novelas.____________________________________
Greek Romance has been interpretated from a religious point of view from the
beginning of the XX Century. Scholars such as Merkelbach or Kerényi have tried to show
that Greek romances must be read as iniciatic texts of Isis, Helios or Eros worship.
Nowadays, such interpretations cannot be held, although the importance of religion in
the genre is still recognised. In this sense, this paper tries to determine the meaning of
the fact that the two main protagonists in two of the preserved romances are priestesses
of the goddess Artemis, as well as the narratological function of that circumstance in the
romances
Ninus and Metiochus in the school of rhetoric: the first Greek novels
The aim of this paper is to underline the influence of school rhetoric in two passages of Ninus and Parthenope. Ninus' speech in presence of his aunt Derkeia (frag. A of P.Berol. 6926) is analysed from the point of view of the stasis-theory and its most relevant formal features are commented. Metiochus’ refutation of the traditional mythical narrative on Eros (second column of P.Berol.7927) is dealt with the progymnasmatic theory. Moreover, the love-related motifs and the references to the previous literature are highlighted. He aim of this paper is to underline the influence of school rhetoric in two passages of Ninus and Parthenope.
This paper analyses the maxims (gnomai) in Chariton of Aphrodisias’ Callirhoe as resources for characterisation. It also highlights that most of them are expressed by the narrator. They must be considered, along with the other devices, such as summaries, anticipations and evaluations, as devices used to show the narrator’s omniscience and omnipresence in the plot
Novel and Progymnasmata : the exercise of narration in Leucippe and Clitophon

This paper deals with the acclaimed TV series Games of Thrones, which belongs to the genre of epic fantasy, as well as the literary saga. Three of its most important constituents are addressed: the abduction of a woman (Lyanna Stark) as the war’s motif, the epic hero (embodied by Jon Snow) and the violation of the sacred duty of hospitality (represented by the episodes of the Red Wedding and the Mutiny at Craster’s Keep). Their impact on the plot is highlighted. Moreover, we analyze the common features this elements share with some Greek myths narrated or mentioned in different Graeco-Roman literary works, especially epic and tragic ones
Maxims ( gnomai ) in the Greek Novels: Fo rm, Subjects and Sources
novelas griegas conservadas completas: Calírroe, Efesiacas, Dafnis y Cloe, Leucipa y
The form, subjects and sources of maxims (gnomai) in the five Greek novels which
survive complete are analysed: Callirhoe, Ephesiaca, Daphnis and Chloe, Leucippe
and Clitophon and Aethiopica. Maxims have a long tradition in Greek Literature, as
well as an important role in rhetorical education. Thus, Greek novelists, because of
education and tradition, are not indifferent to this resource. Regarding their form, most
of the maxims in the novels are descriptive; they use the generalization principle, which is characteristic of this kind of expressions, and is inserted in the text by means
of connectives meaning explanation, conclusion, antithesis or simply addition. Also
authors use stylistic devices to highlight them, especially Achilles Tatius and
Heliodorus. Maxims in novels deal with love, beauty and human nature, which are the
main subject of the genre. By way of an example, we take a closer look at those
maxims regarding the god Eros and women, and connect them with the literary and
gnomological tradition
In this paper prophetic dreams of Heliodorus’
Aethiopica are analysed, their interpretation keys
are explained and their functions within the narration
are emphasized. These oniric visions are also
studied as a device to create suspense and as a
means of divine will to rule the story. Finally paralelisms
and relationships with the dreams of the
other Greek love novels are highlighted
Relato (διήγημα) y écfrasis (ἔκφρασις) en la novela griega
In the five extant Greek novels some of the elements of narrative (person, event,
time, place and manner) are often amplified in order to become rhetorical
ekphraseis as described in the Progymnasmata . In this paper these ekphraseis ,
their function and their formal and stylistic characteristics are analysed
