Alternative Large-Scale Conservation Visions for Northern Maine: Interviews with Decision Leaders in Maine

    Get PDF
Based on confidential interviews with 21 decision leaders in Maine, Elizabeth Baldwin, Laura Kenefic, and Will LaPage examine the complexity of the conflicts over alternate visions for large-scale conservation in Maine. Exploring models that may be useful for policymakers grappling with competing values for Maineā€™s forests, they present four alternatives: national forests, new U.S. forest service models, forest heritage areas, and the British national park model. The authors found that the leaders interviewed agreed about the need for some level of conservation, but did not completely agree on how this might happen and where the decision-making power should lie

A mixed methods approach to assess the likelihood of testing for STI using self-collected samples among behaviourally bisexual women

Objectives Behaviourally bisexual women (women who have sex with women and men (WSWM)) are more likely to report a history of sexually transmitted infections (STI) than women who have sex exclusively with men or exclusively with women. Barriers to care may prohibit WSWM from seeking STI testing. The present study investigated participant willingness to self-collect oral, vaginal and anal samples for STI testing. Methods Eighty WSWM were recruited from two midwestern locations. After completing an online questionnaire, a subset of the participants were interviewed (n=54) and provided the option to self-collect oral, vaginal and/or anal samples to screen for Chlamydia trachomatis, Neisseria gonorrhoeae and Trichomonas vaginalis. Results Over two-thirds (67.5%, n=54) of the participants completed the baseline scheduled and attended the interview. The majority of these participants provided vaginal (87.0%, n=47), oral (85.2%, n=46) and/or anal (61.1%, n=33) samples. Participants with a history of anal play were significantly more likely to provide an anal sample. C. trachomatis infection was identified in the samples of 6.8% (n=3) of the participants including 4.5% (n=2) of the vaginal samples and 3.3% (n=1) of the anal samples. None of the samples were positive for N. gonorrhoeae or T. vaginalis. Participants who reported a recent history of anal sexual behaviour with a male partner were significantly more likely to self-collect an anal sample. Conclusions Given the comparatively high STI rates among WSWM, self-sampling in non-traditional settings may present a unique opportunity to provide needed care to this underserved population of women

The development of a college biology self-efficacy instrument for nonmajors

ABSTRACT: In an effort to test the effectiveness of teaching and learning strategies that may increase biological literacy for nonbiology majors, an NSF-funded research project called "The Slice of Life," was conducted from 1994 to 1998. In the present study, a selfefficacy instrument was constructed and designed specifically for the project to determine students' self-reported confidence in understanding and using biology in their lives. Based on social cognitive theory, the premise for developing such an instrument was that a specific measure of biological self-efficacy was deemed to be an important predictor of the change processes necessary to improve students' biological understanding. Results of this study indicate that the Biology Self-Efficacy Scale was a valid and reliable tool for studying nonbiology majors' confidence in mastering biological literacy. Factor analysis supported the contention that the Biology Self-Efficacy Scale was a multidimensional construct consisting of at least three dimensions: methods of biology; generalization to other biology/science courses and analyzing data; and application of biological concepts and skills. These dimensions represent three components of biological literacy that have been commonly described in the literature. The instrument may lead to further understanding of student behavior, which in turn can facilitate the development of strategies that may increase students' desire to understand and study biology. More specifically, by using the self-efficacy tool as a pre-and posttest indicator, instructors can gain insight into whether students' confidence levels increase as they engage in more complex tasks during the course, and, in addition, what type of teaching strategies are most effective in buildin

Financial health, exports, and firm survival: evidence from UK and French firms

    Get PDF
We use firm-level data for the UK and France to assess the role of exporting in the link between financial health and firm survival. We examine whether firms at different stages of export activity (starters, exiters, continuers, switchers) react differently to changes in financial variables. In general, export starters and exiters experience much stronger adverse effects of financial constraints for their survival prospects. By contrast, the exit probability of continuous exporters and export switchers is less negatively affected by financial characteristics. These relationships between exporting, finance and survival are broadly similar in the UK and French samples

A research agenda for the retrofitting of residential buildings in China ā€“ A case study

    Get PDF
The high-rise residential buildings of China will soon need retrofitting and any such retrofitting should include consideration of new energy saving methods and ā€˜greenā€™ technologies. A research agenda is needed to meet this challenge. This paper presents a research agenda for the ā€˜greenā€™ retrofitting of residential buildings. The agenda is based on the input of 25 national and international experts which was produced by a novel methodology specifically designed to discuss the key questions relating to the retrofitting of residential buildings. This methodology, based on Problem Tree Analysis, proved an effective method of producing an agenda for the research that is needed to facilitate such change. The research needs are presented under six headings. Stages for undertaking the research activities under each of these headings have been identified. The agenda highlights that the challenge of retrofitting is holistic and includes not just engineering and construction actions but economic, social and governmental requirements. Key aspects of the research agenda include the need for better macro-economic and micro-economic models and a better understanding of people's needs and expectations. These topics are discussed together with recent research findings both from China and other countries
