The influence of sociability over non-mortgage debt

    Get PDF
In recent years, especially after the recent economic downturn, household debt has increased in importance, due to its influence on the economy in general and on households’ wellbeing in particular. Therefore, the study of household debt turns out to be necessary in order to know what leads to its demand, and thus to avoid situations of over-indebtedness. In this regard, previous research has analysed debt decisions from different approaches, however, the effect of individuals’ sociability has been neglected in literature. To this end, the aim of this paper is to analyse the effect of sociability on the Europeans’ decision to incur non-mortgage debt. The study sample, taken from the sixth wave (year 2015) of the Survey of Health, Ageing and Retirement in Europe, consists of 68,231 people from 18 European countries and also Israel. After applying probit binomial models, empirical evidence confirms the non-negligible effect of sociability on households’ non-mortgage debts. However, this effect depends on the underlying mechanisms through which sociability operates. Thus, when the sociability variable reflects learning based on the transmission of information (or 'word of mouth'), its influence over non-mortgage debt is positive, whereas when sociability reflects learning based on observation, the effect is negativeS

Does self-control constitute a driver of millennials’ financial behaviors and attitudes?

[Abstract] Millennials are currently facing particular financial challenges that will condition the future financial well-being of the society as a whole, and the decision-making process happening in worse circumstances than those of preceding generations. However, few studies to date have deeply analyzed millennials’ financial behaviors, and particularly, how self-control operationalizes their financial choices. Using data from the 2017 Survey of Financial Competences of Spanish individuals, this paper analyzes how self-control influences different financial behaviors and attitudes and whether this effect differs between millennials and older generations. The results indicate that self-control does influence the individuals’ financial attitudes regardless of generation, whereas in the case of financial behaviors, only those millennials exhibiting the highest levels of self-control are affected by it when deciding on a saving account or a personal loan. These outcomes have numerous significant implications, in addition to providing recommendations to policy makers aimed at engaging millennials in healthier financial behaviors

Self-control and debt decisions relationship: evidence for different credit options

In recent years, households have become increasingly indebted, which constitutes a matter of concern. Based on a sample from the Spanish Survey of Financial Competences, this paper examines the relationship between self-control and consumer borrowing behaviour and, in so doing, it proposes a new multi-item scale of individual’s self-control in financial matters and considers several types of consumer debt, thus overcoming the main gaps identified in previous research. Empirical evidence reveals that, overall, self-control problems lead to more indebtedness. However, comprehensive analyses have demonstrated that the influence of self-control differs across an exhaustive range of credit options. In this regard, the lack of self-control increases the probability of taking out unsecured personal loans, loans from family or friends, and credit card use. Evidence suggests that individuals’ first impulse leads them to ask their social circle for a loan. Overall, individuals might be tempted to get indebted when they cannot make ends meet. However, this first impulse usually faces barriers from the supply perspective, so the evidence suggests that the effect of self-control on borrowing decisions might be shaped not only by the demand side of credit but also by the supply oneOpen Access funding provided thanks to the CRUE-CSIC agreement with Springer NatureS

Producción CientíficaTwo new polymer-based stationary phases; DCpak PBT (poly(butylene terephthalate)) and DCpak P4VP(poly(4-vinylpirydine)) were evaluated for the analysis of polyphenols using supercritical fluid chro-matography (SFC). The compounds studied included phenolic acids and flavonoids. The different variablesthat influence the chromatographic separation, such as type and percentage of organic modifier, additive, pressure and temperature were examined. Using the DCpak P4VP column the retention was exception-ally high, obtaining better results with the DCpak PBT column. The separation of nine polyphenols wasachieved using a gradient of modifier (methanol with 0.1% trifluoroacetic acid) from 5 to 50%, a pressureof 150 bar, a temperature of 35◦C and a flow-rate of 2 mL/min. The use of additives was necessary in orderto obtain good peak shapes and efficiencies, achieving the best results with trifluoroacetic acid. LODs andLOQs values were lower than 5 g/mL in all the cases; meanwhile, the %RSD values for method repeatabil-ity and inter-day reproducibility were lower than 3% and 10% respectively. Finally, the proposed methodwas successfully applied to the analysis of polyphenols in commercial bee pollen; four compounds, namely cinnamic acid, p-coumaric acid, catechin and quercetin were identified and quantified

The quality of medical care has been given increased attention in recent years, not only in its scientific and technical version but in the human relationships. Doctors have focused on the latter aspect but few studies have been done in this area about physiotherapists communications and relationships. The results point out that communications and relationships between physiotherapists and patients can be improved. This relationship begins in the clinical interview which is framed in a context or environment That has to be favourable for its development. Inside the context it is necessary to pay attention to the professional image, room distribution, body language and paralinguistic. The aim of the focus on these components is to make easier the clinical interview, and finally an improvement of the clinical interview

This research focuses its goals on locating the consequences of Law implementation 26657 in Mental Health within the area of addictions. Its specific goals are to relieve the impact on effectors of Law (mental health professionals, judicial professionals and officials) and provide theoretical and methodological contents to training skills of students and graduates. To relieve this first objective, professionals of Buenos Aires city and its south suburbs area were interviewed. Interviews and surveys were the methodological tools applied. The following conclusions were reached: Most respondents agree on the theoretical concept of addiction as a mental suffering, considering it as a progress introduced by the law. They also agree that the new interventions coexist with old stigmatizing practices. They justify this scenario as aprocess of adaptation that requires cultural changes and professional paradigms. They point out the social inclusion of the most vulnerable groups as the direction of the treatment and the need forinter-sectoriality together with inter-discipline. It insists on the insufficient adequacy of existing resources to new practices derived from Law 26657. This situation added to the resistance from certain actors to take responsibilities and give positions of power become the two main difficulties. Considering the incipient operation of the Review Body, most respondents do not know its concreteactions. As regards the second goal, it shall be concluded that students refer some knowledge on the Mental Health Law, no knowledge on the IACOP Plan [Integral Plan for the Approach of Problematic Drug Use] and disparity of knowledge about rules and international treaties. Regarding the self-perception of training in Human Rights, addictions, Public Health and Interdisciplinary Work, they argue that it is basic and should be extended. As regards knowledge of approaches toaddictions, a significantly high number responds negatively. They consider the issues investigated in the survey as very important and they agree on the need for including them in academic training. Student’s participation in the entire research process was promoted in order to contribute in their own training

    P. 1-13Alternative antimicrobials require a deep understanding of their action mechanisms by in vitro assays which support science-based field use. This study focuses on the characterization of bactericidal mechanisms of potential antimicrobial compounds, two organic acids and three single essential oil (EO) compounds against swine enteropathogenic bacteria Escherichia coli, Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica serovar Typhimurium, and Clostridium perfringens. Target concentrations of the compounds were evaluated using the inhibitory potential of the vapor phase and bacterial viability after short-term exposure, while cell targets were disclosed using flow cytometry (FC), Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). All tested compounds exhibited vapor phase activity against the three bacterial species, except sodium salt of coconut fatty acid distillates against C. perfringens. Survival test results evidenced that effects on bacterial viability were concentration dependent and higher in single EO compounds than in organic acids. In detail, thymol and its isomer carvacrol were the most effective compounds. Further characterization of thymol and cinnamaldehyde activity revealed that thymol main target was the cell membrane, since it caused striking damages in the membrane permeability, integrity and composition evidenced by FC and FTIR in the three enteric pathogens. In contrast, cinnamaldehyde was more effective against enterobacteria than against C. perfringens and only caused slightly damages at the highest concentration tested. Its target at the molecular level differed between enterobacteria and C. perfringens isolates. The SEM micrographs allowed us to confirm the results previously obtained for both EO compounds by other techniques. Altogether, the study showed the straight effect of these antimicrobials, which could constitute relevant information to optimize their feed inclusion rates in field studies or field use.S

Invasive micropapillary carcinoma of the breast overexpresses MUC4 and is associated with poor outcome to adjuvant trastuzumab in HER2-positive breast cancer

Invasive micropapillary carcinoma of the breast (IMPC) is a histological tumor variant that occurs with low frequency characterized by an inside-out formation of tumor clusters with a pseudopapillary arrangement. IMPC is an aggressive tumor with poor clinical outcome. In addition, this histological subtype usually expresses human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) which also correlates with a more aggressive tumor. In this work we studied the clinical significance of IMPC in HER2-positive breast cancer patients treated with adjuvant trastuzumab. We also analyzed mucin 4 (MUC4) expression as a novel biomarker to identify IMPC.Fil: Mercogliano, María Florencia. Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas. Spinophilin loss correlates with poor patient prognosis in advanced stages of colon carcinoma

[Purpose+ The genomic region 17q21 is frequently associated with microsatellite instability and LOH in cancer, including gastric and colorectal carcinomas. This region contains several putative tumor suppressor genes, including Brca1, NM23, prohibitin, and spinophilin (Spn, PPP1R9B, neurabin II). The scaffold protein Spn is one of the regulatory subunits of phosphatase-1 (PP1) that targets PP1 to distinct subcellular locations and couples PP1 to its target. Thus, Spn may alter cell-cycle progression via the regulation of the phosphorylation status of the retinoblastoma protein, a direct target of PP1. Therefore, we analyzed whether Spn levels were reduced in colorectal carcinomas and whether Spn levels correlated with prognosis or response to therapy.[Experimental Design] By means of immunohistochemistry or quantitative PCR, we studied the levels of Spn in stages II, III, and IV colorectal carcinoma tumors and correlated to other clinicopathologic features as well as prognosis or response to therapy.[Results] Spn was lost in a percentage of human gastric, small intestine, and colorectal carcinomas. In patients with colorectal carcinoma, tumoral Spn downregulation correlated with a more aggressive histologic phenotype (poorer tumor differentiation and higher proliferative Ki67 index). Consistent with this observation, lower Spn protein expression levels were associated with faster relapse and poorer survival in patients with stage III colorectal carcinoma, particularly among those receiving adjuvant fluoropyrimidine therapy. We validated this result in an independent cohort of patients with metastatic colorectal carcinoma treated with standard chemotherapy. Although patients that achieved an objective tumor response exhibited Spn levels similar to nontumoral tissue, nonresponding patients showed a significant reduction in Spn mRNA levels.[Conclusions] Our data suggest that Spn downregulation contributes to a more aggressive biologic behavior, induces chemoresistance, and is associated with a poorer survival in patients with advanced stages of colorectal carcinoma. © 2013 American Association for Cancer Research. This work was supported by grants from the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation (SAF2009-08605), Fondo de Investigacion Sanitaria (PI12/00137), Consejeria de Ciencia e Innovacion, and Consejeria de Salud of the Junta de Andalucia (CTS-6844 and PI-0142).
