The development of a prototype intelligent user interface subsystem for NASA's scientific database systems
The National Space Science Data Center (NSSDC) has initiated an Intelligent Data Management (IDM) research effort which has as one of its components the development of an Intelligent User Interface (IUI).The intent of the latter is to develop a friendly and intelligent user interface service that is based on expert systems and natural language processing technologies. The purpose is to support the large number of potential scientific and engineering users presently having need of space and land related research and technical data but who have little or no experience in query languages or understanding of the information content or architecture of the databases involved. This technical memorandum presents prototype Intelligent User Interface Subsystem (IUIS) using the Crustal Dynamics Project Database as a test bed for the implementation of the CRUDDES (Crustal Dynamics Expert System). The knowledge base has more than 200 rules and represents a single application view and the architectural view. Operational performance using CRUDDES has allowed nondatabase users to obtain useful information from the database previously accessible only to an expert database user or the database designer

Supersymmetric version of a Gaussian irrotational compressible fluid flow
The Lie point symmetries and corresponding invariant solutions are obtained
for a Gaussian, irrotational, compressible fluid flow. A supersymmetric
extension of this model is then formulated through the use of a superspace and
superfield formalism. The Lie superalgebra of this extended model is determined
and a classification of its subalgebras is performed. The method of symmetry
reduction is systematically applied in order to derive special classes of
invariant solutions of the supersymmetric model. Several new types of
algebraic, hyperbolic, multi-solitonic and doubly periodic solutions are

Interference with the Mate-Finding Communication System of the Obliquebanded Leafroller (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae) Using Synthetic Sex Pheromones
Effect of atmospheric permeation with synthetic sex pheromone on the behavior and control of obliquebanded leafroller, Choristoneura rosaceana (Harris), was studied in small and large plots in commercial apple orchards. Synthetic sex pheromone significantly reduced the ability of male moths to locate pheromone-baited traps and tethered females; however, no differences were found among 3 pheromone rates. Location of pheromone dispensers within the tree canopy did not alter the number of males locating pheromone-baited traps and mating tethered females. Obliquebanded leafroller activity was greatest in the upper positions of the tree canopy and no edge effect was observed around perimeters of large disrupted blocks. The presence of gravid feral females, mated tethered females, high larval densities, and fruit damage within large pheromone disrupted blocks indicate obliqubanded leafrollers mate in orchards treated with synthetic sex pheromone. However, fruit damage caused by obliquebanded leafroller larvae was similar in pheromone, pheromone plus insecticide, and insecticide treatment
Expression and Temperature-Dependent Regulation of the Beta2-Microglobulin (Cyca-B2m) Gene in a Cold-Blooded Vertebrate, the Common Carp (Cyprinus carpio L.)
Expression of beta2-microglobulin (β
2m) in the common carp was studied using a polyclonal antibody raised against a recombinant protein obtained from eukaryotic expression of the Cyca-B2m gene. β
2m is expressed on peripheral blood Ig+ and Ig- lymphocytes, but not on
erythrocytes and thrombocytes. In spleen and pronephros, dull- and bright-positive populations
could be identified correlating with the presence of erythrocytes, thrombocytes, and mature
leucocytes or immature and mature cells from the lympho-myeloid lineage, respectively.
Thymocytes were shown to be comprised of a single bright-positive population. The Cyca-B2m
polyclonal antiserum was used in conjunction with a similarly produced polyclonal antiserum to
an MHC class I (Cyca-UA) α chain to investigate the expression of class I molecules on
peripheral blood leucocytes (PBL) at different permissive temperatures. At 12℃, a temporary
downregulation of class I molecules was demonstrated, which recovered to normal levels within
3 days. However, at 6℃, a lasting absence of class I cell-surface expression was observed, which
could be restored slowly by transfer to 12C. The expression of immunoglobulin molecules on
B cells was unaffected by temperature changes. The absence of the class cell-surface expression
was shown to be the result of a lack of sufficient Cyca-B2m gene transcription, although Cyca-UA mRNA was present at comparable levels at all temperatures. This suggests that class I
expression is regulated by a temperature-sensitive transcription of the Cyca-B2m gene
The expanding bipolar shell of the helium nova V445 Puppis
From multi-epoch adaptive optics imaging and integral field unit spectroscopy, we report the discovery of an expanding and narrowly confined bipolar shell surrounding the helium nova V445 Puppis (Nova Puppis 2000). An equatorial dust disc obscures the nova remnant, and the outflow is characterized by a large polar outflow velocity of 6720 +/- 650 km s(-1) and knots moving at even larger velocities of 8450 +/- 570 km s(-1). We derive an expansion parallax distance of 8.2 +/- 0.5 kpc and deduce a pre-outburst luminosity of the underlying binary of log L/L-circle dot = 4.34 +/- 0.36. The derived luminosity suggests that V445 Puppis probably contains a massive white dwarf accreting at high rate from a helium star companion making it part of a population of binary stars that potentially lead to supernova Ia explosions due to accumulation of helium-rich material on the surface of a massive white dwarf
Identification of 13 DB + dM and 2 DC + dM binaries from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey
We present the identification of 13 DB + dM binaries and 2 DC + dM binaries
from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). Before the SDSS only 2 DB + dM
binaries and 1 DC + dM binary were known. At least three, possibly 8, of the
new DB + dM binaries seem to have white dwarf temperatures well above 30000 K
which would place them in the so called DB-gap. Finding these DB white dwarfs
in binaries may suggest that they have formed through a different evolutionary
channel than the ones in which DA white dwarfs transform into DB white dwarfs

Allelic losses in carcinoma in situ and testicular germ cell tumours of adolescents and adults: evidence suggestive of the linear progression model
Testicular germ cell tumours (TGCTs) may arise through a process of multi-step carcinogenesis, and loss of heterozygosity (LOH) at specific loci is likely to be an important early event, although this has not been studied in detail. In order to explore the pathogenetic relationships among TGCTs, we investigated the genetic changes in testicular tumours that exhibit a disease continuum through the precursor carcinoma in situ (CIS) to either seminoma (SE) and/or non-seminomatous germ cell tumour (NSGCT). Universal amplification has been performed on 87 TGCT specimens and 36 samples of CIS cells microdissected from single paraffin-embedded tumour sections from 40 patients, including multiple specimens of CIS and TGCT cells of varied histology microdissected from 24 individual patients. Seventy-seven microsatellite markers were used to assay these samples for LOH at candidate regions selected from the literature, mapping to 3q, 5q, 9p, 11p, 11q, 12q, 17p and 18q. Construction of deletion maps for each of these regions identified common sites of deletion at 3q27–q28, 5q31, 5q34–q35, 9p22–p21 and 12q22, which correlate with allelic losses we have also observed in the precursor CIS cells. Evidence for allelic loss at 3q27–q28 was observed in all of the embryonal carcinoma samples analysed. We conclude that inactivation of gene(s) within these regions are likely to be early events in the development and progression of TGCTs. These results also provide molecular evidence in support of the hypothesis that SE is an intermediate stage of development within a single neoplastic pathway of progression from CIS precursor cells to NSGCT. © 2000 Cancer Research Campaig
Evidence of systematic errors in SCIAMACHY-observed CO2 due to aerosols
International audienceSCIAMACHY CO2 measurements show a large variability in total column CO2 over the Sahara desert of up to 10%, which is not anticipated from in situ measurements and cannot be explained by results of atmospheric models. Comparisons with colocated aerosol measurements by TOMS and MISR over the Sahara indicate that the seasonal variation of SCIAMACHY-observed CO2 strongly resembles seasonal variations of windblown dust. Correlation coefficients of monthly datasets of colocated MISR aerosol optical depth and SCIAMACHY CO2 vary between 0.6 and 0.8, indicating that about half of the CO2 variance is explained by aerosol optical depth. Radiative transfer model calculations confirm the role of dust and can explain the size of the errors. Sensitivity tests suggest that the remaining variance may largely be explained by variations in the vertical distribution of dust. Further calculations for a few typical aerosol classes and a broad range of atmospheric conditions show that the impact of aerosols on SCIAMACHY retrieved CO2 is by far the largest over the Sahara, but may also reach significant levels elsewhere. Over the continents, aerosols lead mostly to overestimated CO2 columns with the exception of biomass burning plumes and dark coniferous forests. Inverse modelling calculations confirm that aerosol correction of SCIAMACHY CO2 measurements is needed to derive meaningful source and sink estimates. Methods for correcting aerosol-induced errors exist, but so far mainly on the basis of theoretical considerations.
