Global attractors for the coupled suspension bridge system with temperature
This paper deals with the longterm properties of the thermoelastic nonlinear string-beam system related to the well-known Lazer-McKenna suspension bridge model.

Ambulatory blood pressure monitoring during pregnancy: an Italian experience
Objective: To describe the impact of a collaborative Italian diagnostic pathway offering ambulatory blood pressure (BP) monitoring (ABPM) in High Risk Antenatal Clinic (HRAC) pregnant women. The study included 395 pregnant women evaluated at HRAC between 2012 and 2016, while analyzing demographic, clinical characteristics, and prescription of ABPM. Pregnant women were firstly seen when gestational age was 19.6 +/- 9.6 weeks. In at least one-third of cases, ABPM was followed by medical intervention aiming to modify the preexisting therapeutic treatment. Hypertension and overweight were the main reasons for performing ABPM. WCH: white-coat hypertension
Synergistic icephobic behaviour of swollen nitrile butadiene rubber graphene and/or carbon nanotube composites
Spontaneous change of adhesion of solidifying liquid on surfaces is of significant importance in materials technology where it finds applications such as anti-icing components operating in extreme environments like those of seals. In this work, nitrile butadiene rubber (NBR) composites reinforced with graphene, carbon nanotubes, and a mix of them after immersion in several fluids, experienced both a swelling and a reduction of the cross-link density that reduces ice adhesion, being this effect more evident for graphene containing samples. These results have been rationalized via a first principles atomistic modellization of interfaces formed by ice water of increasing thickness and graphene and scaling laws from fracture mechanics, revealing a clear synergy between swelling and nanocarbon phase in the icephobic nature of the composite, dictated by a competition between elastic modulus and adsorption energy. Decision to take osteoporosis medication in patients who have had a fracture and are 'high' risk for future fracture: A qualitative study
Abstract
Background
Patients' values and preferences are fundamental tenets of evidence-based practice, yet current osteoporosis (OP) clinical guidelines pay little attention to these issues in therapeutic decision making. This may be in part due to the fact that few studies have examined the factors that influence the initial decision to take OP medication. The purpose of our study was to examine patients' experiences with the decision to take OP medication after they sustained a fracture.
Methods
A phenomenological qualitative study was conducted with outpatients identified in a university teaching hospital fracture clinic OP program. Individuals aged 65+ who had sustained a fragility fracture within 5 years, were 'high risk' for future fracture, and were prescribed OP medication were eligible. Analysis of interview data was guided by Giorgi's methodology.
Results
21 patients (6 males, 15 females) aged 65-88 years participated. All participants had low bone mass; 9 had OP. Fourteen patients were taking a bisphosphonate while 7 patients were taking no OP medications. For 12 participants, the decision to take OP medication occurred at the time of prescription and involved minimal contemplation (10/12 were on medication). These patients made their decision because they liked/trusted their health care provider. However, 4/10 participants in this group indicated their OP medication-taking status might change. For the remaining 9 patients, the decision was more difficult (4/9 were on medication). These patients were unconvinced by their health care provider, engaged in risk-benefit analyses using other information sources, and were concerned about side effects; 7/9 patients indicated that their OP medication-taking status might change at a later date.
Conclusions
Almost half of our older patients who had sustained a fracture found the decision to take OP medication a difficult one. In general, the decision was not considered permanent. Health care providers should be aware of their potential role in patients' decisions and monitor patients' decisions over time
The versatility of mitochondrial calcium signals: From stimulation of cell metabolism to induction of cell death
AbstractBoth the contribution of mitochondria to intracellular calcium (Ca2+) signalling and the role of mitochondrial Ca2+ uptake in shaping the cytoplasmic response and controlling mitochondrial function are areas of intense investigation. These studies rely on the appropriate use of emerging techniques coupled with judicious data interpretation to a large extent. The development of targeted probes based on the molecular engineering of luminescent proteins has allowed the specific measurement of Ca2+ concentration ([Ca2+]) and adenosine trisphosphate concentration ([ATP]) in intracellular organelles or cytoplasmic subdomains. This approach has given novel information on different aspects of mitochondrial homeostasis
Exact exchange-correlation potential of a ionic Hubbard model with a free surface
We use Lanczos exact diagonalization to compute the exact
exchange-correlation (xc) potential of a Hubbard chain with large binding
energy ("the bulk") followed by a chain with zero binding energy ("the
vacuum"). Several results of density functional theory in the continuum
(sometimes controversial) are verified in the lattice. In particular we show
explicitly that the fundamental gap is given by the gap in the Kohn-Sham
spectrum plus a contribution due to the jump of the xc-potential when a
particle is added. The presence of a staggered potential and a nearest-neighbor
interaction V allows to simulate a ionic solid. We show that in the ionic
regime in the small hopping amplitude limit the xc-contribution to the gap
equals V, while in the Mott regime it is determined by the Hubbard U
interaction. In addition we show that correlations generates a new potential
barrier at the surface
A reflective journal as learning process and contribution to quality and validity in interpretative phenomenological analysis
Using selected, contemporaneous illustrations from the reflective journal of a doctoral student undertaking data analysis for the first time, this article examines the relationship between journaling as a learning process when undertaking computer-assisted qualitative data analysis and establishing quality and validity in interpretative phenomenological analysis. The writing of the journal is shown both to enact some potential validity criteria (e.g. in producing an audit trail) whilst also recording and reflectively prompting the process of learning, interpretation and bracketing, thus evidencing transparency. By using a journal inside the software package and alongside the stages of the interpretative phenomenological analysis, analysis within the software package, it is argued that quality and validity become dynamic, not static constructs. These constructs are intimately linked to the researcher-learning-process and permit a critical stance to be taken
