A network approach to studying research programmes : mobilizing and coordinating public responses to HIV/AIDS

Based on the analysis of the Medical and Public Health Research programme (Commission of the European Communities), the paper shows how new scientific communities are created in response to the HIV/AIDS problem. We analyze how actors are mobilized (three mobilization modes : public impetus, scientists'initiative, scientists' initiative with public networking) and how their work is coordinated. We defend the hypothesis that these new scientific communities are flexible cooperation networks. In the case of AIDS research, there are only a limited number of network types (the data collection structure, the forum, the thematic partition with harmonization of research practices, the starred around a central facility). The coordination of these scientific cooperative networks passes through fixed and circulating intermediaries. The management of these intermediaries is a major activity for involved actors. thus, our aim is not to study the wider social context, but to analyze networking in response to policy initiatives. Using ontologies to map between research data and policymakers’ presumptions: the experience of the KNOWMAK project

Understanding knowledge co-creation in key emerging areas of European research is critical for policy makers wishing to analyze impact and make strategic decisions. However, purely data-driven methods for characterising policy topics have limitations relating to the broad nature of such topics and the differences in language and topic structure between the political language and scientific and technological outputs. In this paper, we discuss the use of ontologies and semantic technologies as a means to bridge the linguistic and conceptual gap between policy questions and data sources for characterising European knowledge production. Our experience suggests that the integration between advanced techniques for language processing and expert assessment at critical junctures in the process is key for the success of this endeavour

Ground state representations of loop algebras

Let g be a simple Lie algebra, Lg be the loop algebra of g. Fixing a point in S^1 and identifying the real line with the punctured circle, we consider the subalgebra Sg of Lg of rapidly decreasing elements on R. We classify the translation-invariant 2-cocycles on Sg. We show that the ground state representation of Sg is unique for each cocycle. These ground states correspond precisely to the vacuum representations of Lg.Comment: 22 pages, no figur

Spectral triples and the super-Virasoro algebra

We construct infinite dimensional spectral triples associated with representations of the super-Virasoro algebra. In particular the irreducible, unitary positive energy representation of the Ramond algebra with central charge c and minimal lowest weight h=c/24 is graded and gives rise to a net of even theta-summable spectral triples with non-zero Fredholm index. The irreducible unitary positive energy representations of the Neveu-Schwarz algebra give rise to nets of even theta-summable generalised spectral triples where there is no Dirac operator but only a superderivation.Comment: 27 pages; v2: a comment concerning the difficulty in defining cyclic cocycles in the NS case have been adde

    Stability conditions and Stokes factors

Let A be the category of modules over a complex, finite-dimensional algebra. We show that the space of stability conditions on A parametrises an isomonodromic family of irregular connections on P^1 with values in the Hall algebra of A. The residues of these connections are given by the holomorphic generating function for counting invariants in A constructed by D. Joyce.Comment: Very minor changes. Final version. Objective. To determine the level of transformational leadership predominant in the authorities of the Universidad Nacional del Centro del Perú in Huancayo, according to the perception of teachers. Methods. The study had a quantitative approach, basic type and non-experimental, cross-sectional and simple descriptive design. The population consisted of 823 teachers of the University, distributed among 25 faculties. The sample consisted of 150 teachers, selected by non-probabilistic sampling by quotas. For data collection, the abbreviated multifactorial leadership questionnaire (MLQ short form 5X) of Bass and Avolio (1997) was applied. Results. A preponderance of high level of transformational leadership was found (46.7 %), followed by moderate level (32 %), low level (12 %), very high level (6.7 %) and very low level (2.7 %). Conclusion. According to the perception of teachers, a high level of transformational leadership predominates in the authorities of the Universidad Nacional del Centro del Perú in Huancayo.
