Water in the Near IR spectrum of Comet 8P/Tuttle

High resolution spectra of Comet 8P/Tuttle were obtained in the frequency range 3440.6-3462.6 cm-1 on 3 January 2008 UT using CGS4 with echelle grating on UKIRT. In addition to recording strong solar pumped fluorescent (SPF) lines of H2O, the long integration time (152 miutes on target) enabled eight weaker H2O features to be assigned, most of which had not previously been identified in cometary spectra. These transitions, which are from higher energy upper states, are similar in character to the so-called 'SH' lines recorded in the post Deep Impact spectrum of comet Tempel 1 (Barber et al., 2007). We have identified certain characteristics that these lines have in common, and which in addition to helping to define this new class of cometary line, give some clues to the physical processes involved in their production. Finally, we derive an H2O rotational temperature of 62+/- K and a water production rate of (1.4+/-0.3)E28 molecules/s.Comment: Paper has been accepted for publication by MNRAS (11/06/09

Psychological capital intervention (PCI): a replication and extension

    Get PDF
Psychological Capital (PsyCap) is a positive individual characteristic, and its malleability and openness to development have made it the focus of considerable attention in recent years. A training procedure for improving individuals’ PsyCap has been advanced and tested by Luthans and colleagues in a North American sample. The purpose of the current study was to generalize the effectiveness of the PsyCap Intervention (Luthans, Avey, Avolio, Norman, & Combs, 2006) when conducted by different trainers (i.e., replication), and to explore its longer term effects (i.e., extension). We trained a pooled sample ( N = 40) of students and professionals in Bulgaria and conducted a one-month follow-up assessment of PsyCap in order to examine the durability of the training effects. The statistical analyses revealed significant improvements in the overall PsyCap after training as well as in each of its four dimensions, namely, self-efficacy, hope, resilience, and optimism; remarkably, these improvements remained stable over one month, attesting to the durability of the training effects in the samples of both students and professionals. These results contribute to the accrual of scientific knowledge on a theory-driven and evidence-based HRD intervention.info:eu-repo/semantics/submittedVersio

A posteriori error estimates for nonconforming approximations of Steklov eigenvalue problems

    Get PDF
This paper deals with a posteriori error estimators for the non conforming CrouzeixRaviart finite element approximations of the Steklov eigenvalue problem. First, we define an error estimator of the residual type which can be computed locally from the approximate eigenpair and we prove the equivalence between this estimator and the broken energy norm of the error with constants independent of the corresponding eigenvalue. Next, we prove that edge residuals dominate the volumetric part of the residual and that the volumetric part of the residual terms dominate the normal component of the jumps of the discrete fluxes across interior edges. Finally, based on these results, we introduce two simpler equivalent error estimators. The analysis shows that these a posteriori error estimates are optimal up to higher order terms and that may be used for the design of adaptive algorithms.Facultad de Ciencias Exacta

Spectral approximation of variationally-posed eigenvalue problems by nonconforming methods

    Get PDF
This paper deals with the nonconforming spectral approximation of variationally posed eigenvalue problems. It is an extension to more general situations of known previous results about nonconforming methods. As an application of the present theory, convergence and optimal order error estimates are proved for the lowest order Crouzeix-Raviart approximation of the eigenpairs of two representative second-order elliptical operators.

This essay aims to analyze the Ramón Menéndez Pidal’s vision of Bartolomé de Las Casas, examinating –in addition to several articles of the author– some parts of a detailed work of Menéndez Pidal, entitled El Padre Las Casas. Su doble personalidad. In this book Menéndez Pidal rewrote the Bartolomé de Las Casas biografy, analyzing every aspect of his life and of his writings, in order to demonstrate that the «Defender of the Indians» actually suffered from personality disorders, and his paranoia distorted his perception of reality.
