Assisting therapists in assessing small animal phobias by computer analysis of video-recorded sessions

Behavioural Avoidance Tests (BATs) are commonly used for assessing phobias. While easy to deploy, these tests have some practical difficulties. For instance, therapists have to make distance estimations that are hard to do with accuracy and objectivity; or information regarding the performance of the patients (e.g. their walking pattern) is lost. To alleviate these difficulties, a computerized tool has been developed to extract the walking pattern of patients while approaching the phobic stimulus. From a video-recorded BAT session, two visual representations have been explored to compactly summarize the patient’s behavior: a static one (an image) and a dynamic one (an animation). A proof-of-concept prototype has been tested with 23 therapists. Most of the therapists preferred the animated representation, since it provides them with a better sense of the dynamics of how the patient really behaved. The participants agreed that this tool might be useful in assisting therapist when assessing phobia through BATs, since diagnostics could be made in a more accurate and objective way. This work has been partly supported by Fundació Caixa-Castelló (through grant P1-1A2010-11) and Generalitat Valenciana (through grant PROMETEOII2014062)

Integration of Static and Self-motion-Based Depth Cues for Efficient Reaching and Locomotor Actions

    Get PDF
The common approach to estimate the distance of an object in computer vision and robotics is to use stereo vision. Stereopsis, however, provides good estimates only within near space and thus is more suitable for reaching actions. In order to successfully plan and execute an action in far space, other depth cues must be taken into account. Self-body movements, such as head and eye movements or locomotion can provide rich information of depth. This paper proposes a model for integration of static and self-motion-based depth cues for a humanoid robot. Our results show that self-motion-based visual cues improve the accuracy of distance perception and combined with other depth cues provide the robot with a robust distance estimator suitable for both reaching and walking actions

Preliminary data on the culture of juveniles of the dusky grouper, Epinephelus marginatus (Lowe, 1834)

This study shows preliminary data about the culture of juvenile dusky grouper, Epinephelus marginatus. Twoexperiments were carried out to determine the effects of three salinity levels (35, 27 and 20 psu) and twodifferent temperatures (20 and 26 ºC) on the growth, survival, and feeding parameters of fish raised in concrete tanks. Also, growth, feeding efficiency and biometry was studied for seven grams juveniles in a 15 month trials. Results indicated that fish maintained at a salinity of 35 psu grew faster than fish at 20 and 27 psu, and significant differences in weight gain, feed conversion ratio, protein efficiency ratio, specific growth rate, and survival were obtained between these treatments. Best growth and better feeding parameters were obtained for fish at high temperature. Significant differences in feed conversion ratio, protein efficiency ratio and specific growth rate were obtained between temperature treatments. At the end of the experimental procedure the final mean weight was 458 g in 15 months. Mean weight gain was 451 g and the feed conversion ratio was 1.23. This study also demonstrated a faster growth in culture conditions than in the wild. The results obtained were courageous and could be the basis of further studies for the culture of this species

However, the nonlinear parameterization is an intrinsic characteristic in the fuel cell models such that classical parameter estimation schemes developed for linearly parameterized systems cannot be applied. In this paper, an alternative framework of adaptive parameter estimation is designed to address the real-time parameter estimation for fuel cell systems. The parameter estimation can be divided into two cascaded components. First, the dynamics with the unknown parameters are estimated by a new unknown system dynamics estimator (USDE). Inspired by an invariant manifold, this USDE is designed by applying simple filter operations such that the information of the state derivative is not required. Secondly, an adaptive law driven by the function approximation error is proposed for recovering unknown model parameters. Exponential convergence of the estimated parameters to the true values can be proved under the monotonicity condition. Finally, experimental results on a practical proton exchange membrane fuel cell system are given to verify the effectiveness of the proposed schemes.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft

Food habits of groupers Epinephelus marginatus (Lowe, 1834) and Epinephelus costae (Steindachner, 1878) in the Mediterranean Coast of Spain

Stomach contents of Epinephelus marginatus were analyzed to determine their food habits and the relationship with the predator size. Also, the food habits of Epinephelus costae were studied and results obtained for both species were compared according to the ecological categories of preys found in the stomach contents, percentage number (N%) and frequency of occurrence (F%). Results revealed that fishes (33.3%), crustaceans (30.1%) and mollusks (36.6%) were the main preys consumed by E. marginatus. The main prey consumed by Epinephelus costae was fishes (97.1%) and mollusks (2.9%) were occasionally found inside their stomachs. Comparison of ecological categories of prey for both species indicated that E. marginatus fed on benthonic species and E. costae on pelagic species. The relation between diet and size of E. marginatus is discussed in the text
