This report, developed at Joe Gray Events, research about cultural events and how they are related with other subjects as education through art and social innovation and entrepreneurship to combat poverty and social exclusion. Using the life’s stories of two individuals as a research method it’s possible to analyse the impact that events have in life of more poor communities with great lack of basic resources. During the internship it was possible to work directly with this issue understanding which procedures would be necessary to create an organization that aims help underfunded young people. We can conclude that this organization can use the events as a strategy to combat these III social problems in different ways, helping to integrate people in work market, to dynamize the local and attract tourists and to raise money to develop the neighbourhood. Through the internship and the life’s stories we can conclude that the cultural events have a big positive impact in community’s life. However, is necessary that the community works with the organisation and participate in every step of the event

First-principle study of excitonic self-trapping in diamond

We present a first-principles study of excitonic self-trapping in diamond. Our calculation provides evidence for self-trapping of the 1s core exciton and gives a coherent interpretation of recent experimental X-ray absorption and emission data. Self-trapping does not occur in the case of a single valence exciton. We predict, however, that self-trapping should occur in the case of a valence biexciton. This process is accompanied by a large local relaxation of the lattice which could be observed experimentally.Comment: 12 pages, RevTex file, 3 Postscript figure

We present the first findings of the new electrically-detected EPR (EDEPR) technique which reveal different shallow and deep centers without using the external cavity as well as the hf source and recorder, with measuring the only magnetoresistance of the Si-QW confined by the superconductor delta-barriers.Comment: 7 pages, 7 figure

Long-term survival and transmission of INI1-mutation via nonpenetrant males in a family with rhabdoid tumour predisposition syndrome

Rhabdoid tumour predisposition syndrome (RTPS) is a rare syndrome caused by inheritance of a mutated INI1 gene for which only two multigeneration families have been reported. To further characterise the genotype and phenotype of RTPS, we present a third family in which at least three cousins developed an atypical teratoid/rhabdoid tumour (AT/RT) at a young age. Two of these patients showed unusual long survival, and one of these developed an intracranial meningioma and a myoepithelioma of the lip in adulthood. Mutation analysis of INI1 revealed a germline G>A mutation in the donor splice site of exon 4 (c.500+1G>A) in the patients and in their unaffected fathers. This mutation prevents normal splicing and concomitantly generates a stop codon, resulting in nonsense-mediated mRNA decay. Biallelic inactivation of INI1 in the tumours, except for the meningioma, was confirmed by absence of nuclear INI1-protein staining. The myoepithelioma of one of the patients carried an identical somatic rearrangement in the NF2 gene as the AT/RT, indicating that both tumours originated from a common precursor cell. In conclusion, this study demonstrates for the first time transmission of a germline INI1-mutation in a RTPS family via nonpenetrant males, long-term survival of two members of this family with an AT/RT, and involvement of INI1 in the pathogenesis of myoepithelioma

BACKGROUND: The Health Education Impact Questionnaire (heiQ) evaluates the effectiveness of health education and self-management programs provided to people dealing with a wide range of conditions. Aim of this study was to translate, culturally adapt and validate the Dutch translation of the heiQ and to compare the results with the English, German and French translations. METHODS: A systematic translation process was undertaken. Psychometric properties were studied among patients with arthritis, atopic dermatitis, food allergy and asthma (n = 286). Factorial validity using confirmatory factor analysis, item difficulty (D), item remainder correlation and composite reliability were conducted. Stability was tested using the intra-class correlation coefficient (ICC). RESULTS: Items were well understood and only minor language adjustments were required. Confirmatory fit indices were >0.95 and item difficulty was D ≥ 0.65 for all items in scales showing acceptable fit indices, except for the reversed Emotional distress scale. Composite reliability ranged between 0.67 and 0.85. Test-retest reliability (n = 93) ICC varied between 0.61 and 0.84. Comparisons with other translations showed comparable fit indices. A lower ICC on Self-monitoring and insight scale was observed. CONCLUSIONS: The Dutch translation of the heiQ was found to be well understood and user friendly by patients with Rheumatoid Arthritis, Atopic Dermatitis, Food allergy and asthma and to have robust psychometric properties for evaluating the impact of health education and self-management programs. Given the wide applications of the heiQ and the comparability of the Dutch results with the English, German and French version, the heiQ is a practical and useful questionnaire to evaluate the impact of self-management support programs in different countries and populations with different diseases

Evaluation of Staphylococcus aureus Nasal Carriage Screening before Vascular Surgery

INTRODUCTION: Staphylococcus aureus is the most important pathogen in the development of surgical site infections (SSI). Patients who carry S. aureus in the nose are at increased risk for the development of SSI in cardiothoracic and orthopedic surgery. In these populations it has been shown that the risk for SSI can be substantially reduced by eradicating S. aureus carriage. For vascular surgery the relation between nasal carriage and surgical site infections has not been clearly investigated. For this reason we performed this study to analyze the relation between S. aureus nasal carriage and SSI in our vascular surgery population. METHODS: A prospective cohort study was undertaken, including all patients undergoing vascular surgery between January first 2010 and December 31th 2010. Before surgery patients were screened for S. aureus nasal carriage using a PCR technique. The presence of SSI was recorded based on criteria of the CDC. RESULTS: Screening was performed in 224. Of those, 55 (24.5%) were positive, 159 (71.0%) were negative and 10 (4.5%) were inconclusive. In the screened vascular population 4 S. aureus SSI occurred in the 55 carriers compared with 6 in 159 non-carriers (p=0.24). A stratified analysis revealed a 10-fold increased risk in nasal carriers undergoing central reconstruction surgery (3 S. aureus SSI in 20 procedures versus 1 in 65 procedures in non-carriers, p=0.039). DISCUSSION: In patients undergoing central reconstruction surgery nasals carriers are at increased risk for the development of S. aureus SSI. These patients will probably benefit from perioperative treatment to eradicate nasal carriage

Secondary meningioma in a long-term survivor of atypical teratoid/rhabdoid tumour with a germline INI1 mutation

OBJECTIVE: We report on a patient who developed a meningioma more than two decades after removal at a young age of an atypical teratoid/rhabdoid tumour (AT/RT), which was due to a germline INI1 mutation, and radio- and chemotherapy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We present genetic evidence that the meningioma is not a recurrence or metastasis of the AT/RT and not due to the INI1 mutation, but is a radiation-induced tumour. CONCLUSION: This is the first case illustrating that improved survival of young patients with an AT/RT after aggressive treatment may be gained at the cost of an increased risk for the development of radiation-induced, non-INI1-related tumours
