Dynamic layout algorithms for wireless field hockey strategy system

    Get PDF
Sensor deployment in the field of sports is providing enormous potential for elevating the playing field standards. This paper presents an enhanced localization algorithm which harnesses the dynamic and reconfiguration attributes of field hockey players on a strategy board; known as the Wireless Field Hockey Strategy System (WiHoc Ver1.0). The proposed algorithm utilized for determining the location of field hockey players overcomes the constraints and confined anchor based WiHoc Ver 1.0. The resolution encompasses the new versatile platform which captures the positional location within the parameters of a hockey pitch and of cooperative nodes to determine the optimal location of anchor positioning to ensure that the achieved accuracy of localization is enhanced. The proposed algorithm was evaluated extensively through discrete - event simulations. The acquired results via the accuracy performance metrics validated the enhanced ability of the proposed algorithm

Open Partial Nephrectomy in the Management of Small Renal Masses

    Get PDF
Introduction. Most of the kidney masses are being detected incidentally with smaller size due to widespread use of imaging modalities leading to increased RCC incidence worldwide with an earlier stage. This article reviews the role of open partial nephrectomy (PN) in the management of small renal masses. Material and Methods. Review of the English literature using MEDLINE has been performed between 1963–2008 on small renal masses, partial nephrectomy, kidney cancer, nephron sparing surgery (NSS), radical nephrectomy, laparoscopy, and surgical management. Special emphasis was given on the indications of NSS, oncological outcomes and comparison with open and laparoscopic PN. Results. Overall 68 articles including 31 review papers, 35 human clinical papers, 1 book chapter, and 1 animal research study were selected for the purpose of this article and were reviewed by the authors. Conclusions. Currently, open NSS still remains as the gold standard surgical treatment modality in patients with small renal masses

Surgery is the only effective method for the treatment of localized renal cell carcinoma (RCC). Today nephron sparing surgery (NSS) cures the majority of patients with early stage disease. Open radical nephrectomy (RN) is performed mainly in patients with large tumors and in cases complicated by the tumor thrombus extension into the vena cava. Laparoscopy is now more and more often used for RCC treatment. Laparoscopic RN (LRN) is now recommended for the treatment of early stage RCC, when NSS cannot be used. LRN seems to provide longterm cancer control comparable to open RN. RCC is now often diagnosed when the tumors are still small and can be often cured by NSS providing excellent local cancer control. Tumor size, location, multiple foci, surgical margin, and pathological variants are significant for cancer outcome in selective NSS. Laparoscopic partial nephrectomy (LPN) is now gaining popularity as an effective minimally invasive treatment in patients with relatively small and peripheral renal tumors. Recently minimally invasive ablative techniques were introduced for the treatment of RCC. These methods involve little complications if used for the treatment of small renal tumors. The currently used best therapy for metastatic RCC is inadequate and surgery is an important component of combined treatment including immunochemotherapy. Combinations of interferon-alpha, interleukin-2, and 5-fluorouracyl are now used for the treatment of metastatic RCC. Nephrectomy can be recommended for patients with good performance status before immunotherapy. Modern research is focused on identification of novel agents and treatment modalities with better antitumor activity.

Comparing Rawlsian Justice and the Capabilities Approach to Justice from a Spiritually Sensitive Social Work Perspective

‘This is an electronic version of an article published in the March, 2012 special issue of the Journal of Religion and Spirituality and Social Work entitled Spirituality and Social Justice volume 31, (1-2), pp. 9-31. It is available online at http://dx.doi.org/10.1080/15426432.2012.647874This article examines two social justice theories, Rawlsian Justice and the Capabilities Approach of Sen and Nussbaum, in relation to congruence with four principles of spiritually sensitive social work. We find that although Rawlsian justice has valuable insights, it has some gaps for promoting spiritually sensitive practice. In contrast, the Capabilities Approach bears more promise for promoting spiritually sensitive social work as it meets all these ethical principles. Scholars could build on its insights to articulate a vision for spiritually sensitive social justice that can guide our profession’s approaches to macro practice and social polic

MOLUSCOS DE LA CUENCA DEL RÍO PUNTA GORDA, CARIBE SUR, NICARAGUA, CENTROAMÉRICA

This study is an initial evaluation of mollusk biodiversity in the Punta Gorda River basin, during both the 2013 rainy season and the 2014 dry season at eight locations of land, fluvial and coastal habitats. A total of 127 species were collected (62 terrestrials, 18 fluvial and 47 coastal). Field specimens in good part, mostly Mesoamerican endemics, show preference for undisturbed areas. Freshwater species located in swamps or temporarily flooded terrain, are in risk of disappearing due to actual land use.  More research must be given to coastal mollusks on account of their ancestral alimentary value for the Rama communities established along the South Caribbean shore.

Sugar bislactones by one-step oxidative dimerisation with pyridinium chlorochromate versus regioselective oxidation of vicinal diols

    Get PDF
Synthesis of 10-membered bislactones by PCC oxidation of methyl 2,6-di-O-pivaloyl-α-D-glucopyranoside and methyl 4,6-O-benzylidene-α-D-glucopyranoside is described, with emphasis on their structure elucidation using the information gained by combination of NMR spectroscopic techniques with X-ray diffraction data. In alternative, the use of PCC and PCC adsorbed on silica gel or alumina for the regioselective oxidation of vicinal diols in sugars is also reported. Both bislactones showed antifungal activity against Candida albicans, and were slightly active against the bacteria Bacillus subtilis. The bislactone presenting pivaloyl protecting groups also promoted some growth inhibition of Staphylococcus aureus.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

“Ghosts from the past”: The re-emergence of internalised religious stigma following diagnosis of HIV among Northern Irish gay men

    Get PDF
This paper explores how previous exposure to religious homo-negativity features in the sense making process following HIV diagnosis in a homogenous sample of six gay men living in Northern Ireland. Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis was used to identify two key overarching themes: ‘Negotiating authenticity in unsafe space’ which relates to the experience of negotiating same sex attraction within religious environments and ‘Re-emergence of religious shame in diagnosis’ which relates to the way in which the men made sense of diagnosis from the position of having been exposed to religious homo-negativity earlier in their lives. Findings demonstrate how the men negotiated their sexual orientation within religious contexts and how a reconstruction of God was necessary to preserve an authentic sense of self. Despite reaching reconciliation, HIV was initially appraised within a retributive religious framework that served to temporarily reinforce previously learned shame-based models of understanding this aspect of the self
