonadiabatic
pulsation analysis of DB evolutionary models considering a wide range of
stellar masses, for which the complete evolutionary stages of their progenitors
from the ZAMS, through the thermally pulsing AGB and born-again phases, the
domain of the PG1159 stars, the hot phase of DO white dwarfs, and then the DB
white dwarf stage have been considered. We explicitly account for the evolution
of the chemical abundance distribution due to time-dependent chemical diffusion
processes. We examine the impact of the different prescriptions of the MLT
theory of convection and the effects of small amounts of H in the almost
He-pure atmospheres of DB stars on the precise location of the theoretical blue

Rethinking professional practice: the logic of competition and the crisis of identity in housing practice
The relationship between professionalism, education and housing practice has become increasingly strained following the introduction of austerity measures and welfare reforms across a range of countries. Focusing on the development of UK housing practice, this article considers how notions of professionalism are being reshaped within the context of welfare retrenchment and how emerging tensions have both affected the identity of housing professionals and impacted on the delivery of training and education programmes. The article analyses the changing knowledge and skills valued in contemporary housing practice and considers how the sector has responded to the challenges of austerity. The central argument is that a dominant logic of competition has culminated in a crisis of identity for the sector. Although the focus of the article is on UK housing practice, the processes identified have a wider relevance for the analysis of housing and welfare delivery in developed economies
HIV-1 Infection Causes a Down-Regulation of Genes Involved in Ribosome Biogenesis
HIV-1 preferentially infects CD4+ T cells, causing fundamental changes that eventually lead to the release of new viral particles and cell death. To investigate in detail alterations in the transcriptome of the CD4+ T cells upon viral infection, we sequenced polyadenylated RNA isolated from Jurkat cells infected or not with HIV-1. We found a marked global alteration of gene expression following infection, with an overall trend toward induction of genes, indicating widespread modification of the host biology. Annotation and pathway analysis of the most deregulated genes showed that viral infection produces a down-regulation of genes associated with the nucleolus, in particular those implicated in regulating the different steps of ribosome biogenesis, such as ribosomal RNA (rRNA) transcription, pre-rRNA processing, and ribosome maturation. The impact of HIV-1 infection on genes involved in ribosome biogenesis was further validated in primary CD4+ T cells. Moreover, we provided evidence by Northern Blot experiments, that host pre-rRNA processing in Jurkat cells might be perturbed during HIV-1 infection, thus strengthening the hypothesis of a crosstalk between nucleolar functions and viral pathogenesis
A mixed ultrasoft/normconserved pseudopotential scheme
A variant of the Vanderbilt ultrasoft pseudopotential scheme, where the
normconservation is released for only one or a few angular channels, is
presented. Within this scheme some difficulties of the truly ultrasoft
pseudopotentials are overcome without sacrificing the pseudopotential softness.
i) Ghost states are easily avoided without including semicore shells. ii) The
ultrasoft pseudo-charge-augmentation functions can be made more soft. iii) The
number of nonlocal operators is reduced. The scheme will be most useful for
transition metals, and the feasibility and accuracy of the scheme is
demonstrated for the 4d transition metal rhodium.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figure
The stigmatisation of people with chronic back pain
This study responded to the need for better theoretical understanding of experiences that shape the beliefs, attitudes and needs of chronic back patients attending pain clinics. The aim was explore and conceptualise the experiences of people of working age who seek help from pain clinics for chronic back pain. Methods. This was a qualitative study, based on an interpretative phenomenological approach (IPA). During in-depth interviews in their homes, participants were invited to 'tell their story' from the time their pain began. Participants were twelve male and six female patients, aged between 28 and 62 years, diagnosed as having chronic benign back pain. All had recently attended one of two pain clinics as new referrals. The interview transcripts were analysed thematically. Findings. Stigmatisation emerged as a key theme from the narrative accounts of participants. The findings expose subtle as well as overt stigmatising responses by family, friends, health professionals and the general public which appeared to have a profound effect on the perceptions, self esteem and behaviours of those interviewed. Conclusions. The findings suggest that patients with chronic back pain feel stigmatised by the time they attend pain clinics and this may affect their attitudes and behaviours towards those offering professional help. Theories of chronic pain need to accommodate these responses, while pain management programmes need to address the realities and practicalities of dealing with stigma in everyday life
