Do newspapers matter? Short-run and long-run evidence from the closure of The Cincinnati Post

The Cincinnati Post published its last edition on New Year’s Eve 2007, leaving the Cincinnati Enquirer as the only daily newspaper in the market. The next year, fewer candidates ran for municipal office in the Kentucky suburbs most reliant on the Post, incumbents became more likely to win reelection, and voter turnout and campaign spending fell. These changes happened even though the Enquirer at least temporarily increased its coverage of the Post’s former strongholds. Voter turnout remained depressed through 2010, nearly three years after the Post closed, but the other effects diminished with time. We exploit a difference-in-differences strategy and the fact that the Post’s closing date was fixed 30 years in advance to rule out some non-causal explanations for our results. Although our findings are statistically imprecise, they demonstrate that newspapers—even underdogs such as the Post, which had a circulation of just 27,000 when it closed—can have a substantial and measurable impact on public life.

L'equip reflexiu com a instrument terapèutic en els contextos de violència familiar

En la comprensió i la producció del llenguatge intervenen processos automatics i processos controlats. La diferència entre uns i altres està determinada pel grau d'implicació del sistema cognitiu en el processament el qual es pot inferir, en certa mesura, examinant el nivell de consciència i voluntarietat presents en realitzar una tasca. L'objectiu d'aquest article ha estat definir aquests processos i posar-los en relació amb un marc teòric de referència. L'automatisme s'explica a partir de la hipòtesi de la modularitat, mentre que els processos controlats, per la seva estreta relació amb el sistema cognitiu, són interpretats des de diferents marcs teòrics que abasten des de la perspectiva pragmàtica a la teoria de la ment.El presente trabajo trata de sintetizar las aportaciones del uso del Equipo reflexivo y justificar su utilización en casos de violencia familiar. Este instrumento permite, fundamentalmente, realizar una psicoterapia basada en el respeto y la creatividad, a la vez que protege la figura del terapeuta, caracteristicas todas ellas esenciales del contexto terapéutico en casos de violencia familiar.This work aims at summarising the contributions of using the Reflective Team and at justifying its use in cases of domestic violence. This instrument allows us to carry out psychotherapy particularly based on respect and creativity, and at the same time it protects the figure of the psychotherapist. These characteristics are essential of the therapeutic context in cases of domestic violence

Estudio justificativo para el reconocimiento de la Denominación de Origen Protegida (D.O.P.) : "Miel Montaña Palentina - Las Loras"

La miel constituye un alimento tradicional, asociado a un medio geográfico concreto cuya producción puede estar amparada por alguna de las figuras de calidad recogidas en el Reglamento (CE) 1151/2012. El procedimiento de solicitud de registro de una denominación de origen (DOP) exige la presentación de un estudio justificativo que vincule las características de un producto alimenticio con una zona geográfica definida. El objetivo de este trabajo es aportar la información necesaria para poder solicitar el reconocimiento como DOP de la miel producida en las comarcas Montaña Palentina y Las Loras de Burgos. Los municipios ubicados en la zona geográfica de producción de la futura DOP están históricamente vinculados con la actividad apícola, y presentan unas características medioambientales diferenciadas que determinan el desarrollo de especies botánicas concretas y endémicas. El desarrollo de esta vegetación en zonas de elevada altitud determina la obtención de una miel con unas cualidades singulares, justificando la solicitud de la mencionada figura de calidad. La realización de una prospectiva específica entre las mieles obtenidas en estas comarcas, complementaría los resultados obtenidos en el trabajo, cumpliendo con los requisitos necesarios para demostrar el vínculo entre producto y entorno geográficoHoney is a traditional foodstuff related to a specific geographical area, the production of which may be regulated by means of some of the quality schemes for agricultural products and foodstuffs enacted by the Regulation (CE) 1151/2012. The procedure to request a Protected Designation of Origin (PSO) requires the submission of a study aiming to show the link between the features of the product and its geographical origin. The goal of this study is to provide the necessary information in order to be able to request a PSO recognition for the honey produced in the regions of Montaña Palentina and Loras de Burgos. The municipalities located in the geographical production area that will apply for the future PSO recognition are historically linked to the apiarian activities. Moreover, they show specific environmental features that determine the development of particular and endemic botanic species. The development of this vegetation in high altitude areas determines the collection of a honey with very specific attributes. This fact justifies the request for a quality schemes. Examen crítico de la relación entre empleo y educación en el contexto de la globalización.

The globalization with its man reduction to the dimension of an "economic man" have intensified the poverty, the unemployment and the precarious employment, which, in our industrial society, means the threshold of the poverty. These are, among others, the main signs of the current pattern of economic development that is focused in the market logic. Therefore, the workers have been reduced to "merchandise-men" and, if their rights do not represent more than their mercantile relation, we could wonder: what is the work? And what is the meaning of their work? On the other side, the relations between the education and the employment always seem to be one of the main worries of the educational planning. This way, in many economists' opinion, the solution to unemployment would consist in the enlargement of the capital formation first and in the investment in education later. Nevertheless, certain evidences allow us to think that the increase of the capital by worker and the high rates of economic growth have not brought the descent of the unemployment rates, and the higher instruction level by worker do not seem to have had other effect on the unemployment than the increase of the average instruction level of the unemployed

La concisión en la creación de informes: un caso práctico

A través de un estudio realizado con alumnos adultos de inglés empresarial, dirigido hacia la creación de informes empresariales basándose en la información oral recibida, analizamos en qué medida 2 grupos de alumnos de diferentes niveles reflejan cierto tipo de expresiones innecesarias para el contenido del texto, y de qué forma el nivel y la cantidad de información influyen en los resultados finales
