High-resolution Observations of OH(1720 MHz) Masers Toward the Galactic Center
High-resolution VLA observations of 1720 MHz OH maser emission from Sgr A
East and the circumnuclear disk with spatial and spectral resolutions of
2\dasec5 1\dasec3 and 0.27 \kms are reported. This follow-up
observational study focuses on the recent discovery of a number of such OH
maser features and their intense circularly polarized maser lines detected
toward these Galactic center sources. The 1720 MHz maser line of OH arises from
collisionally excited gas behind a C-type shock and is an important diagnostic
of the interaction process that may occur between molecular clouds and
associated X-ray emitting shell-type supernova remnants. The present
observations have confirmed that the observed Stokes signal is due to
Zeeman splitting and that the OH masers are angularly broadened by the
scattering medium toward the Galactic center. The scale length of the magnetic
field fluctuations in the scattering medium toward the Galactic center is
estimated to be greater than 0.1-0.2 pc using the correlation of the position
angles of the scatter-broadened maser spots. In addition, the kinematics of the
maser spots associated with Sgr A East are used to place a 5 pc displacement

Gauge Field Back-reaction on a Black Hole
The order fluctuations of gauge fields in the vicinity of a blackhole
can create a repulsive antigravity region extending out beyond the renormalized
Schwarzschild horizon. If the strength of this repulsive force increases as
higher orders in the back-reaction are included, the formation of a

Discovery of a z=4.93, X-ray selected quasar by the Chandra Multiwavelength Project (ChamP)
We present X-ray and optical observations of CXOMP J213945.0-234655, a high
redshift (z=4.93) quasar discovered through the Chandra Multiwavelength Project
(ChaMP). This object is the most distant X-ray selected quasar published, with
an X-ray luminosity of L(X)=5.9x10^44 erg/s (measured in the 0.3-2.5 keV band
and corrected for Galactic absorption). CXOMP J213945.0-234655 is a g' dropout
object (>26.2), with r'=22.87 and i'=21.36. The rest-frame X-ray to optical
flux ratio is similar to quasars at lower redshifts and slightly X-ray bright
relative to z>4 optically-selected quasars observed with Chandra. The ChaMP is
beginning to acquire significant numbers of high redshift quasars to

Reduced neural activity of the prefrontal cognitive control circuitry during response inhibition to negative words in people with schizophrenia
BACKGROUND: Schizophrenia is characterized by deficits in executive control and impairments in emotion processing. This study assessed the nature and extent of potential alterations in the neural substrates supporting the interaction between cognitive control mechanisms and emotion attribution processes in people with schizophrenia. METHODS: Functional magnetic resonance imaging was performed during a verbal emotional go/no-go task. People with schizophrenia and healthy controls responded to word stimuli of a prespecified emotional valence (positive, negative or neutral) while inhibiting responses to stimuli of a different valence. RESULTS: We enrolled 20 people with schizophrenia and 23 controls in the study. Healthy controls activated an extensive dorsal prefrontal–parietal network while inhibiting responses to negative words compared to neutral words, but showed deactivation of the midcingulate cortex while inhibiting responses to positive words compared to neutral words. People with schizophrenia failed to activate this network during response inhibition to negative words, whereas during response inhibition to positive words they did not deactivate the cingulate, but showed increased responsivity in the frontal cortex. LIMITATIONS: Sample heterogeneity is characteristic of studies of schizophrenia and may have contributed to more variable neural responses in the patient sample despite the care taken to control for potentially confounding variables. CONCLUSION: Our results showed that schizophrenia is associated with aberrant modulation of neural responses during the interaction between cognitive control and emotion processing. Failure of the frontal circuitry to regulate goal-directed behaviour based on emotion attributions may contribute to deficits in psychosocial functioning in daily life
Biology and ecology of the invasive lionfishes, Pterois miles and Pterois volitans
The Indo-Pacific lionfishes, Pterois miles and P. volitans, are now established along the U.S. southeast coast, Bermuda, Bahamas, and are becoming established in the Caribbean. While these lionfish are popular in the aquarium trade, their biology and ecology are poorly understood in their native range. Given the rapid establishment and potential adverse impacts of these invaders, comprehensive studies of their biology and ecology are warranted. Here we provide a synopsis of lionfish biology and ecology including invasion chronology, taxonomy, local abundance, reproduction, early life history and dispersal, venomology, feeding ecology, parasitology, potential impacts, and control and management. This information was collected through review of the primary literature and published reports and by summarizing current observations. Suggestions for future research on invasive lionfish in their invaded regions are provided
Mid-infrared spectra of PAH emission in Herbig AeBe stars
We present spectra of four Herbig AeBe stars obtained with the Infrared
Spectrograph (IRS). on the Spitzer Space Telescope. All four of the sources
show strong emission from polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), with the 6.2
um emission feature shifted to 6.3 um and the strongest C-C skeletal-mode
feature occuring at 7.9 um instead of at 7.7 um as is often seen. Remarkably,
none of the four stars have silicate emission. The strength of the 7.9 um
feature varies with respect to the 11.3 um feature among the sources,
indicating that we have observed PAHs with a range of ionization fractions. The
ionization fraction is higher for systems with hotter and brighter central
stars. Two sources, HD 34282 and HD 169142, show emission features from
aliphatic hydrocarbons at 6.85 and 7.25 um. The spectrum of HD 141569 shows a
previously undetected emission feature at 12.4 um which may be related to the
12.7 um PAH feature. The spectrum of HD 135344, the coolest star in our sample,
shows an unusual profile in the 7-9 um region, with the peak emission to the

Towards a framework for critical citizenship education
Increasingly countries around the world are promoting forms of "critical" citizenship in the planned curricula of schools. However, the intended meaning behind this term varies markedly and can range from a set of creative and technical skills under the label "critical thinking" to a desire to encourage engagement, action and political emancipation, often labelled "critical pedagogy". This paper distinguishes these manifestations of the "critical" and, based on an analysis of the prevailing models of critical pedagogy and citizenship education, develops a conceptual framework for analysing and comparing the nature of critical citizenship

The aim of this paper is to explore the relationship between HRQoL and PA, and examine how this relationship differs across objective and subjective measures of PA, within the context of a large representative national survey from England. METHODS: Using a sample of 5,537 adults (40–60 years) from a representative national survey in England (Health Survey for England 2008), Tobit regressions with upper censoring was employed to model the association between HRQoL and objective, and subjective measures of PA controlling for potential confounders. We tested the robustness of this relationship across specific types of PA. HRQoL was assessed using the summary measure of health state utility value derived from the EuroQol-5 Dimensions (EQ-5D) whilst PA was assessed via subjective measure (questionnaire) and objective measure (accelerometer- actigraph model GT1M). The actigraph was worn (at the waist) for 7 days (during waking hours) by a randomly selected sub-sample of the HSE 2008 respondents (4,507 adults – 16 plus years), with a valid day constituting 10 hours. Analysis was conducted in 2010. RESULTS: Findings suggest that higher levels of PA are associated with better HRQoL (regression coefficient: 0.026 to 0.072). This relationship is consistent across different measures and types of PA although differences in the magnitude of HRQoL benefit associated with objective and subjective (regression coefficient: 0.047) measures of PA are noticeable, with the former measure being associated with a relatively better HRQoL (regression coefficient: 0.072). CONCLUSION: Higher levels of PA are associated with better HRQoL. Using an objective measure of PA compared with subjective shows a relatively better HRQoL.This project was funded by the NIHR Health Technology Assessment programme (project number 08/72/01)
Genome-wide linkage analysis of 972 bipolar pedigrees using single-nucleotide polymorphisms.
Because of the high costs associated with ascertainment of families, most linkage studies of Bipolar I disorder (BPI) have used relatively small samples. Moreover, the genetic information content reported in most studies has been less than 0.6. Although microsatellite markers spaced every 10 cM typically extract most of the genetic information content for larger multiplex families, they can be less informative for smaller pedigrees especially for affected sib pair kindreds. For these reasons we collaborated to pool family resources and carried out higher density genotyping. Approximately 1100 pedigrees of European ancestry were initially selected for study and were genotyped by the Center for Inherited Disease Research using the Illumina Linkage Panel 12 set of 6090 single-nucleotide polymorphisms. Of the ~1100 families, 972 were informative for further analyses, and mean information content was 0.86 after pruning for linkage disequilibrium. The 972 kindreds include 2284 cases of BPI disorder, 498 individuals with bipolar II disorder (BPII) and 702 subjects with recurrent major depression. Three affection status models (ASMs) were considered: ASM1 (BPI and schizoaffective disorder, BP cases (SABP) only), ASM2 (ASM1 cases plus BPII) and ASM3 (ASM2 cases plus recurrent major depression). Both parametric and non-parametric linkage methods were carried out. The strongest findings occurred at 6q21 (non-parametric pairs LOD 3.4 for rs1046943 at 119 cM) and 9q21 (non-parametric pairs logarithm of odds (LOD) 3.4 for rs722642 at 78 cM) using only BPI and schizoaffective (SA), BP cases. Both results met genome-wide significant criteria, although neither was significant after correction for multiple analyses. We also inspected parametric scores for the larger multiplex families to identify possible rare susceptibility loci. In this analysis, we observed 59 parametric LODs of 2 or greater, many of which are likely to be close to maximum possible scores. Although some linkage findings may be false positives, the results could help prioritize the search for rare variants using whole exome or genome sequencing
The Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative 3: Continued innovation for clinical trial improvement
INTRODUCTION:
The overall goal of the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI) is to validate biomarkers for Alzheimer's disease (AD) clinical trials. ADNI-3, which began on August 1, 2016, is a 5-year renewal of the current ADNI-2 study.
METHODS:
ADNI-3 will follow current and additional subjects with normal cognition, mild cognitive impairment, and AD using innovative technologies such as tau imaging, magnetic resonance imaging sequences for connectivity analyses, and a highly automated immunoassay platform and mass spectroscopy approach for cerebrospinal fluid biomarker analysis. A Systems Biology/pathway approach will be used to identify genetic factors for subject selection/enrichment. Amyloid positron emission tomography scanning will be standardized using the Centiloid method. The Brain Health Registry will help recruit subjects and monitor subject cognition.
RESULTS:
Multimodal analyses will provide insight into AD pathophysiology and disease progression.
DISCUSSION:
ADNI-3 will aim to inform AD treatment trials and facilitate development of AD disease-modifying treatments
