    Initiation of hydrogen induced cracks at secondary phase particles

    The goal of this work is to propose a general mechanism for hydrogen induced crack initiation in steels based on a microstructural study of multiple steel grades. Four types of steels with strongly varying microstructures are studied for this purpose, i.e. ultra low carbon (ULC) steel, TRIP (transformation induced plasticity) steel, Fe-C-Ti generic alloy, and pressure vessel steel. A strong dependency of the initiation of hydrogen induced cracks on the microstructural features in the materials is observed. By use of SEM-EBSD characterization, initiation is found to always occur at the hard secondary phase particles in the materials

    The role of titanium and vanadium based precipitates on hydrogen induced degradation of ferritic materials

    The hydrogen induced damage of generic Fe-C-Ti and Fe-C-V ferritic alloys was investigated to assess the influence of precipitates on the hydrogen sensitivity of a material. The precipitates, formed during heat treatment, were evaluated by scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM). The hydrogen/material interaction was evaluated by: 1) melt and hot extraction to determine the total and diffusible hydrogen content, respectively, 2) permeation experiments to calculate the diffusion coefficient, 3) thermal desorption spectroscopy to determine the hydrogen trapping characteristics of the materials. Furthermore, two different types of hydrogen induced damage were evaluated, i.e. hydrogen assisted cracking and blistering, resulting from electrochemical hydrogen charging with and without the application of an external load, respectively. Evaluation of the hydrogen induced damage and the role of the precipitates was performed by combining optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD). An important though divertive role of diffusible hydrogen is observed in both damage mechanisms for the investigated microstructures. On the one hand, a large amount of diffusible hydrogen compared to strongly trapped hydrogen promotes hydrogen assisted cracking of materials, while on the other hand, the blistering phenomenon is delayed under such conditions

    Characterizing the Robustness of Wi-Fi and Bluetooth against CW EM Disturbances inside a Reverberation Chamber

    This paper describes a detailed test setup and procedure to characterize the robustness of Wi-Fi3 and Bluetooth 4.2 against continuous wave electromagnetic disturbances inside a reverberation chamber. Bluetooth 4.2 robustness was also characterized by continuous broadband noise. These experiments aim to reveal the susceptibility of commonly used wireless communication protocols against continuous wave noise. Results show that Wi-Fi3 has an abrupt rise in the packet error rate (up to ≈ 100%) when the continuous wave noise overlaps with the WiFi3 working frequency. Bluetooth 4.2 is robust against continuous wave noise, thanks to the frequency hopping technique, but fails against broadband nois

    Cadmium-Related Mortality and Long-Term Secular Trends in the Cadmium Body Burden of an Environmentally Exposed Population

    BACKGROUND: Few population studies have reported on the long-term changes in the internal cadmium dose and simultaneously occurring mortality. OBJECTIVE: We monitored blood cadmium (BCd), 24-hr urinary cadmium (UCd), and mortality in an environmentally exposed population. METHODS: Starting from 1985, we followed BCd (until 2003), UCd (until 1996), and mortality (until 2007) among 476 and 480 subjects, randomly recruited from low- exposure areas (LEA) and high-exposure areas (HEA). The last cadmium-producing plant in the HEA closed in 2002. RESULTS: From 1985-1989 to 1991-1996, BCd decreased by 40.3% and 18.9% in the LEA and HEA, respectively (p < 0.0001 for between-area difference). From 1991-1996 until 2001-2003, BCd remained unchanged in the HEA (+ 1.8%) and increased by 19.7% in the LEA (p < 0.0001). Over the entire follow-up period, the annual decrease in BCd averaged 2.7% in the LEA (n = 258) and 1.8% in the HEA (n = 203). From 1985-1989 to 1991-1996, UCd fell by 12.9% in the LEA and by 16.6% in the HEA (p = 0.22), with mean annual decreases of 2.7% (n = 366) and 3.4% (n = 364). Over 20.3 years (median), 206 deaths (21.5%) occurred. At baseline, BCd (14.6 vs. 10.2 nmol/L) and UCd (14.1 vs. 8.6 nmol/24-hr) were higher in deaths than in survivors. The risks (p <= 0.04) associated with a doubling of baseline UCd were 20% and 44% for total and noncardiovascular mortality, and 25% and 33% for a doubling of BCd. CONCLUSIONS: Even if zinc-cadmium smelters close, historical environmental contamination remains a persistent source of exposure. Environmental exposure to cadmium increases total and noncardiovascular mortality in a continuous fashion without threshold

    Expanding the importance of HMERF titinopathy : new mutations and clinical aspects

    ObjectiveHereditary myopathy with early respiratory failure (HMERF) is caused by titin A-band mutations in exon 344 and considered quite rare. Respiratory insufficiency is an early symptom. A collection of families and patients with muscle disease suggestive of HMERF was clinically and genetically studied.MethodsAltogether 12 new families with 19 affected patients and diverse nationalities were studied. Most of the patients were investigated using targeted next-generation sequencing; Sanger sequencing was applied in some of the patients and available family members. Histological data and muscle MRI findings were evaluated.ResultsThree families had several family members studied while the rest were single patients. Most patients had distal and proximal muscle weakness together with respiratory insufficiency. Five heterozygous TTN A-band mutations were identified of which two were novel. Also with the novel mutations the muscle pathology and imaging findings were compatible with the previous reports of HMERF.ConclusionsOur collection of 12 new families expands mutational spectrum with two new mutations identified. HMERF is not that rare and can be found worldwide, but maybe underdiagnosed. Diagnostic process seems to be complex as this study shows with mostly single patients without clear dominant family history.Peer reviewe
