The evaluation of evaporation by infrared thermography: A critical analysis of the measurements on the Crau test site
Evapotranspiration was calculated for both the dry and irrigated zone by four methods which were compared with the energy balance method serving as a reference. Two methods did not involve the surface temperature. They are ETR(n) = R(n), liable to be valid under wet conditions and ET(eq) = (delta/delta + gamma) R(n) i.e, the first term of Penman's equation, adapted to moderately dry conditions. The methods using surface temperature were the combined energy balance aerodynamic approach and a simplified approach proposed by Jackson et al. Tests show the surface temperature methods give relatively satisfactory results both in the dry and wet zone, with a precision of 10% to 15% compared with the reference method. As was to be expected, ET(eq) gave satisfactory results only in the dry zone and ET(Rn) in the irrigated zone. Thermography increased the precision in the estimate of ET relative to the most suitable classical method by 5% to 8% and is equally suitable for both dry and wet conditions. The Jackson method does not require extensive ground measurements and the evaluation of the surface roughness

National audienceDans le cadre des recherches sur les dynamiques de peuplement dans la basse vallée de la Cèze, le sondage réalisé dans cette structure en bordure orientale de l'oppidum du Camp de César à Laudun-l'Ardoise (Gard), a permis d'établir sa construction au cours du Ier siècle de notre ère et de sa réfection au cours des Ve-VIe siècles. L'abondance de mobilier céramique tardo-républicain, et du Haut-Empire, au sein du bâti ou en stratigraphie, ne permettent pas de dater exclusivement cette structure de l'Antiquité tardive, bien que les couches tardo-antiques directement au contact de l'affleurement rocheux, sont un terminus post quem recevable pour la datation de la réfection du bâtiment. Il semble qu'au cours des Ve-VIe siècles de nouveaux constructeurs ont procédé à des terrassements mettant à jour les maçonneries préexistantes du Ier siècle, qui ont alors été réutilisées
Organic farming and climate change: major conclusions of the Clermont-Ferrand seminar (2008)
This seminar confirmed that less greenhouse gas (GHG) is emitted per unit area under organic agriculture than under conventional agriculture, and that our eating patterns have a strong impact on factors involved in climate change. Moreover, it shed new light on and contributed original information to a variety of fields. The two major advantages of organic farming in terms of the mitigation of GHG emissions are its ability to store carbon in the ground and the non-use of synthetic nitrogen fertilisers. Means for improving practices and research priorities were identified

OMEGAPIX: 3D integrated circuit prototype dedicated to the ATLAS upgrade Super LHC pixel project
In late 2008, an international consortium for development of vertically integrated (3D) readout electronics was created to explore features available from this technology. In this paper, the OMEGAPIX circuit is presented. It is the first front-end ASIC prototype designed at LAL in 3D technology. It has been submitted on May 2009. Hadron beam test of a scintillating fibre tracker system for elastic scattering and luminosity measurement in ATLAS
A scintillating fibre tracker is proposed to measure elastic proton
scattering at very small angles in the ATLAS experiment at CERN. The tracker
will be located in so-called Roman Pot units at a distance of 240 m on each
side of the ATLAS interaction point. An initial validation of the design
choices was achieved in a beam test at DESY in a relatively low energy electron
beam and using slow off-the-shelf electronics. Here we report on the results
from a second beam test experiment carried out at CERN, where new detector
prototypes were tested in a high energy hadron beam, using the first version of
the custom designed front-end electronics. The results show an adequate
tracking performance under conditions which are similar to the situation at the
LHC. In addition, the alignment method using so-called overlap detectors was

Cavity QED with Diamond Nanocrystals and Silica Microspheres
Normal mode splitting is observed in a cavity QED system, in which nitrogen
vacancy centers in diamond nanocrystals are coupled to whispering gallery modes
in a silica microsphere. The composite nanocrystal-microsphere system takes
advantage of the exceptional spin properties of nitrogen vacancy centers as
well as the ultra high quality factor of silica microspheres. The observation
of the normal mode splitting indicates that the dipole optical interaction
between the relevant nitrogen vacancy center and whispering gallery mode has
reached the strong coupling regime of cavity QED
