Reversibility of brain-stem evoked potential abnormalities in abstinent chronic alcoholics: one year follow-up

Brain-stem auditory evoked potentials (BAEPs) were studied in 34 chronic alcoholics who had been abstinent for 1 year, and in age- and sex-matched control subjects. The patients were examined 3 times, at 1 month, 5 months and 1 year after the start of the abstinence treatment. At 1 month of abstinence the alcoholics showed differences with respect to controls in the peak V latency (P < 0.01), and in the III–V (p < 0.01) and I–V (p < 0.01) intervals. After 1 year of abstinence a significant improvement in the V (p < 0.01), III–V (p < 0.01) and I–V (p < 0.01) parameters was recorded. The most notable development was in the 5–12 month period, with shortening i latency (p < 0.01) and in the I–V interval (p < 0.01); in the first 5 months there was only shortening in the III–V interval (p < 0.01). This improvement was also indicated by a decrease in the number of patients with BAEP parameter abnormalities. The recovery of the functions impaired by chronic alcohol consumption after 1 year of abstinence was incomplete, although the tendency was towards normalizationThis work was partially supported by Grant PM91-0159-C02- 01/02 from the Spanish Dirección General de Investigación Científica y Técnica (Ministerio de Educación y Ciencia)S

Impacts of Use and Abuse of Nature in Catalonia with Proposals for Sustainable Management

This paper provides an overview of the last 40 years of use, and in many cases abuse, of the natural resources in Catalonia, a country that is representative of European countries in general, and especially those in the Mediterranean region. It analyses the use of natural resources made by mining, agriculture, livestock, logging, fishing, nature tourism, and energy production and consumption. This use results in an ecological footprint, i.e., the productive land and sea surface required to generate the consumed resources and absorb the resulting waste, which is about seven times the amount available, a very high number but very similar to other European countries. This overexploitation of natural resources has a huge impact on land and its different forms of cover, air, and water. For the last 25 years, forests and urban areas have each gained almost 3% more of the territory at the expense of agricultural land; those municipalities bordering the sea have increased their number of inhabitants and activity, and although they only occupy 6.7% of the total surface area, they account for 43.3% of the population; air quality has stabilized since the turn of the century, and there has been some improvement in the state of aquatic ecosystems, but still only 36% are in good condition, while the remainder have suffered morphological changes and different forms of nonpoint source pollution; meanwhile the biodiversity of flora and fauna remains still under threat. Environmental policies do not go far enough so there is a need for revision of the legislation related to environmental impact and the protection of natural areas, flora, and fauna. The promotion of environmental research must be accompanied by environmental education to foster a society which is Land 2021, 10, 144 3 of 53 more knowledgeable, has more control and influence over the decisions that deeply affect it. Indeed, nature conservation goes hand in hand with other social and economic challenges that require a more sustainable vision. Today’s problems with nature derive from the current economic model, which is environmentally unsustainable in that it does not take into account environmental impacts. Lastly, we propose a series of reasonable and feasible priority measures and actions related to each use made of the country’s natural resources, to the impacts they have had, and to their management, in the hope that these can contribute to improving the conservation and management of the environment and biodiversity and move towards sustainability.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Estudio de la reversibilidad de las alteraciones del sistema nervioso en alcohólicos crónicos abstinentes mediante potenciales evocados

    No full text
A one year follow-up study was performed on 50 abstinent chronic alcoholic patients. Three different kinds of evoked potentials were used: Short and Long Latency Auditory Evoked Potentials (BAEPs and LAEPs) and Visual Evoked Potentials (VEPs). Our aim was to evaluate the possible reversibility of the abnormalities that are provoked by the chronic alcohol intake in the nervous system. After one month of abstinence the patients show some abnormalities in several EPs parameters. After one year, LAPEs P3 latency and N1-P2 amplitude and BAEPs peak V latency become normals. During this first year, a partial improvement of these functional abnormalities has been observed, and the degree of improvement depends on the neural system explored.S

    No full text

Biomarkers expression in benign breast diseases and risk of subsequent breast cancer : a case-control study

Women with benign breast diseases (BBD) have a high risk of breast cancer. However, no biomarkers have been clearly established to predict cancer in these women. Our aim was to explore whether estrogen receptor (ER), progesterone receptor (PR), and Ki67 expression stratify risk of breast cancer in screened women with BBD. We conducted a nested case-control study. Women with breast cancer and prior BBDs (86 cases) were matched to women with prior BBDs who were free from breast cancer (172 controls). The matching factors were age at BBD diagnosis, type of BBD, and follow-up time since BBD diagnosis. ER, PR, and Ki67 expression were obtained from BBDs' specimens. Conditional logistic regression was used to estimate odds ratios (ORs), and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) of breast cancer risk according to ER, PR, and Ki67 expression. Women wit
