    An updated biostratigraphy for the late Aragonian and Vallesian of the Vallès-Penedès Basin (Catalonia)

    The Vallès-Penedès Basin (Catalonia, Spain) is a classical area for the study of the Miocene land mammal faunas and includes one of the densest and most continuous records in Eurasia. Furthermore, it is the type area for the Vallesian European land mammal age. After decades of study a huge amount of bio- and magnetostratigraphic data have been collected, allowing an unprecedented dating accuracy. Here we provide an updated local biostratigraphy for the late Aragonian, Vallesian and Turolian of the Vallès-Penedès Basin. This new biostratigraphic scheme is almost exclusively based on fossil rodents, which are the most abundant and one of the best known mammal orders in the area. Our proposal represents a significant refinement compared to previous attempts and provides a formal diagnosis and description of each zone, as well as clear definition of boundaries and a reference locality and section. The chronology of zone boundaries and main bioevents is based on detailed magnetostratigraphic data. The defined biozones allow for the correlation of the sites without associated magnetostratigraphical data. Finally, the correlation of the Vallès-Penedès local zones with other detailed local biostratigraphies, such as those of the Calatayud-Montalbán and Teruel basins (east-central Spain) is discussed. The sequence and chronology of the main bioevents is roughly comparable, although the rodent succession and the structure of the assemblage show important differences between these areas

    Bibliometric analysis in paediatric dental journals listed in journal citation reports. Current trends

    Aim The aim of this study was to analyse articles published in paediatric dental journals included in Journal Citation Reports (JCR), to determine current trends in paediatric publishing. Methods Articles included in paediatric dentistry journals in 2020 JCR were selected, published during the period 2008– 2020. After applying inclusion criteria, author-based parameters (article title, first author’s name, institution, sex and number of authors, number of affiliations, first/last author’s origin and geographic origin), and article-based parameters (article type, main topic, research design) were registered for each article. Results A total of 3,027 articles were analysed. The percentage of female authors showed an increasing positive tendency over the decade and the top producing country was the USA (16.5%). Dental surgery was the most recurrent topic (23.4%). Regarding the origin of the first author’s affiliation, 51% proceeded from the paediatric dentistry departments belonging to public institutions, with a decreasing trend in non-academic/ private affiliations. Positive and negative correlations exist between citation count and other variables. Conclusions International Journal of Paediatric Dentistry, Journal of Clinical Pediatric Dentistry, European Journal of Paediatric Dentistry and Pediatric Dentistry were the four main journals in terms of production volume, USA being the most productive country. The most recurrent topic was dental surgery, and the most common design was observational studies.     Discriminant analysis using fatty acids profile, stable carbon isotopes and tocopherols content as tool for feeding system prediction in Iberian pigs

    Aim of study: The application of three analytical methods (fatty acids: FA, tocopherols: TOC, and isotope ratio: ISO) to distinguish the feeding type received by Iberian pigs during the fattening stage.Area of study: This distinction is very important for the labelling of Iberian high-quality products in the Quercus forest located on the southwest of Iberian Peninsula, where several production systems coexist.Material and methods: Discriminant analysis on fat samples with unknown background obtained from commercial pigs was applied. The feasibility of the combination method to determine the authentication of feeding background was studied on samples from different fattening system: free-range feeding with acorn and pastures (BE); free-range feeding acorn and pastures plus commercial feeds (RE); open-air feeding with commercial feeds (CA); standard feeding with commercial feeds (CE).Main results: In a first application of the methods, the overall success rate was 60.1% for FA, 49.7% for ISO and 49.3% for TOC. When some of the batches were reclassified attending to those previous results and additional information available about farm characteristics, ISO and TOC analyses had a 70% of success rate in the four categories, whereas FA showed 40.5%, attributable to the use of high-oleic commercial diets. The predictions improved with the method combination. The ISO+TOC combination achieved a 84.1% of success in prediction. When it was reduced to just two categories (acorn vs non-acorn), the success reached a 95% for FA+TOC and ISO+TOC.Research highlights: The use of these methods as a complementary tool for quality controls is highly recommended to avoid undesirable misclassifications

    Updated Aragonian biostratigraphy: Small Mammal distribution and its implications for the Miocene European Chronology

    This paper contains formal definitions of the Early to Middle Aragonian (late Early–Middle Miocene) smallmammal biozones from the Aragonian type area in North Central Spain. The stratigraphical schemes of two of the best studied areas for the Lower and Middle Miocene, the Aragonian type area in Spain and the Upper Freshwater Molasse from the North Alpine Foreland Basin in Switzerland, have been compared. This comparison allows the analysis of the order of shared mammal events in the two countries, and the quantification of the resulting asynchronies based on their temporal correlations. The order of the events is very similar in Spain and Switzerland. In order to estimate the diachrony, two age-model options are used for the Swiss record. Our preferred option yields no discrepancies with SW European paleomagnetic and radiometric calibrations of the Ramblian and Early Aragonian bioevents. All Swiss first taxa occurrences precede those in the Aragonian type area by 0.74Myr on average. The asynchronies (1-2Myr) of the species arriving in the late Middle to early Late Aragonian may be higher than in the Early Aragonian (0-1Myr). The implications for the biochronological mammal Neogene system are discussed. Evidence is given confirming the unfeasibility of a formal European biozonation, since it is realised, that 1) most indicator species and many genera of rodents yielding the most detailed zonations have limited geographical ranges hampering recognition of the mammal Neogene zones; and 2) first and last taxon occurrences are diachronical. Therefore, the mammal Neogene system based on a sequence of time-ordered reference localities is preferred to the one based on selected bioevents “developed in widespread geographic areas”
