Comparative analysis on temperature swing adsorption cycle for carbon capture by using internal heat/mass recovery

    Get PDF
Due to relatively high energy consumption of absorption technology, adsorption carbon dioxide capture is gathering the momentum in recent years. This paper aims to further improve the thermal performance of a 4-step temperature swing adsorption cycle by integrating internal mass recovery and heat recovery. Exergy efficiency is evaluated by using adsorption characteristics of activated carbon and compared in terms of four different situations i.e. basic cycle, heat recovery cycle, mass recovery cycle, heat and mass recovery cycle, which could illustrate the advantages and disadvantages of different recovery technologies. Results demonstrate that heat recovery and mass recovery technologies are quite conducive to improve the up limit of cycle thermal efficiency. Under the conditions of different desorption/adsorption temperatures and pressures, exergy efficiencies using recovery technologies could be improved by up to 2.86 times when compared with that of basic cycle. Besides, in real application unused percentage of adsorption reactor and metal ratio have large influence on the cycle performance while mass recovery rate has a relatively small influence. One potential application of the proposed recovery technologies is direct air capture in building ventilation system since a largest improvement could be achieved at a low carbon dioxide concentration

The adolescence appears as an essential period regarding the formulation of goals development. Those are inherent in order to determine and regulate the individual''s conduct and lifestyle. The current study attempts to elaborate teen profiles depending on the option they chose to get the different goals. The sample is formed by1210 participants, 618 males (51.1 %) and 592 women (48.9 %), with an average age of 15, 13 years old (+/- 1.88) since Compulsory Secondary Education until high school. Goals Questionnaire for Adolescents and a selection of items from the study Health Behaviour in School-aged Children were administered. The results signal the existence of four different profiles with specific characteristics regarding their goal orientation. They are included in the same sedentary level expressed in physical stagnation and high consumption of audiovisual technology. Knowing the existence of these different profiles and their peculiarities we could better understand some teen behaviors

It has been tested with the Simple English Wikipedia and WordNet, although it can be used with other resources. The accuracy in disambiguating the sense of the encyclopedia entries reaches 91.11% (83.89% for polysemous words). It will be applied to enriching ontologies with encyclopedic knowledge

Feasibility of Electrified Propulsion for Ultra-Efficient Commercial Aircraft Final Report

    Get PDF
MIT, Aurora Flight Sciences, and USC have collaborated to assess the feasibility of electric, hybridelectric, and turbo-electric propulsion for ultra-efficient commercial transportation. The work has drawn on the team expertise in disciplines related to aircraft design, propulsion-airframe integration, electric machines and systems, engineering system design, and optimization. A parametric trade space analysis has been carried out to assess vehicle performance across a range of transport missions and propulsion architectures to establish how electrified propulsion systems scale. An optimization approach to vehicle conceptual design modeling was taken to enable rapid multidisciplinary design space exploration and sensitivity analysis. The results of the analysis indicate vehicle aero-propulsive integration benefits enabled by electrification are required to offset the increased weight and loss associated with the electric system and achieve enhanced performance; the report describes the conceptual configurations than can offer such enhancements. The main contribution of the present work is the definition of electric vehicle design attributes for potential efficiency improvements at different scales. Based on these results, key areas for future research are identified, and extensions to the trade space analysis suitable for higher fidelity electrified commercial aircraft design and analysis have been developed

LZS/Al2O3 nanostructured composites obtained by colloidal processing and spark plasma sintering

[EN] Li2O-SiO2-ZrO2 (LZS) glass-ceramics have high mechanical strength, hardness, resistance to abrasion and chemical attack, but also a high coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE), which can be reduced adding alumina nanoparticles. The conventional glass-ceramic production is relatively complex and energy consuming, since it requires the melting of the raw materials to form a glass frit and a two-step milling process to obtain particle sizes adequate for compaction. This study describes the preparation of LZS glass-ceramics through a colloidal processing approach from mixtures of SiO2 and ZrO2 nanopowders and a Li precursor (lithium acetate obtained by reaction of the carbonate with acetic acid). Concentrated suspensions were freeze-dried to obtain homogeneous mixtures of powders that were pressed (100 MPa) and sintered conventionally and by spark plasma sintering. The effect of the alumina nanoparticles additions on suspensions rheology, sintering behavior and properties such as thermal expansion, thermal conductivity, hardness and Young's modulus were evaluated. Superfield theory and supermatrix model

We study the noncommutative superspace of arbitrary dimensions in a systematic way. Superfield theories on a noncommutative superspace can be formulated in two folds, through the star product formalism and in terms of the supermatrices. We elaborate the duality between them by constructing the isomorphism explicitly and relating the superspace integrations of the star product Lagrangian or the superpotential to the traces of the supermatrices. We show there exists an interesting fine tuned commutative limit where the duality can be still maintained. Namely on the commutative superspace too, there exists a supermatrix model description for the superfield theory. We interpret the result in the context of the wave particle duality. The dual particles for the superfields in even and odd spacetime dimensions are D-instantons and D0-branes respectively to be consistent with the T-duality.Comment: 1+16 pages, no figure; expanded version, references added; Convention for Clifford algebra improve

Possible symmetries of the superconducting order parameter in a hexagonal ferromagnet

We study the order parameter symmetry in a hexagonal crystal with co-existing superconductivity and ferromagnetism. An experimental example is provided by carbon-based materials, such as graphite-sulfur composites, in which an evidence of such co-existence has been recently discovered. The presence of a non-zero magnetization in the normal phase brings about considerable changes in the symmetry classification of superconducting states, compared to the non-magnetic case.Comment: 4 pages, REVTe

Prospects for observations of high-energy cosmic tau neutrinos

We study prospects for the observations of high-energy cosmic tau neutrinos (E \geq 10^6 GeV) originating from proton acceleration in the cores of active galactic nuclei. We consider the possibility that vacuum flavor neutrino oscillations induce a tau to muon neutrino flux ratio greatly exceeding the rather small value expected from intrinsic production. The criterias and event rates for under water/ice light Cerenkov neutrino telescopes are given by considering the possible detection of downgoing high-energy cosmic tau neutrinos through characteristic double shower events.Comment: 10 pages, Revtex, 3 figures included with eps

Cognitive impairment among World Trade Center responders: Long-term implications of re-experiencing the 9/11 terrorist attacks

    Get PDF
AbstractIntroductionDuring the World Trade Center (WTC) attacks, responders who helped in search, rescue, and recovery endured multiple traumatic and toxic exposures. One-fifth subsequently developed post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). PTSD has been linked to dementia in veterans. This study examined the association between WTC-related PTSD and cognitive impairment (CI) in WTC responders.MethodsA one-third sample of responders (N = 818) reporting for annual monitoring visits were screened for cognitive impairment and dementia using the Montreal Cognitive Assessment from January 2014–April 2015. Concurrent diagnoses of PTSD and major depressive disorder (MDD), as well as serial PTSD and depressive symptom inventories, collected since 2002, were examined in relation to current CI.ResultsApproximately 12.8% and 1.2% of responders in this sample respectively had scores indicative of CI and possible dementia. Current PTSD and MDD were associated with CI. Longitudinal results revealed that re-experiencing symptoms were consistently associated with CI (aRR = 2.88, 95% confidence interval = 1.35–6.22), whereas longitudinal increases in other PTSD and depressive symptoms in the years before screening were evident only among those with CI.ConclusionsAnalyses replicated results from Veterans studies and further highlighted the importance of re-experiencing symptoms, a major component of PTSD that was consistently predictive of CI 14 years later. Clinicians should monitor CI when treating individuals with chronic PTSD
