    On the origin of the jet-like radio/X-ray morphology of G290.1-0.8

    The origin and evolution of supernova remnants of the mixed-morphology class is not well understood. Several remnants present distorted radio or X-ray shells with jet-like structures. G290.1-0.8 (MSH 11-61A) belongs to this class. We aim to investigate the nature of this supernova remnant in order to unveil the origin of its particular morphology. We based our work on the study of the X-ray emitting plasma properties and the conditions imposed by the cold interstellar medium where the remnant expanded. We use archival radio, HI line data and X-ray observations from XMM-Newton and Chandra observatories, to study G290.1-0.8 and its surrounding medium. Spatially resolved spectral analysis and mean photon energy maps are used to obtain physical and geometrical parameters of the source. Radio continuum and HI line maps give crucial information to understand the radio/X-ray morphology. The X-ray images show that the remnant presents two opposite symmetric bright spots on a symmetry axis running towards the NW-SE direction. Spectral analysis and mean photon energy maps confirm that the physical conditions of the emitting plasma are not homogeneous throughout the remnant. In fact, both bright spots have higher temperatures than the rest of the plasma and its constituents have not reached ionization equilibrium yet. HI line data reveal low density tube-like structures aligned along the same direction. This evidence supports the idea that the particular X-ray morphology observed is a direct consequence of the structure of the interstellar medium where the remnant evolved. However, the possibility that an undetected point-like object, as a neutron star, exists within the remnant and contributes to the X-ray emission cannot be discarded. Finally, we suggest that a supernova explosion due to the collapse of a high-mass star with a strong bipolar wind can explain the supernova remnant morphology.Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures.     Innovation and sectoral linkages in the agri-food system in the Valencian Community

    This paper aims to analyze the innovative effort of the agri-food system (AFS) in the Valencian Autonomous Community (VC), Spain, estimating the intensity of innovation in each subsector of the AFS. The analysis distinguishes between the direct and indirect (or induced) innovation intensities incorporated by the acquisition of inputs from other subsectors produced in the VC or in the rest of Spain. The methodology employed is based on the input-output framework combined with data of technological innovation in enterprises. This methodology provides the novelty of been applied to a region the VC and not to a country as it is usually done. The results show that the weight of intersectoral flows in the total innovation effort of the AFS is significant with marked differences between primary and food industry.     La presa de Campos del Paraíso (Cuenca), recientemente construida, es el órgano de regulación y distribución de los recursos suministrados por el Acueducto Tajo-Segura para abastecimiento de la Llanura Manchega. De ella parte una importante red de conducciones de más de 1.000 km de longitud, con la que se abastecerá a más de 100 núcleos urbanos, con una población global de unos 800.000 habitantes. Tiene este embalse encomendadas dos misiones importantes, una cotidiana consistente en regular los volúmenes de agua que ha de servir a la Llanura Manchega y otra de seguridad como receptor en emergencia del vaciado del Acueducto Tajo- Segura. El emplazamiento tiene la singularidad geológica de la existencia, bajo la plana aluvial del vaso, de capas subhorizontales de brechas calcáreas cretácicas permeables, lo que ha precisado ajustar su diseño a este condicionante para evitar pérdidas de agua por infiltración. En este artículo se describe el alcance de la actuación, el diseño estructural de esta presa de materiales sueltos, la solución dada a la impermeabilización del embalse, los detalles constructivos del sistema hidráulico (tomas, desagües y aliviadero) y la repercusión que esta obra tiene sobre la seguridad funcional del Acueducto Tajo-Segur

    The vaginal microbiota has importance in preserving vaginal health and defending the host against disease. The advent of new molecular techniques and computer science has allowed researchers to discover microbial composition in depth and associate the structure of vaginal microbial communities. There is a consensus that vaginal flora is grouped into a restricted number of communities, although the structure of the community is constantly changing. Certain Community-State Types (CSTs) are more associated with poor reproductive outcomes and sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) meanwhile, CSTs dominated by Lactobacillus species—particularly Lactobacillus crispatus—are more related to vaginal health. In this work, we have reviewed how modifiable and non-modifiable factors may affect normal vaginal microbiota homeostasis—including sexual behavior, race or ethnicity, and hygiene. Special interest has been given to how the use of probiotics, diet intake, and use of hormone replacement therapies (HRTs) can potentially impact vaginal microbiota composition

    La experiencia “Trabajar con desconocidos” es un formato de trabajo en equipo entre estudiantes, que siendo estos siempre de diferentes procedencias culturales, están invitados a trabajar a lo largo del curso académico con un compañero que desconocen. Un ejercicio que investiga el conocimiento implícito de aprender nuestra cultura arquitectónica mediante la comparación con otra totalmente ajena. Esta experiencia, desarrollada por la UD Soriano de la Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura de Madrid junto a cinco universidades internacionales, apuesta por formas de trabajo externas a la propia universidad. Formas de trabajo que se presentan en la disciplina de la arquitectura como un reto sobre el trabajo en equipo, y no solo con miembros que se conocen entre sí, que es lo que sucede habitualmente en las asignaturas taller como en Proyectos Arquitectónicos, sino con miembros realmente desconocidos entre sí, personas ajenas a nuestra cultura o afecciones intelectuales. La enseñanza universitaria debe afrontar esta carencia.“Working with strangers” is an experience of team working between students from different cultural origins, which are invited to work during the course with an unknown partner. It is an exercise that finds out, through the comparison with a totally different culture, the implicit knowledge of learning our own architectural culture. This experience, developed by the UD Soriano from the Architectural School of Madrid in collaboration with other five international universities, goes for ways of working that are external from university. Ways of working that face a challenge of team working with known partners and also with completely unknown ones. The first ones are so common in the way of teaching Architectural Projects subjects; the second ones are strange people foreign to our cultural and intellectual affections that will make us doubt and wonder.     Las necesidades del mercado del transporte actual exigen un incremento en la velocidad de circulación de los medios de transporte que realizan trayectos de media y larga distancia. Ésto, el compromiso con el medio ambiente y la saturación del espacio aéreo europeo, dejan ver el porqué del éxito actual de las líneas ferroviarias europeas de alta velocidad y en especial para las líneas de alta velocidad españolas con el titánico plan de inversiones que pronostica un futuro prometedor para este sector. Para alcanzar mayores prestaciones de forma más racional, económica y sistemática, se impone la utilización de herramientas de simulación, basadas en modelos matemáticos, que permitan simular el comportamiento del sistema de forma fiable y económica. Los requerimientos de los ferrocarriles hasta ahora permitía apoyarse en diseños veteranos totalmente probados, sin embargo hoy en día las exigencias son tales que para alcanzar el objetivo se deben utilizar herramientas informáticas dedicadas al estudio del comportamiento eléctrico. La herramienta de simulación, por tanto, permite el cálculo de las características técnicas de la electrificación obteniendo las magnitudes físicas necesarias para evaluar un funcionamiento correcto y dimensionar correctamente los elementos que lo componen

    Effect of ageing heat treatments on the microstructure and intergranular corrosion of powder metallurgy duplex stainless steels

    The influence of ageing heat treatments (675 and 875 °C for 1.5 to 48 h) on the microstructure and intergranular corrosion resistance of sintered in nitrogen duplex stainless steels was investigated. The materials were obtained by sintering mixtures of austenitic AISI 316L and ferritic AISI 430L powders. Corrosion behaviour was evaluated by using electrochemical techniques. The beneficial effect of nitrogen on corrosion behaviour of solution annealed samples was established. During ageing, secondary phases were precipitated and the intergranular and transgranular corrosion resistance significantly decreased though repassivation was observed in specimens aged at 875 °C for times up to 8 h.Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación, Dirección General de Programas y Transferencia de Conocimiento, Proyectos I+D, MAT2008-0278
