    Impacts of climate change scenarios on terrestrial productivity and biomass for energy in the Iberian Peninsula: assessment through the JSBACH model

The vulnerability of the Iberian Peninsula (IP) to climate changes, along with the fact that it is a water-limited region, drive a great concern and interest in understand the potentials of biomass for energy production under projected climate changes, since water shortage is a projected consequence of it. Henceforth the goals stated for this work include the understanding of the impact magnitude that climate changes and the solely effect of rising CO2 (in accordance to the prescribed in A1B scenario from IPPC) have on biomass and productivity over the IP; the modeling of the interannual variability in terrestrial productivity and biomass across de region (having the period 1960-1990 as reference) and the energy potentials derived by biomass in future scenarios (2060-2090 and 2070-2100 periods). The carbon fluxes were modeled by JSBACH model and its results were handled using GIS and statistical analysis. A better understanding of the applicability (and reliability) of this model on achieving the latter stated goals was another goal purposed in this work. IP has shown a broadly positive response to climate change, i.e. increased productivity under scenarios admitting elevation of atmospheric CO2 concentration (increases in GPP by ~41%; in forest NPP by ~54% and herbaceous NPP by ~36%, for 2060-2090 period), and smaller and negative response under scenarios disregarding rising CO2 levels (i.e. CO2 constant at 296ppm). The productivity and biomass correlation with changing climate variables also differed between different CO2 scenarios. The increase of water-use efficiency by 58% was as a result of CO2 fertilization effect, could explain the increase of productivity, although many limitations of the model (such as disregard of nitrogen cycle and land-use dynamics) poses many considerations to the acceptability of results and the overestimating productivity comparatively to many projections for the IP. Notwithstanding the comparison of changes in climate variables, showed a great correlation of results with other authors. A comprehensive analysis of biomass supply and its availability during scenarios with elevated CO2, shown that by 2060-2090, residues from thinning and logging activities over forest biomass have a potential of 0,165 and 0,495 EJ, and residues from agricultural activities (herbaceous biomass) have a potential of 0,346 EJ under a HIGH-YIELD scenario (assuming 40% of residues removal rate), corresponding to a share of current energy consumption of 13, 42 and 30%, respectively.     Mammals are threatened worldwide, with 26% of all species being includedin the IUCN threatened categories. This overall pattern is primarily associatedwith habitat loss or degradation, and human persecution for terrestrial mam-mals, and pollution, open net fishing, climate change, and prey depletion formarine mammals. MAMMALS INPORTUGAL is a publicly available data set compiling unpublishedgeoreferenced occurrence records of 92 terrestrial, volant, and marine mam-mals in mainland Portugal and archipelagos of the Azores and Madeira thatincludes 105,026 data entries between 1873 and 2021 (72% of the data occur-ring in 2000 and 2021). The methods used to collect the data were: live obser-vations/captures (43%), sign surveys (35%), camera trapping (16%),bioacoustics surveys (4%) and radiotracking, and inquiries that represent lessthan 1% of the records.     Climate change impacts on the vegetation carbon cycle of the Iberian Peninsula - Intercomparison of CMIP5 results

    The vulnerability of a water-limited region like the Iberian Peninsula (IP) to climate changes drives a great concern and interest in understanding its impacts on the carbon cycle, namely, in terms of biomass production. This study assesses the effects of climate change and rising CO2 on forest growth, carbon sequestration, and water-use efficiency on the IP by late 21st century using 12 models from the CMIP5 project (Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 5). We find a strong agreement among the models under representative concentration pathway 4.5 (RCP4.5) scenario, mostly regarding projected forest growth and increased primary production (13, 9% of gross primary production (GPP) increase projected by the models ensemble). Under RCP8.5 scenario, the results are less conclusive, as seven models project both GPP and net primary production to increase (up to 83% and 69%, respectively), while the remaining four models project the IP as a potential carbon source by late century. Divergences in carbon mass in wood predictions could be attributed to model structures, such as the N cycle, land model component, land cover data and parameterization, and distinct clusters of Earth System Models (ESMs). ESMs divergences in carbon feedbacks are likely being highly impacted by parameterization divergences and susceptibility to climate change and CO2 fertilization effect. Despite projected rainfall reductions, we observe a strong agreement between models regarding the increase of water-use efficiency (by 21% and 34%) under RCP4.5 and RCP8.5, respectively.     Os enfermeiros na promoção de esperança nos pais de crianças com doença crónica

    Introdução: Em Pediatria, a esperança pode ser considerada como um fator protetor dos profissionais de saúde e da criança/família. Objetivo: Analisar a influência da perceção de esperança de profissionais de saúde, no cuidar da criança com doença crónica e família. Métodos: estudo transversal e descritivo, realizado numa amostra de 102 profissionais de saúde da região centro de Portugal. Eram mulheres 92,2%, com média de idade de 39,9 anos. Utilizou-se um questionário de caracterização sociodemográfica e profissional e a Escala de Esperança (Ribeiro, Pedro, & Marques, 2006). Resultados: Dos profissionais, 62,7% enfermeiros, 36,3% exerciam funções no serviço de pediatria há mais de 10 anos. Os psicólogos e assistentes sociais e os do género masculino revelaram maior perceção de esperança, mas apenas a idade se relacionou significativamente com a esperança global.     Health-enhancing? Products: development of yogurts containing ingredients with functional properties

    INTRODUCTION The importance of yogurt as part of a balanced and healthy diet is recognized by regulatory authorities and scientific institutions in most countries. According to the Portuguese National Statistics Institute, there was an increase of 38% in the value of dairy sales in only four years. In addition, a study carried out by the Portuguese Society of Nutrition and Food Sciences reported that 26.8% of Portuguese adults consumed yogurts daily, ranging from 19% in the elderly to 35% in adults up to 30 years. Hence, this market represents a good opportunity to development new healthy yogurts. OBJECTIVES It was intended to develop yoghurts with improved health functionalities different than those already existing on the market, by adding several combinations of ingredients with established biological activities. METHODS Laboratorial experiments were done testing various combinations and different proportions of ingredients, to establish those that had potential for consumer acceptance. The ingredients tested included unconventional vegetables, fruits, herbs or seeds. After the laboratorial experiments with the formulations, those that resulted better were selected for a sensorial evaluation by an untrained panel simulating the consumers. Four final products were developed, corresponding to different combinations of ingredients, and having been identified with the four seasons of the year (Winter, Spring, Summer, Autumn). The final products were analysed as to their physico-chemical composition by using established methodologies. The nutritional information and energetic value was also evaluated. RESULTS The Winter yogurt possesses thermogenic and satiating properties and the ingredients used were apple, chia, cinnamon and ginger. The Spring yogurt presents properties capable of regulating intestinal transit, loss of appetite and is diuretic. The ingredients selected were pineapple, celery and mint. The Summer yogurt has antioxidant properties, regulates intestinal transit and diuresis. The ingredients included linseed, parsley, carrot, passion fruit and orange. The Autumn yogurt has diuretic and thermogenic properties. The ingredients used in its confection were watercress, pear and ginger. Protein, fibre and lipids varied, respectively, in the ranges 2.2-2.7, 0.4-1.5 and 0.5-0.7 g/100 g. The energetic value varied from 36 to 92 kcal/100 g and the calcium from 64 to 100 mg/100 g. CONCLUSIONS It is important that the food industry seeks to meet the needs of the consumers, which are more and more devoted to healthy eating practices, and who like to find also new and stimulating products to buy. The developed products were formulated to meet these challenges, and are believed to successfully enter the dairy products market because the evaluations of the sensorial panel were very positive. Hence, they have potential to be launched as a potential industrial opportunity in the line of yogurts with improved healthy functionalities. Furthermore, the putative effects of yogurt on the modulation of the gut microbiota and the prevention of obesity and cardiometabolic diseases will make them a successful new product.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    Antileishmanial activity of the essential oil from Tetradenia ripariaobtained in different seasons

    The herbaceous shrub Tetradenia ripariahas been traditionally used to treat inflammatory and infectious diseases. Recently, a study showed that T. ripariaessential oil (TrEO) obtained in summer has antileishmanial effects, although these results could be influenced by seasonal variation. This study evaluated the activity of the TrEO obtained in different seasons against Leishmania (Leishmania) amazonensis, in vitro and in vivo. The compounds in the TrEO were analysed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry; terpenoids were present and oxygenated sesquiterpenes were the majority compounds (55.28%). The cytotoxicity and nitric oxide (NO) production were also tested after TrEO treatment. The TrEO from all seasons showed a 50% growth inhibitory concentration for promastigotes of about 15 ng/mL; at 30 ng/mL and 3 ng/mL, the TrEO reduced intracellular amastigote infection, independently of season. The TrEO from plants harvested in summer had the highest 50% cytotoxic concentration, 1,476 ng/mL for J774.A1 macrophages, and in spring (90.94 ng/mL) for murine macrophages. NO production did not change in samples of the TrEO from different seasons. The antileishmanial effect in vivo consisted of a reduction of the parasite load in the spleen. These results suggest that the TrEO has potential effects on L. (L.) amazonensis, consonant with its traditional use to treat parasitic diseases

    Mercury biomagnification in a Southern Ocean food web

    Biomagnification of mercury (Hg) in the Scotia Sea food web of the Southern Ocean was examined using the stable isotope ratios of nitrogen (δ15N) and carbon (δ13C) as proxies for trophic level and feeding habitat, respectively. Total Hg and stable isotopes were measured in samples of particulate organic matter (POM), zooplankton, squid, myctophid fish, notothenioid fish and seabird tissues collected in two years (austral summers 2007/08 and 2016/17). Overall, there was extensive overlap in δ13C values across taxonomic groups suggesting similarities in habitats, with the exception of the seabirds, which showed some differences, possibly due to the type of tissue analysed (feathers instead of muscle). δ15N showed increasing enrichment across groups in the order POM to zooplankton to squid to myctophid fish to notothenioid fish to seabirds. There were significant differences in δ15N and δ13C values among species within taxonomic groups, reflecting inter-specific variation in diet. Hg concentrations increased with trophic level, with the lowest values in POM (0.0005 ± 0.0002 μg g−1 dw) and highest values in seabirds (3.88 ± 2.41 μg g−1 in chicks of brown skuas Stercorarius antarcticus). Hg concentrations tended to be lower in 2016/17 than in 2007/08 for mid-trophic level species (squid and fish), but the opposite was found for top predators (i.e. seabirds), which had higher levels in the 2016/17 samples. This may reflect an interannual shift in the Scotia Sea marine food web, caused by the reduced availability of a key prey species, Antarctic krill Euphausia superba. In 2016/17, seabirds would have been forced to feed on higher trophic-level prey, such as myctophids, that have higher Hg burdens. These results suggest that changes in the food web are likely to affect the pathway of mercury to Southern Ocean top predators. Changes in foodweb dynamics influence Hg bioaccumulation in top predators.</p
