BackgroundPost-transplant lymphoproliferative disorders (PTLD) are heterogeneous lymphoid disorders ranging from indolent polyclonal proliferations to aggressive lymphomas that can arise after solid organ transplantation (SOT) and allogeneic hematopoietic transplantation (allo-HSCT).MethodsIn this multi-center retrospective study, we compare patient characteristics, therapies, and outcomes of PTLD after allo-HSCT and SOT. Twenty-five patients (15 after allo-HSCT and 10 after SOT) were identified who developed PTLD between 2008 and 2022.ResultsMedian age (57 years; range, 29-74 years) and baseline characteristics were comparable between the two groups (allo-HSCT vs SOT), but median onset of PTLD was markedly shorter after allo-HSCT (2 months vs. 99 months, P<0.001). Treatment regimens were heterogeneous, with reduction of immunosuppression in combination with rituximab being the most common first-line treatment strategy in both cohorts (allo-HSCT: 66%; SOT: 80%). The overall response rate was lower in the allo-HSCT (67%) as compared to the SOT group (100%). Consequently, the overall survival (OS) trended towards a worse outcome for the allo-HSCT group (1-year OS: 54% vs. 78%; P=0.58). We identified PTLD onset ≤150 days in the allo-HSCT (P=0.046) and ECOG >2 in the SOT group (P=0.03) as prognostic factors for lower OS.ConclusionPTLD cases present heterogeneously and pose unique challenges after both types of allogeneic transplantation

Age Determination of Six Intermediate-age SMC Star Clusters with HST/ACS

We present a photometric analysis of the star clusters Lindsay 1, Kron 3, NGC339, NGC416, Lindsay 38, and NGC419 in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC), observed with the Hubble Space Telescope Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) in the F555W and F814W filters. Our color magnitude diagrams (CMDs) extend ~3.5 mag deeper than the main-sequence turnoff points, deeper than any previous data. Cluster ages were derived using three different isochrone models: Padova, Teramo, and Dartmouth, which are all available in the ACS photometric system. Fitting observed ridgelines for each cluster, we provide a homogeneous and unique set of low-metallicity, single-age fiducial isochrones. The cluster CMDs are best approximated by the Dartmouth isochrones for all clusters, except for NGC419 where the Padova isochrones provided the best fit. The CMD of NGC419 shows several main-sequence turn-offs, which belong to the cluster and to the SMC field. We thus derive an age range of 1.2-1.6 Gyr for NGC419. Interestingly, our intermediate-age star clusters have a metallicity spread of ~0.6 dex, which demonstrates that the SMC does not have a smooth, monotonic age-metallicity relation. We find an indication for centrally concentrated blue straggler star candidates in NGC416, while for the other clusters these are not present. Using the red clump magnitudes, we find that the closest cluster, NGC419 (~50kpc), and the farthest cluster, Lindsay 38 (~67kpc), have a relative distance of ~17kpc, which confirms the large depth of the SMC.Comment: 25 pages, 45 Figure

Electronic structure, local magnetism, and spin-orbit effects of Ir(IV)-, Ir(V)-, and Ir(VI)-based compounds

Element- and orbital-selective x-ray absorption and magnetic circular dichroism measurements are carried out to probe the electronic structure and magnetism of Ir 5d electronic states in double perovskite Sr2MIrO6 (M=Mg, Ca, Sc, Ti, Ni, Fe, Zn, In) and La2NiIrO6 compounds. All the studied systems present a significant influence of spin-orbit interactions in the electronic ground state. In addition, we find that the Ir 5d local magnetic moment shows different character depending on the oxidation state despite the net magnetization being similar for all the compounds. Ir carries an orbital contribution comparable to the spin contribution for Ir4+ (5d5) and Ir5+ (5d4) oxides, whereas the orbital contribution is quenched for Ir6+ (5d3) samples. Incorporation of a magnetic 3d atom allows getting insight into the magnetic coupling between 5d and 3d transition metals. Together with previous susceptibility and neutron diffraction measurements, the results indicate that Ir carries a significant local magnetic moment even in samples without a 3d metal. The size of the (small) net magnetization of these compounds is a result of predominant antiferromagnetic interactions between local moments coupled with structural details of each perovskite structure

Structural Parameters of Seven SMC Intermediate-Age and Old Star Clusters

We present structural parameters for the seven intermediate-age and old star clusters NGC121, Lindsay 1, Kron 3, NGC339, NGC416, Lindsay 38, and NGC419 in the Small Magellanic Cloud. We fit King profiles and Elson, Fall, and Freeman profiles to both surface-brightness and star count data taken with the Advanced Camera for Surveys aboard the Hubble Space Telescope. Clusters older than 1 Gyr show a spread in cluster core radii that increases with age, while the youngest clusters have relatively compact cores. No evidence for post core collapse clusters was found. We find no correlation between core radius and distance from the SMC center, although consistent with other studies of dwarf galaxies, some relatively old and massive clusters have low densities. The oldest SMC star cluster, the only globular NGC121, is the most elliptical object of the studied clusters. No correlation is seen between ellipticity and distance from the SMC center. The structures of these massive intermediate-age (1-8 Gyr) SMC star clusters thus appear to primarily result from internal evolutionary processes.Comment: 16 pages, 13 figure

Registries in systemic sclerosis: a worldwide experience

    Get PDF
SSc is a multisystem disease characterized by an unpredictable course, high mortality and resistance to therapy. The complexity and severity of SSc is a growing burden on the health-care systems. As a result, researchers are seeking new therapeutic strategies for effectively managing these patients. Disease registries are used to support care management efforts for groups of patients with chronic diseases and are meaningful to capture and track key patient information to assist the physicians in managing patients. For these reasons, SSc surveys, research associations and consortiums are pivotal to conduct ongoing research and data collection to enhance disease knowledge and support research projects. Currently, there are several national SSc registries in the UK, Germany, USA, Canada, Brazil and Australia. There is also an international registry established by the European League Against Rheumatism scleroderma trial and research (EUSTAR) called minimal essential data set (MEDS) Online, which collects data from over 8000 patients from 92 centres worldwide, including 21 European centres and 9 centres outside Europe. By collecting, analysing and disseminating data on disease progression and patient responses to long-term disease management strategies, registries help to improve understanding of the disease and keep medical professionals up to date on the latest advance

Impact of inotuzumab ozogamicin on outcome in relapsed or refractory acute B-cell lymphoblastic leukemia patients prior to allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation and risk of sinusoidal obstruction syndrome/venous occlusive disease

: We evaluated 58 patients with relapsed or refractory (r/r) acute B-lymphoblastic leukemia (B-ALL; median age 42.5 years; range, 16-69 years), treated with inotuzumab ozogamicin (INO) between 2016-2022 and who received an allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HCT) consecutively. Forty-seven (81%) of the 58 patients were heavily pretreated receiving intensive chemotherapy +/- tyrosine kinase inhibitor, blinatumomab in 24 (41%) and allo-HCT at first-line in 11 (19%) patients. Complete remission rate prior to allo-HCT was 84%. Median follow-up was 30.5 months and median overall survival (OS) measured from start of INO was 11.2 months. One- and 2-year OS rates were 50% (95% confidence interval [CI]: 38.4-56.1) and 36.7% (95% CI: 25.5-52.9), respectively. Sinusoidal obstruction syndrome/venous occlusive disease (SOS/ VOD) after allo-HCT occurred in 17 (29%) patients. Of those, nine (53%) patients died due to SOS/VOD and multi-organ failure. Two had received >2 INO cycles (3 cycles, 5 cycles, N=1, each), all others ≤2 INO cycles prior to allo-HCT. Logistic regression analysis revealed conditioning with double alkylators (P=0.038) and allo-HCT during first-line therapy (P=0.050) as significant risk factors for SOS/VOD and in trend allo-HCT ≤60 days from last INO application (P=0.07), whereas number of INO cycles before allo-HCT and time between last INO application and allo-HCT were not significant. Relapse/progressive disease occurred in 20 (34%) patients. Of those, five (25%) patients are still alive, whereas 15 succumbed of their disease. Treatment with INO seems to be an effective approach with successful bridge-to-transplant. However, risk of SOS/VOD is high, necessitating continuous monitoring and recognition of SOS/VOD risk factors

Substructures in lens galaxies: PG1115+080 and B1555+375, two fold configurations

We study the anomalous flux ratio which is observed in some four-image lens systems, where the source lies close to a fold caustic. In this case two of the images are close to the critical curve and their flux ratio should be equal to unity, instead in several cases the observed value differs significantly. The most plausible solution is to invoke the presence of substructures, as for instance predicted by the Cold Dark Matter scenario, located near the two images. In particular, we analyze the two fold lens systems PG1115+080 and B1555+375, for which there are not yet satisfactory models which explain the observed anomalous flux ratios. We add to a smooth lens model, which reproduces well the positions of the images but not the anomalous fluxes, one or two substructures described as singular isothermal spheres. For PG1115+080 we consider a smooth model with the influence of the group of galaxies described by a SIS and a substructure with mass 105M\sim 10^{5} M_{\odot} as well as a smooth model with an external shear and one substructure with mass 108M\sim 10^{8} M_{\odot} . For B1555+375 either a strong external shear or two substructures with mass 107M\sim 10^{7} M_{\odot} reproduce the data quite well.Comment: 26 pages, updated bibliography, Accepted for publication in Astrophysics & Space Scienc
