Analysis of the State of Stresses and Plastic Strains during the Necking Process in Ductile Steels

    Get PDF
In steel, the knowledge beyond the yield strength elastic is of the utmost importance because of the large plastic strain that take place both at the time of the breakage and multiple conformation processes involving a stretch of material, such as rolling or extrusion. Beyond the manufacturing process, the trend nowadays is to the use of more ductile steels for concrete every time, that improve the behavior of structures due to loads limits such as those produced by seismic events. In this investigation, based on breakage testing tensile, we present a detailed analysis of the behavior of ductile steels, manufactured by hot rolling, defining plastic behavior of these laws to breaking, focusing primarily on the phenomenon of the formation of the neck

Growth performance, digestive enzyme activities, and oxidative stress markers in the proximal intestine of European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) fed high starch or lipid diets

The effect of different main dietary compositions on growth, anticipatory digestive enzyme activities, and oxidative status was studied in the proximal intestine of juvenile European sea bass. A control diet (C, 44% protein, 17.6% lipid, and 20% starch), three diets with increasing starch levels to test protein sparing (P36S36, P40S29, and P43S24), and two diets with high lipid content (L20S13 and L22S7) were tested. After 20 weeks, growth, digestive enzyme activities, lipid peroxidation, antioxidant enzyme activities, and G6PDH activity were measured after a 24-h fast. Sea bass fed P43S24 and L20S13 maintained an oxidative status like C fish, up-regulated CAT activity, and adjusted anticipatory protease activity. Instead, the lipid peroxidation increased in the L22S7 group, although CAT activity increased, whereas anticipatory total protease activity was downregulated. P40S29 also triggered LPO and CAT activity, but G6PDH levels diminished significantly. Moreover, an up-regulation in digestive enzyme activities was found. Finally, P36S36 fish showed less antioxidant enzyme activity and G6PDH, although their LPO tended to increase and their lipase and -amylase activities were upregulated. In conclusion, the inclusion of carbohydrates up to 24% or lipids up to 20% is possible for this species if protein requirements are met without negative effects on growth

Patterns of phylogeography and vicariance of Chamaerops humilis L. (Palmae)

    Get PDF
Chamaerops humilis L. is 1 of 2 native palms occurring in Europe and the only native palm in the West Mediterranean region. Our aims were: (1) to describe its phylogeographic structure; (2) to infer a biogeographic scenario to explain its present distribution; and (3) to assess changes in its distribution from the last interglacial period. Twenty-two populations were sampled. An amplified fragment length polymorphism analysis produced 226 fragments, which allowed recognition of 4 groups of populations: (1) E Iberian Peninsula plus Al Hoceima (NE Morocco), the Balearics, and Sardinia; (2) France, the Italian Peninsula, and Sicily; (3) SW Iberian Peninsula and NW Morocco; and (4) S Morocco (var. argentea André; the first 3 groups are currently included in var. humilis). The phylogenetic information and molecular clock-related estimates, combined with geological and fossil history from the Eocene to present, suggest that C. humilis occurred in Central Europe in the Tertiary, reaching (1) Spain and (2) Italy, with expansion from here across North Africa to (3) N Morocco and S Spain, and (4) S Morocco. Climatic changes may also help explain the fragmented current distribution of this species. The groups of populations are sufficiently genetically distinct to recommend conservation of at least some populations in each region.Ministerio de Educación y Ciencia de España CGL2005- 01951Secretaría General de Universidades, Investigación y Tecnología. Isotopic study of the influence of oxygen interaction and surface species over different catalysts on the soot removal mechanism

    Get PDF
In order to improve the catalytic formulations for soot removal in after-treatment emission control technologies for gasoline and diesel engine vehicle, an isotopic study was approached using transitory labeled oxygen response method over model catalysts that allows the unraveling of soot oxidation mechanism. Ce-based materials promote oxygen exchange associated with the high population of lattice oxygen species (O2-) denoted as OI type. The incorporation of praseodymium produces a Pr3+ enrichment that decrease the energy for oxygen release and increase oxygen mobility through surface and subsurface oxygen centers (OII type) depending on the synthesis procedure. For PtBaK catalyst, OIII species are responsible for oxygen exchange. Gas-solid reaction between soot and gas phase molecular oxygen is responsible for direct uncatalyzed soot oxidation. For ceria containing catalysts, low-temperature soot removal takes place through the intervention of lattice atomic species and superoxide species. For DPNR model catalyst, PtBaK/Al2O3, the soot elimination occurs with the intervention of OIII type centers. In the presence NO, the assisted and cooperative mechanism due to NO2 and the intervention of the adsorbed nitrate species on the trimetallic catalyst enhances soot removal capacity.MCR acknowledges the postdoctoral fellowship obtained from the University of Malaga. Ca-based bifunctional acid-basic model-catalysts for n-butanol production from ethanol condensation

Ethanol to n-butanol conversion is a process that can increase the carbon number of alcohols by coupling. There is increasing interest in the mechanisms for n-butanol production in a simple step through the effective use of bifunctional acid–base catalysts. In this context, commercial hydroxyapatite (HAP) and two synthetized model supported catalysts, Ca/Al2O3 and Ca-P/Al2O3, were used in bioethanol condensation. Characterization and acid–base sites were considered, and Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier-transform spectroscopy–mass spectrometry (DRIFT-MS) reactivity tests were performed in situ, as a first approximation to design a sustainable catalytic process rationally, and with the aim of understanding the process at the catalytic surface. The results indicated that the reactions occur at a large range of temperatures (200–450 °C). Hydroxyapatite and Ca/Al2O3 have similar basic sites (low and medium) and Ca-P/Al2O3 presented the strongest Brönsted and Lewis combined acid sites. Three major reactions were identified: non-oxidative dehydrogenation, aldol condensation, and intermolecular reduction, associated with the basic-acid sites Ca-O-Ca/Ca-O-P/ Ca-O-Al. Side reactions also occur involving different acid sites related to Lewis alumina centers favoring ethylene or diethyl-ether production
