Technology Assessment and Refinement through the Institution Village Linkage Programme (IVLP) is the latest participatory extension model successfully undertaken by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research in India. The Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute has been implementing IVLP since 2001 to assess and refine the technologies of the coastal agro ecosystems at Elamkunnapuzha village (Vypeen Island) in the Ernakulam District of Kerala. A series of need based location specific technology intervention plans have been introduced to overcome the social and biological constraints on farming practices in fisheries, livestock and agriculture, and implemented with the active participation of the stakeholders. The inferences drawn from IVLP ultimately form a package suitable for enhanced production in the costal agro ecosystem for replication to other areas with similar characteristics. This paper gives a brief account of the treatment packages applied in fisheries through various technological interventions and discusses the consequent yield and benefits obtained. The ‘integrated whole village development’ through the involvement of multi institutional teams and a participatory approach was accorded prime importance in the IVLP of Elamkunnapuzha, with a greater emphasis on marginal and small farmers and specifically focusing on women for poverty alleviation and equity under the coastal agro e

The reading interest of students goes with technological advancements. This qualitative study, employed phenomenology, aimed to identify the e-reading experiences of ESL learners as a form of pleasure reading. Key Informant Interview and Focus Group Discussion were carried out. Significant themes were identified through thematic analysis. Results showed that students viewed their e-reading experiences as a form of pleasure reading for relaxing and stress relieving. It is entertaining and entails lessons as well as it capacates them to have an understanding of emotions, improving their reading skills as well as enriching positive thinking. Conversely, comprehending reading texts, improving macro skills and grammatical skills, and learning new words are the improvements gained by the ESL learners. An instructional material was developed to cater the needs of the learners to become motivated to read and being the best version of themselves. E-reading increased the interest of the students to explore the wonders of reading. Indeed, they filled out the gaps in the reading process. Having the necessary skills led them to understand the texts which encouraged them to read more. It is indispensable on the part of the students to engage more into e-reading since they applied the situations in their own lives. They learned lessons as well as the competencies to confront the challenges that they are facing in life. E-reading integrated the skills which would be necessary for students to love reading and improve their communicative competence

Resultant from a constitutional provision, the National Water Resources Management System (Singreh), regulated by Law n.9.433 of 1997, considers the federative nature of Brazil. Besides that, the legislation brings new decentralization paradigms and use of economic tools for public management and participation in the decision-making process. The present essay, besides approaching issues of availability and demand of water resources in all 12 hydrographic regions of the country and the institutional design and functioning of Singreh in terms of legal and institutional arrangements, outlines the challenges of the water management in each hydrographic basin in the context of the federation. It also deals with the implementation process of technical and institutional tools of water resources in Paraíba do Sul River Basin - the first basin to implement water charges and operate a Water Agency in Brazil.

    Get PDF
Modeling flood inundation has become increasingly significant, especially for urban setting. Information on flood characteristics and accurate flow paths is significant for storm water management, hydrological modeling, hydrological data analysis, and vulnerability assessment. This paper employed geographic information system (GIS) to process the input data, RIDF curve to generate different design storm scenarios and PCSWMM to simulate the urban flooding of the Luinab catchment in Iligan City, Philippines. The results demonstrate the methodology for integrating GIS and flood model for analyzing the hydrological behavior of the catchment. The calibrated model clearly identified the area prone to flooding and predicts the influence of imperviousness on the hydrological behavior of the catchment. Improvement of the drainage system could be achieved by a) increasing the capacity of main canal and/or b) providing an additional outlet from identified areas that are prone to flooding

Background and Purpose: The prevalence of youth obesity has increased dramatically in the United States, becoming a severe concern in Hawai`i and disproportionally impacting Filipino youth. The main study objective was to describe the influence of parents and friends on adolescents’ dietary, physical activity, and sedentary behaviors. Methods: We collected quantitative and qualitative data from two classrooms in Hawai`i, from ethnic minority adolescents (N=42; 11th and 12th graders) and their parents (N=31). Participating adolescents were 86% female with a mean age of 16.5 + .6 years, and their parents were 77% female with a mean age of 45.9 + 6.9 years. The majority of participants described themselves as Filipino American. Self-report data were collected via adolescent surveys and follow-up group discussion, as well as individual adolescent-led parent interviews. Quantitative data were descriptive, and qualitative data were conceptualized into underlying themes based on the targeted health behavior and the source of influence (parents and friends). Results: The majority of students reported parents as the dominant influence on their dietary and sedentary behaviors; however, friends were reported as the principal influence on adolescents’ physical activity levels. Parents’ reported a strong dietary influence via home availability, but minimal influence on adolescents’ physical activity. Conclusion: Home food availability and reduced television time are prime targets for family-based interventions among ethnic minority Hawai`ian populations

A comprehensive CFD investigation of tip vortex trajectory in shrouded wind turbines using compressible RANS solver

    Get PDF
It is well known that a shroud placed around a wind turbine can increase its power coefficient, but it brings complex mechanisms by which the shroud alters the flow passing through the rotor. Such mechanisms impose numerical challenges, as the shrouded turbines present nonlinear behavior in the wake. This paper deals with a comprehensive analysis of tip vortex trajectory in shrouded wind turbines using Reynolds Averaged Navier–Stokes numerical solutions. The analysis includes aerodynamic performance and vortex characteristics of the whole wind turbine. The Multiple Reference Frame is used on a high-order unstructured compressible solver to study both, isolated and shrouded rotor. The NREL Phase VI Unsteady Aerodynamic Experiment rotor is used as a test case. The accuracy of results for wind speeds between 7 and 25 ms^-1 is discussed. Overall, good agreement is achieved between the computed pressure distributions and the experimental reference values. At stalled blade, more efforts are needed to improve numerical solutions, especially for integrated load quantities. The vortex structure is examined, showing that shroud impacts tip vortex trajectory by the increase of the axial induced velocity at the rotor plane. This result, demonstrates that the classical Prandtl tip loss is not accurate for shrouded turbine analysis, and modern finite blade functions are needed. The influence of the flow conditions on the tip vortex trajectory, flow separation and shroud interaction are also discussed.Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC

Mindfulness-based interventions for people diagnosed with a current episode of an anxiety or depressive disorder: a meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials

    Get PDF
Objective Mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs) can reduce risk of depressive relapse for people with a history of recurrent depression who are currently well. However, the cognitive, affective and motivational features of depression and anxiety might render MBIs ineffective for people experiencing current symptoms. This paper presents a meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials (RCTs) of MBIs where participants met diagnostic criteria for a current episode of an anxiety or depressive disorder. Method Post-intervention between-group Hedges g effect sizes were calculated using a random effects model. Moderator analyses of primary diagnosis, intervention type and control condition were conducted and publication bias was assessed. Results Twelve studies met inclusion criteria (n = 578). There were significant post-intervention between-group benefits of MBIs relative to control conditions on primary symptom severity (Hedges g = −0.59, 95% CI = −0.12 to −1.06). Effects were demonstrated for depressive symptom severity (Hedges g = −0.73, 95% CI = −0.09 to −1.36), but not for anxiety symptom severity (Hedges g = −0.55, 95% CI = 0.09 to −1.18), for RCTs with an inactive control (Hedges g = −1.03, 95% CI = −0.40 to −1.66), but not where there was an active control (Hedges g = 0.03, 95% CI = 0.54 to −0.48) and effects were found for MBCT (Hedges g = −0.39, 95% CI = −0.15 to −0.63) but not for MBSR (Hedges g = −0.75, 95% CI = 0.31 to −1.81). Conclusions This is the first meta-analysis of RCTs of MBIs where all studies included only participants who were diagnosed with a current episode of a depressive or anxiety disorder. Effects of MBIs on primary symptom severity were found for people with a current depressive disorder and it is recommended that MBIs might be considered as an intervention for this population
