    Digital Flourishing: Conceptualizing and Assessing Positive Perceptions of Mediated Social Interactions

    Recent research started to apply concepts of well-being to the context of computer mediated communication (e.g., social media, instant messaging). While much research investigates negative perceptions of mediated social interactions (e.g., “problematic” or “addictive” social media use), a multi-dimensional measure that taps into users? positive perceptions is sorely lacking. The present research therefore develops the first comprehensive measure of digital flourishing, defined as positive perceptions of mediated social interactions. Building on a qualitative pre-study that aided the construction of the Digital Flourishing Scale (DFS), Study 1 (N = 474) employed exploratory factor analysis to reveal five subdimensions of digital flourishing. The preregistered Study 2 (N = 438) confirmed these five dimensions, yielding five reliable items per subscale and initial construct validity with three psychological needs from self-determination theory (SDT; competence, autonomy, relatedness) which were used as an underlying well-being framework for the development of the DFS. The preregistered Study 3 generated further construct validity by directly relating DFS to well-being. The scale is relevant for researchers and practitioners alike to better understand how users perceive their mediated interactions to impact mental health and well-being

    What professional language do you speak? Exploring inter-disciplinary communication with nursing and social work students via SADRAS Project initiative

    The inter-disciplinary learning project invited undergraduate adult nursing and social work students from a London university to take part in a research activity focusing on communication between the two disciplines. The project aimed to provide a direct contribution to the students’ retention and progression, and to enhance students understanding of inter-disciplinary working at early stages of their professional careers. Students were observed during a table-top exercise in which they jointly worked on deciding priorities of care for a complex family situation. They reflected on the activity afterwards, sharing an interesting outlook on their interactions. The project confirmed the significance of inter-disciplinary learning and teaching. Most importantly however, it recognised that effective, collaborative inter-disciplinary working requires time to develop, maintain and grow. The study demonstrated that we do not all speak the same professional language. It emphasised the need for sustainable longitudinal approach with opportunities for inter-professional interactions and collaborative learning and teaching.  The purpose of this paper is to reflect on the project findings with a brief consideration of its impact.  While contemplating ‘professional language’ relevant to each discipline, we aim to revisit conversation on teaching and learning for inter-disciplinary communication in the Higher Education setting.       Keywords: inter-disciplinary communication, interprofessionality, nursing and social work students, interprofessional working &nbsp

    Vitamin D status in post-medieval Northern England: Insights from dental histology and enamel peptide analysis at Coach Lane, North Shields (AD 1711–1857)

    Objectives: The post-medieval period in Europe saw a dramatic increase in metabolic bone disease related to vitamin D deficiency (VDD). Recent paleopathological work has utilized interglobular dentin (IGD) as a proxy for poor vitamin D status during development, while enamel peptide analysis allows the identification of chromosomal sex in non-adult remains. Here we explore the relationship between sex, the presence of IGD, and macroscopic markers of VDD in an industrial era assemblage from Northeast England. Materials and methods: 25 individuals (9 females, 9 males, 9 unknown sex) from the cemetery site at Coach Lane, North Shields (1711–1857) were selected for paleopathological analysis, histological assessment of IGD, and enamel peptide determination of chromosomal sex. Results: Ground tooth sections from 21 individuals were of suitable quality for detection of IGD, and enamel peptide analysis confirmed the chromosomal sex of ten individuals. Sixteen individuals (76.1%) exhibited ≄1 episode of IGD. Nine of these (42.8%) exhibited >1 episode and four (19%) exhibited ≄4 episodes in regular intervals. Male sex was significantly associated with the presence of IGD (p = 0.0351; 100% males vs. 54.5% females). Females were more likely to exhibit macroscopic evidence of VDD (45.5% females vs 30% males) but this was not statistically significant. Discussion and conclusions: Periods of poor mineral metabolism during childhood appear much more prevalent at Coach Lane than macroscopic evidence suggests. Evidence of seasonal IGD episodes indicates that northern latitude played a major role in poor VD status in the Northeast of England. The significant association of IGD with male sex may be due to sex-related differences in dentinal mineralization or a higher risk of poor VD status in males aged <5 years. More work is needed to establish an evidence-based threshold for pathological levels of IGD before the presence of this feature can confidently be used as a biomarker for poor VD status

    A novel method to measure rim deformation in UHMWPE acetabular liners

    Fluoroscopy studies of total hip replacement (THR) have shown that the femoral head and acetabular cup can separate in vivo, causing edge loading on the rim of the cup. Pre-clinical testing of THR involves ISO standard motion and loading parameters that are representative of a standard walking gait. However, a requirement for more robust testing of THR has been identified and protocols for edge loading in hip simulators have been developed. This technical note describes a method to measure rim wear and deformation on ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene acetabular liners using 2D contacting profilometry and MatlabÂź analysis. The method is demonstrated on liners that have been subjected to edge loading in hip simulator tests and that have been retrieved at revision surgery. A quantitative and qualitative evaluation of the rim deformation was performed with good repeatability using the method

    Background Findings from the RESTART trial suggest that starting antiplatelet therapy might reduce the risk of recurrent symptomatic intracerebral haemorrhage compared with avoiding antiplatelet therapy. Brain imaging features of intracerebral haemorrhage and cerebral small vessel diseases (such as cerebral microbleeds) are associated with greater risks of recurrent intracerebral haemorrhage.
