Effectiveness of the computerization of a YALE insulin infusion modified protocol in reducing the nursing workload in an Internal Medicine Department
Hyperglycemia is a negative prognostic factor in both critical and non-critical patients. Many critically ill patients admitted to internal medicine wards present hyperglycemia and may benefit from an IV insulin therapy. The Yale Insulin Infusion Protocol (YIIP) is effective and safe in achieving the desired glucose range. However, to be used properly and safely, it requires a considerable availability of nursing resources. This probably represents the main limiting factor in using these protocols outside intensive care units. This study was performed to assess the effectiveness of a computer application which reduces the nursing workload related to managing a nurse implemented modified YIIP in our internal medicine department. Our experience showed that computerizing the YIIP algorithm is safe and effective. It leads on average to a net 30-min nursing time saving per day per patient

Multidisciplinary Investigations on the Byzantine Oratory of the Catacombs of Saint Lucia in Syracuse
This paper presents the outcomes of a multidisciplinary study conducted on the fresco palimpsest of the byzantine oratory (region C) of the Catacombs of Saint Lucia in Syracuse. The 3D model was integrated with data from investigations made with portable X-ray Fluorescence
Spectroscopy (pXRF), and Technical Photography (TP), in
order to obtain a unified representation of the knowledge
acquired. The different layers of the frescoes present in the palimpsest could then be individually identified and
characterized using the data extracted from the model. The arcosolium examined here is an illustrative case study characterized by clear artistic and archaeological
stratifications

Curvature of the Lanthanide Contraction: An Explanation
A number of studies have shown that for isostructural series of the lanthanides (elements La through Lu), a plot of equivalent metal-ligand bond lengths versus atomic number differs significantly from linearity and can be better fit as a quadratic equation. However, for hydrogen type wave functions, it is the inverse of the average distance of the electron from the nucleus (an estimate of size) that varies linearly with effective nuclear charge. This generates an apparent quadratic dependence of radius with atomic number. Plotting the inverse of lanthanide ion radii (the observed distance minus the ligand size) as a function of effective nuclear charge gives very good linear fits for a variety of lanthanide complexes and materials. Parameters obtained from this fit are in excellent agreement with the calculated Slater shielding constant, k
