    Possibility to realize spin-orbit-induced correlated physics in iridium fluorides

    Recent theoretical predictions of "unprecedented proximity" of the electronic ground state of iridium fluorides to the SU(2) symmetric jeff=1/2j_{\mathrm{eff}}=1/2 limit, relevant for superconductivity in iridates, motivated us to investigate their crystal and electronic structure. To this aim, we performed high-resolution x-ray powder diffraction, Ir L3_3-edge resonant inelastic x-ray scattering, and quantum chemical calculations on Rb2_2[IrF6_6] and other iridium fluorides. Our results are consistent with the Mott insulating scenario predicted by Birol and Haule [Phys. Rev. Lett. 114, 096403 (2015)], but we observe a sizable deviation of the jeff=1/2j_{\mathrm{eff}}=1/2 state from the SU(2) symmetric limit. Interactions beyond the first coordination shell of iridium are negligible, hence the iridium fluorides do not show any magnetic ordering down to at least 20 K. A larger spin-orbit coupling in iridium fluorides compared to oxides is ascribed to a reduction of the degree of covalency, with consequences on the possibility to realize spin-orbit-induced strongly correlated physics in iridium fluorides

    Ultrafast transport of laser-excited spin polarized carriers in Au/Fe/MgO(001)

    A time domain approach to probe hot carrier-induced spin dynamics is demonstrated. The experiments are performed in epitaxial Au/Fe/MgO(001), where spin-polarized hot carriers are excited in the Fe layer by 35 fs laser pulses. They propagate to the Au surface where the transient spin polarization is detected by magneto-induced second harmonic generation. Different energies of majority and minority hot carriers excited in the exchange-split Fe band structure lead to their spindependent lifetimes in Au. Accordingly, two spin-polarized current contributions which propagate superdiffusively at different velocities result in a spin current pulse of about 100 fs duration.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure

    Cocaine Self-Administration and Abstinence Modulate NMDA Receptor Subunits and Active Zone Proteins in the Rat Nucleus Accumbens

    Cocaine-induced plasticity in the glutamatergic transmission and its N-methyl-d-aspartate (NMDA) receptors are critically involved in the development of substance use disorder. The presynaptic active zone proteins control structural synaptic plasticity; however, we are still far from understanding the molecular determinants important for cocaine seeking behavior. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of cocaine self-administration and different conditions of cocaine forced abstinence on the composition of the NMDA receptor subunits and on the levels of active zone proteins, i.e., Ras-related protein 3A (Rab3A), Rab3 interacting molecules 1 (RIM1) and mammalian uncoordinated protein 13 (Munc13) in the rat nucleus accumbens. We found an up-regulation of the accumbal levels of GluN1 and GluN2A following cocaine self-administration that was paralleled by an increase of Munc13 and RIM1 levels. At the same time, we also demonstrated that different conditions of cocaine abstinence abolished changes in NMDA receptor subunits (except for higher GluN1 levels after cocaine abstinence with extinction training), while an increase in the Munc13 concentration was shown in rats housed in an enriched environment. In conclusion, cocaine self-administration is associated with the specific up-regulation of the NMDA receptor subunit composition and is related with new presynaptic targets controlling neurotransmitter release. Moreover, changes observed in cocaine abstinence with extinction training and in an enriched environment in the levels of NMDA receptor subunit and in the active zone protein, respectively, may represent a potential regulatory step in cocaine-seeking behavior

    Sustainable Co-Design with Older People: The case of a Public Restorative Garden in Milan (Italy)

    The demographic aging and the evolution of lifestyles require new strategies to promote the well-being and active aging of elderly. Active aging depends on many factors: some of these are related to objective data such as physical environment, others are personal elements; it is important to improve environmental physical factors to encourage personal attitudes to the green spaces in use. To design a small sustainable restorative green space in Milan, Italy, restorative garden design criteria are summarized in the first section of the paper and both social and environmental sustainability are considered. The methodology section describes the co-design process and how it was applied to include dierent older user groups in the design of the area. In the results section authors apply a taxonomy based on the four properties of restorative settings according to the Attention Restoration Theory by Kaplan (compatibility, being away, extent, fascination): this provides a unified system to classify users\u2019 expectations and to describe the final project. The proposed co-design process combines social and environmental sustainability, as it provides designers an insight about the user\u2019s experience in nature. Such information can be fruitfully integrated with professional competences about comfort aspects and environmental protection in order to improve the whole design project

    From early stress to 12-month development in very preterm infants: Preliminary findings on epigenetic mechanisms and brain growth

    Very preterm (VPT) infants admitted to Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) are at risk for altered brain growth and less-than-optimal socio-emotional development. Recent research suggests that early NICU-related stress contributes to socio-emotional impairments in VPT infants at 3 months through epigenetic regulation (i.e., DNA methylation) of the serotonin transporter gene (SLC6A4). In the present longitudinal study we assessed: (a) the effects of NICU-related stress and SLC6A4 methylation variations from birth to discharge on brain development at term equivalent age (TEA); (b) the association between brain volume at TEA and socio-emotional development (i.e., Personal-Social scale of Griffith Mental Development Scales, GMDS) at 12 months corrected age (CA). Twenty-four infants had complete data at 12-month-age. SLC6A4 methylation was measured at a specific CpG previously associated with NICU-related stress and socio-emotional stress. Findings confirmed that higher NICU-related stress associated with greater increase of SLC6A4 methylation at NICU discharge. Moreover, higher SLC6A4 discharge methylation was associated with reduced anterior temporal lobe (ATL) volume at TEA, which in turn was significantly associated with less-than-optimal GMDS Personal-Social scale score at 12 months CA. The reduced ATL volume at TEA mediated the pathway linking stress-related increase in SLC6A4 methylation at NICU discharge and socio-emotional development at 12 months CA. These findings suggest that early adversity-related epigenetic changes might contribute to the long-lasting programming of socio-emotional development in VPT infants through epigenetic regulation and structural modifications of the developing brain

    Rebranding a District: The Breiðholt Project in Reykjavik

    Cities have gained increasing attention from government, researchers, and industry. The focus upon smarter and more efficient cities is important, but incomplete. Against this backdrop, COST Action builds on a European Science Foundation exploratory workshop on the emerging theme of smart and liveable cities. COST Action’s framework for People Friendly Cities in a Data Rich World acknowledges that the city is largely the product of top-down expertise, and a process in which the citizen plays a marginal role. Despite this top-down approach, citizens have had to build personal and collective biographies from the infrastructure of the city. This paper explores how the community of Breiðholt, Reykjavik, is being transformed from a disadvantaged suburb, characterised as a ‘ghetto’, into a thriving community where citizens play a central role in decision-making. This paper presents the outcomes of a fieldwork experience, undertaken in Breiðholt as part of COST Action’s Winter Training School, focused on the drivers behind, actions, and benefits of the Breiðholt Project and the Breiðholt Congress. In making recommendations for the Project and Congress, and other community-based initiatives, this paper encourages the sharing of best practices among different departments of the city, and to better utilise bridge makers (key stakeholders/community leaders) to build trust through face-to-face interactions with citizens

    Nanoscale electrical conductivity of the purple membrane monolayer

    Nanoscale electron transport through the purple membrane monolayer, a two-dimensional crystal lattice of the transmembrane protein bacteriorhodopsin, is studied by conductive atomic force microscopy. We demonstrate that the purple membrane exhibits nonresonant tunneling transport, with two characteristic tunneling regimes depending on the applied voltage (direct and Fowler-Nordheim). Our results show that the purple membrane can carry significant current density at the nanometer scale, several orders of magnitude larger than previously estimated by macroscale measurements
