The effects of disk and dust structure on observed polarimetric images of protoplanetary disks
Imaging polarimetry is a powerful tool for imaging faint circumstellar
material. For a correct analysis of observations we need to fully understand
the effects of dust particle parameters, as well as the effects of the
telescope, atmospheric seeing, and assumptions about the data reduction and
processing of the observed signal. Here we study the major effects of dust
particle structure, size-dependent grain settling, and instrumental properties.
We performed radiative transfer modeling using different dust particle models
and disk structures. To study the influence of seeing and telescope diffraction
we ran the models through an instrument simulator for the ExPo dual-beam
imaging polarimeter mounted at the 4.2m William Herschel Telescope (WHT).
Particle shape and size have a strong influence on the brightness and
detectability of the disks. In the simulated observations, the central
resolution element also contains contributions from the inner regions of the
protoplanetary disk besides the unpolarized central star. This causes the
central resolution element to be polarized, making simple corrections for
instrumental polarization difficult. This effect strongly depends on the
spatial resolution, so adaptive optics systems are needed for proper
polarization calibration. We find that the commonly employed homogeneous sphere
model gives results that differ significantly from more realistic models. For a
proper analysis of the wealth of data available now or in the near future, one
must properly take the effects of particle types and disk structure into
account. The observed signal depends strongly on the properties of these more
realistic models, thus providing a potentially powerful diagnostic. We conclude
that it is important to correctly understand telescope depolarization and

The First Science Results from SPHERE: Disproving the Predicted Brown Dwarf around V471 Tau
Variations of eclipse arrival times have recently been detected in several
post common envelope binaries consisting of a white dwarf and a main sequence
companion star. The generally favoured explanation for these timing variations
is the gravitational pull of one or more circumbinary substellar objects
periodically moving the center of mass of the host binary. Using the new
extreme-AO instrument SPHERE, we image the prototype eclipsing post-common
envelope binary V471 Tau in search of the brown dwarf that is believed to be
responsible for variations in its eclipse arrival times. We report that an
unprecedented contrast of 12.1 magnitudes in the H band at a separation of 260
mas was achieved, but resulted in a non-detection. This implies that there is
no brown dwarf present in the system unless it is three magnitudes fainter than
predicted by evolutionary track models, and provides damaging evidence against
the circumbinary interpretation of eclipse timing variations. In the case of
V471 Tau, a more consistent explanation is offered with the Applegate

Non-Coding RNA Sequencing of Equine Endometrium During Maternal Recognition of Pregnancy.
Maternal recognition of pregnancy (MRP) in the mare is not well defined. In a non-pregnant mare, prostaglandin F2α (PGF) is released on day 14 post-ovulation (PO) to cause luteal regression, resulting in loss of progesterone production. Equine MRP occurs prior to day 14 to halt PGF production. Studies have failed to identify a gene candidate for MRP, so attention has turned to small, non-coding RNAs. The objective of this study was to evaluate small RNA (<200 nucleotides) content in endometrium during MRP. Mares were used in a cross-over design with each having a pregnant and non-mated cycle. Each mare was randomly assigned to collection day 11 or 13 PO (n = 3/day) and endometrial biopsies were obtained. Total RNA was isolated and sequencing libraries were prepared using a small RNA library preparation kit and sequenced on a HiSeq 2000. EquCab3 was used as the reference genome and DESeq2 was used for statistical analysis. On day 11, 419 ncRNAs, representing miRNA, snRNA, snoRNA, scaRNA, and vaultRNA, were different between pregnancy statuses, but none on day 13. Equine endometrial ncRNAs with unknown structure and function were also identified. This study is the first to describe ncRNA transcriptome in equine endometrium. Exocomet signatures around the A-shell star Leo?
We present an intensive monitoring of high-resolution spectra of the Ca {\sc
ii} K line in the A7IV shell star Leo at very short (minutes, hours),
short (night to night), and medium (weeks, months) timescales. The spectra show
remarkable variable absorptions on timescales of hours, days, and months. The
characteristics of these sporadic events are very similar to most that are
observed toward the debris disk host star Pic, which are commonly
interpreted as signs of the evaporation of solid, comet-like bodies grazing or
falling onto the star. Therefore, our results suggest the presence of solid
bodies around Leo. To our knowledge, with the exception of Pic,
our monitoring has the best time resolution at the mentioned timescales for a
star with events attributed to exocomets. Assuming the cometary scenario and
considering the timescales of our monitoring, our results indicate that
Leo presents the richest environment with comet-like events known to date,

The short term debt vs. long term debt puzzle: a model for the optimal mix
This paper argues that the existing finance literature is inadequate with respect to its coverage of capital structure of small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs). In particular it is argued that the cost of equity (being both conceptually ill defined and empirically non quantifiable) is not applicable to the capital structure decisions for a large proportion of SMEs and the optimal capital structure depends only on the mix of short and long term debt. The paper then presents a model, developed by practitioners for optimising the debt mix and demonstrates its practical application using an Italian firm's debt structure as a case study
BP Piscium: its flaring disc imaged with SPHERE/ZIMPOL
Whether BP Piscium (BP Psc) is either a pre-main sequence T Tauri star at d ≈ 80 pc, or a post-main sequence G giant at d ≈ 300 pc is still not clear. As a first-ascent giant, it is the first to be observed with a molecular and dust disc. Alternatively, BP Psc would be among the nearest T Tauri stars with a protoplanetary disc (PPD). We investigate whether the disc geometry resembles typical PPDs, by comparing polarimetric images with radiative transfer models. Our Very Large Telescope/Spectro-Polarimetric High-contrast Exoplanet REsearch (SPHERE)/Zurich IMaging Polarimeter (ZIMPOL) observations allow us to perform polarimetric differential imaging, reference star differential imaging, and Richardson–Lucy deconvolution. We present the first visible light polarization and intensity images of the disc of BP Psc. Our deconvolution confirms the disc shape as detected before, mainly showing the southern side of the disc. In polarized intensity the disc is imaged at larger detail and also shows the northern side, giving it the typical shape of high-inclination flared discs. We explain the observed disc features by retrieving the large-scale geometry with MCMAX radiative transfer modelling, which yields a strongly flared model, atypical for discs of T Tauri stars
Changes of structural and techno-functional properties of high hydrostatic pressure (HHP) treated whey protein isolate over refrigerated storage
This work assessed the effect of storage time on the structure and functionality of HHP-treated whey protein isolate (WPI). Different pressures (100–600 MPa) and treatment times (15–30 min) were applied to aqueous WPI dispersions (5% w/v). The induced degree of unfolding was evaluated to select optimal HHP treatment conditions of WPI before storage at 4 °C. Conformational and techno-functional properties of untreated and optimally HHP-treated WPI samples were determined by UV–Vis and IR spectroscopy, foaming capacity, and interfacial tension measurements, respectively. Further tests of HHP-assisted hydrolysis of WPI were performed by α-chymotrypsin, bromelain, or their mixture (1:1 w/w), with the degree of hydrolysis (DH%) and electrophoretic patterns analyzed. The maximum unfolding degree was detected after a treatment of 400 MPa and 15 min and, at these processing conditions, no aggregation occurred. However, the structural changes achieved upon HHP were gradually lost during storage through a first-order refolding process (kREF. = 0.031 h−1), with restoring of native functionality. Hydrolysis performances of selected enzymes towards WPI were significantly promoted by high-pressure. Interestingly, a clear synergistic effect of α-chymotrypsin and bromelain combination on the WPI hydrolysis yield was detected, which resulted in the highest protein rupture (DH = 17%)

Transcriptome analyses identify five transcription factors differentially expressed in the hypothalamus of post-versus prepubertal Brahman heifers
Puberty onset is a developmental process influenced by genetic determinants, environment, and nutrition. Mutations and regulatory gene networks constitute the molecular basis for the genetic determinants of puberty onset. The emerging knowledge of these genetic determinants presents opportunities for innovation in the breeding of early pubertal cattle. This paper presents new data on hypothalamic gene expression related to puberty in Bos indicus (Brahman) in age-and weight-matched heifers. Six postpubertal heifers were compared with 6 prepubertal heifers using whole-genome RNA sequencing methodology for quantification of global gene expression in the hypothalamus. Five transcription factors (TF) with potential regulatory roles in the hypothalamus were identified in this experiment: E2F8, NFAT5, SIX5, ZBTB38, and ZNF605. These TF genes were significantly differentially expressed in the hypothalamus of postpubertal versus prepubertal heifers and were also identified as significant according to the applied regulatory impact factor metric (P < 0.05). Two of these 5 TF, ZBTB38 and ZNF605, were zinc fingers, belonging to a gene family previously reported to have a central regulatory role in mammalian puberty. The SIX5 gene belongs to the family of homologues of Drosophila sine oculis (SIX) genes implicated in transcriptional regulation of gonadotrope gene expression. Tumor-related genes such as E2F8 and NFAT5 are known to affect basic cellular processes that are relevant in both cancer and developmental processes. Mutations in NFAT5 were associated with puberty in humans. Mutations in these TF, together with other genetic determinants previously discovered, could be used in genomic selection to predict the genetic merit of cattle (i.e., the likelihood of the offspring presenting earlier than average puberty for Brahman). Knowledge of key mutations involved in genetic traits is an advantage for genomic prediction because it can increase its accuracy
