Diversity in Advertisements and Brand Perception
This research project examines the relationship between representation of diversity in marketing and brand perception. The debate about whether diversity in advertisements impacts how consumers perceive and purchase from brands is ongoing. Thus, this study examines whether companies are rewarded for representing diversity in their advertisements and punished for representation that is inappropriate or insensitive. We conducted an online survey among Gettysburg College students and elicited their beliefs about the importance of diversity in marketing campaigns. We found that consumers are more likely to buy from companies that represent more racial diversity in their advertisements. The same was found for companies that represent more diversity of body types in their advertisements. The appropriateness of advertisements was also found to have an impact on the likelihood of consumers to purchase from companies, with consumers being less likely to buy from companies that have racially inappropriate or insensitive advertisements
Envisioning health equity for American Indian/Alaska Natives: a unique HIT opportunity
The Indian Health Service provides care to remote and under-resourced communities in the United States. American Indian/Alaska Native patients have some of the highest morbidity and mortality among any ethnic group in the United States. Starting in the 1980s, the IHS implemented the Resource and Patient Management System health information technology (HIT) platform to improve efficiency and quality to address these disparities. The IHS is currently assessing the Resource and Patient Management System to ensure that changing health information needs are met. HIT assessments have traditionally focused on cost, reimbursement opportunities, infrastructure, required or desired functionality, and the ability to meet provider needs. Little information exists on frameworks that assess HIT legacy systems to determine solutions for an integrated rural healthcare system whose end goal is health equity. This search for a next-generation HIT solution for a historically underserved population presents a unique opportunity to envision and redefine HIT that supports health equity as its core mission
Socio-cultural influences upon knowledge of sexually transmitted infections: a qualitative study with heterosexual middle-aged adults in Scotland
There has been a recent global increase in sexually transmitted infections (STIs) including HIV among
adults aged over 45. Limited evidence exists regarding middle-aged adults’ knowledge of STIs other than HIV. This
qualitative study sought to understand middle-aged adults’ knowledge of STIs within a socio-cultural context.
Individual interviews, based on a life-course approach, were conducted with 31 recently sexually active
heterosexual men and women. Participants were aged between 45 and 65 and of mixed relationship status
(14 were single, 17 in a relationship). Thematic analysis identified four key findings, including: “engagement with
STI-related knowledge”; “general knowledge of STIs”; “learning about STIs from children”; and “limited application
of knowledge”. The findings allow insight into a neglected area, and indicate that socio-cultural factors influence
middle-aged adults’ STI-related knowledge acquisition throughout the life course. These are important implications
for the prevention of STIs, particularly in addressing the on-going stigmatisation of STIs in older age groups
Local Density Approximation for proton-neutron pairing correlations. I. Formalism
In the present study we generalize the self-consistent
Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (HFB) theory formulated in the coordinate space to the
case which incorporates an arbitrary mixing between protons and neutrons in the
particle-hole (p-h) and particle-particle (p-p or pairing) channels. We define
the HFB density matrices, discuss their spin-isospin structure, and construct
the most general energy density functional that is quadratic in local
densities. The consequences of the local gauge invariance are discussed and the
particular case of the Skyrme energy density functional is studied. By varying
the total energy with respect to the density matrices the self-consistent
one-body HFB Hamiltonian is obtained and the structure of the resulting mean
fields is shown. The consequences of the time-reversal symmetry, charge
invariance, and proton-neutron symmetry are summarized. The complete list of

Surprising variations in the rotation of the chemically peculiar stars CU Virginis and V901 Orionis
CU Vir and V901 Ori belong among these few magnetic chemically peculiar stars
whose rotation periods vary on timescales of decades. We aim to study the
stability of the periods in CU Vir and V901 Ori using all accessible
observational data containing phase information. We collected all available
relevant archived observations supplemented with our new measurements of these
stars and analysed the period variations of the stars using a novel method that
allows for the combination of data of diverse sorts. We found that the shapes
of their phase curves were constant, while the periods were changing. Both
stars exhibit alternating intervals of rotational braking and acceleration. The
rotation period of CU Vir was gradually shortening until the year 1968, when it
reached its local minimum of 0.52067198 d. The period then started increasing,
reaching its local maximum of 0.5207163 d in the year 2005. Since that time the
rotation has begun to accelerate again. We also found much smaller period
changes in CU Vir on a timescale of several years. The rotation period of V901
Ori was increasing for the past quarter-century, reaching a maximum of 1.538771
d in the year 2003, when the rotation period began to decrease. A theoretically
unexpected alternating variability of rotation periods in these stars would
remove the spin-down time paradox and brings a new insight into structure and
evolution of magnetic upper-main-sequence stars.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure
Hybrid Stars in a Strong Magnetic Field
We study the effects of high magnetic fields on the particle population and
equation of state of hybrid stars using an extended hadronic and quark SU(3)
non-linear realization of the sigma model. In this model the degrees of freedom
change naturally from hadrons to quarks as the density and/or temperature
increases. The effects of high magnetic fields and anomalous magnetic moment
are visible in the macroscopic properties of the star, such as mass, adiabatic
index, moment of inertia, and cooling curves. Moreover, at the same time that
the magnetic fields become high enough to modify those properties, they make

Is salinity the main ecologic factor that shapes the distribution of two endemic Mediterranean plant species of the genus Gypsophila?

G. struthium is a regionally dominant Iberian endemic gypsophyte, whereas G. tomentosa is a narrow endemic reported as halophyte. Theworking hypothesis is that salt tolerance shapes the presence of these species in their specific habitats. Methods Taking a multidisciplinary approach, we assessed the soil characteristics and vegetation structure at the sampling site, seed germination and seedling development, growth and flowering, synthesis of proline and cation accumulation under artificial conditions of increasing salt stress and effect of PEG on germination
and seedling development. Results Soil salinity was low at the all sampling points where the two species grow, but moisture was higher in the area of G. tomentosa. Differences were found in the species salt and drought tolerance. The different parameters tested did not show a clear pattern indicating the main role of salt tolerance in plant distribution. Conclusions G. tomentosa cannot be considered a true halophyte as previously reported because it is unable to complete its life cycle under salinity. The presence of G. tomentosa in habitats bordering salt marshes is a strategy to avoid plant competition and extreme water

Effects of Salt Stress on Three Ecologically Distinct Plantago Species
Comparative studies on the responses to salt stress of taxonomically related taxa should
help to elucidate relevant mechanisms of stress tolerance in plants. We have applied this
strategy to three Plantago species adapted to different natural habitats, P. crassifolia and P.
coronopus both halophytes and P. major, considered as salt-sensitive since it is never
found in natural saline habitats. Growth inhibition measurements in controlled salt treatments
indicated, however, that P. major is quite resistant to salt stress, although less than
its halophytic congeners. The contents of monovalent ions and specific osmolytes were
determined in plant leaves after four-week salt treatments. Salt-treated plants of the three
taxa accumulated Na+ and Cl- in response to increasing external NaCl concentrations, to a
lesser extent in P. major than in the halophytes; the latter species also showed higher ion
contents in the non-stressed plants. In the halophytes, K+ concentration decreased at moderate
salinity levels, to increase again under high salt conditions, whereas in P. major K+
contents were reduced only above 400 mM NaCl. Sorbitol contents augmented in all plants,
roughly in parallel with increasing salinity, but the relative increments and the absolute values
reached did not differ much in the three taxa. On the contrary, a strong (relative) accumulation
of proline in response to high salt concentrations (600 800 mM NaCl) was
observed in the halophytes, but not in P. major. These results indicate that the responses to
salt stress triggered specifically in the halophytes, and therefore the most relevant for tolerance
in the genus Plantago are: a higher efficiency in the transport of toxic ions to the
leaves, the capacity to use inorganic ions as osmotica, even under low salinity conditions,
and the activation, in response to very high salt concentrations, of proline accumulation and

Physics of Neutron Star Crusts
The physics of neutron star crusts is vast, involving many different research
fields, from nuclear and condensed matter physics to general relativity. This
review summarizes the progress, which has been achieved over the last few
years, in modeling neutron star crusts, both at the microscopic and macroscopic
levels. The confrontation of these theoretical models with observations is also
