Measuring Nonequilibrium Temperature of Forced Oscillators

    Get PDF
The meaning of temperature in nonequilibrium thermodynamics is considered by using a forced harmonic oscillator in a heat bath, where we have two effective temperatures for the position and the momentum, respectively. We invent a concrete model of a thermometer to testify the validity of these different temperatures from the operational point of view. It is found that the measured temperature depends on a specific form of interaction between the system and a thermometer, which means the zeroth law of thermodynamics cannot be immediately extended to nonequilibrium cases.Comment: 8 page

Early detection of cobweb disease infection on Agaricus bisporus sporocarps using hyperspectral imaging

    Get PDF
From the nineteen-nineties, cobweb disease caused serious losses for the mushroom sector in Europe, in the USA, and in Australia (Fletcher & Gaze, 2008), so it is one of the most notable fungal infections of cultivated white button mushroom (Agaricus bisporus). The aim of this study was to identify cobweb disease (Cladobortyum dendroides) caused cap spotting and brownish rot on the mushroom sporocarp, and to find a proper discrimination method in the case of this infection.Fruiting body samples were divided into 4 groups, a control one and three others treated with different chemicals that are tested against fungal infections. The groups were subdivided into 2 portions and the first was infected with cobweb disease. Images of the caps were recorded and their hyperspectral images were acquired in the wavelength range of 900–1700 nm.On the hyperspectral images infected and healthy areas were selected, on these average spectra differences were found around the known water peaks (1200 and 1450 nm). The spatial distribution of the water content can be used for the detection of the spoilage, because the infected areas showed different reflection values at these water absorption peaks.Support Vector Machine method was applied successfully to discriminate between the infected and control groups and Monte Carlo cross-validation was carried out

This is the publisher's version, also available electronically from http://scitation.aip.org/content/aip/journal/jcp/97/3/10.1063/1.463103.We evaluate the entropy of several binary hard sphere fluid mixtures using two approximate expressions that require as input only the pair correlation functions,g αβ(r). An approximation based on the incompressible limit is found to be accurate for medium to high density fluids

Outline analysis of the grapevine (Vitis vinifera L.) berry shape by elliptic Fourier descriptors

    Get PDF
Grapevine berry morphology is one of the most important features in table grape production. In this study, berry samples of 46 grapevine accessions were investigated for 3 consecutive years with elliptic Fourier descriptors (EFD) to evaluate shape diversity. Ten reference shapes obtained from the OIV descriptor list were involved and principal component (PC) scores summarizing the EFD's were statistically evaluated with Two way ANOVA and discriminant analysis. The cummulative contribution of the five principal components was 96.83 %. Two way ANOVA revealed that berry shape had high variability within the accessions and years. Based on the linear discriminant analysis, reference shapes were compared to those of the accessions and graphic reconstruction was carried out. OIV references were considered as unknown samples and grouped into the accession classes. Overall correct classification of the accessions into their group was 13.88 %. Our results showed that EFD together with reference shapes are a powerful method to discribe berry shape and possibly give the future basis of uvometric evaluation of grapevine cultivars

GRA.LE.D. (GRApevine LEaf Digitalization) Software for the Detection and Graphic Reconstruction of Ampelometric Differences Between Vitis Leaves

    Get PDF
Raster graphic ampelometric software was not exclusively developed for the estimation of leaf area, but also for the characterization of grapevine (Viti vinifera L.) leaves. The software was written in C++programming language, using the C++ Builder 2007 for Windows 95-XP and Linux operation systems. Ithandles desktop-scanned images. On the image analysed with the GRA.LE.D., the user has to determine11 points. These points are then connected and the distances between them calculated. The GRA.LE.D.software supports standard ampelometric measurements such as leaf area, angles between the veins andlengths of the veins. These measurements are recorded by the software and exported into plain ASCII textfiles for single or multiple samples. Twenty-two biometric data points of each leaf are identified by theGRA.LE.D. It presents the opportunity to statistically analyse experimental data, allows comparison ofcultivars and enables graphic reconstruction of leaves using the Microsoft Excel Chart Wizard. The GRA.LE.D. was thoroughly calibrated and compared to other widely used instruments and methods such asphoto-gravimetry, LiCor Li3100, WinDIAS2.0 and ImageTool. By comparison, the GRA.LE.D. presentedthe most accurate measurements of leaf area, but the LiCor Li3100 and the WinDIAS2.0 were faster, whilethe photo-gravimetric method proved to be the most time-consuming. The WinDIAS2.0 instrument wasthe least reliable. The GRA.LE.D. is uncomplicated, user-friendly, accurate, consistent, reliable and haswide practical application

Commercial window glass tested as possible high dose dosimeter. Electron and gamma irradiation

    Get PDF
The use of commercial window glass as possible high dose routine dosimeter has been investigated. Glass samples have been irradiated with doses in the range of 1-50 kGy using 60Co γ source, 4 MeV and 12 MeV electron accelerators. The samples were given a post irradiation thermal treatment (150 oC for 20 min) in order to improve the post irradiation stability of the measured specific optical absorbance, since a rapid fading of the optical absorbance has been observed at room temperature immediately after irradiation. The optical absorbance measurements of the irradiated samples, kept in the dark and at room temperature, were carried on for several weeks. The samples submitted to heat treatment showed a decrease of about 10-15% of the specific optical absorbance that became much less pronounced after 10 days from the irradiation. The response of the window glass plates is energy and dose rate dependent. This study shows the feasibility of using commercial window glass as a routine dosimeter in a certain dose range after proper calibration in the irradiation plant where they are going to be used

    Sparse Kneser graphs are Hamiltonian

    Get PDF
For integers k≥1 and n≥2k+1, the Kneser graph K(n,k) is the graph whose vertices are the k-element subsets of {1,…,n} and whose edges connect pairs of subsets that are disjoint. The Kneser graphs of the form K(2k+1,k) are also known as the odd graphs. We settle an old problem due to Meredith, Lloyd, and Biggs from the 1970s, proving that for every k≥3, the odd graph K(2k+1,k) has a Hamilton cycle. This and a known conditional result due to Johnson imply that all Kneser graphs of the form K(2k+2a,k) with k≥3 and a≥0 have a Hamilton cycle. We also prove that K(2k+1,k) has at least 22k−6 distinct Hamilton cycles for k≥6. Our proofs are based on a reduction of the Hamiltonicity problem in the odd graph to the problem of finding a spanning tree in a suitably defined hypergraph on Dyck words

Mikroszatellita-instabilitás előfordulása, intratumoralis heterogenitása, prognosztikus és prediktív potenciálja primer colorectalis carcinomák és párosított májáttéteik sebészi kezelését követően

Absztrakt Bevezetés: A vastagbéldaganatokra jellemző genetikai instabilitás megnyilvánulhat több úton: kromoszomális instabilitás, mikroszatellita-instabilitás, illetve „CpG-island methylator phenotype”. Ezek pontosabb karakterizálásával a rendelkezésre álló kezelések elviekben optimalizálhatók lehetnek. Eredmények: A betegek 11,5%-a (14/122) rendelkezett mikroszatellita-instabil fenotípusú daganattal. Következtetések: A prognosztikus faktorok pontosabb meghatározása nagyobb esetszámú, pontosan szelektált vizsgálat keretében hatékonyabbá teheti a kezelés megválasztását. Orv. AAZTA-Like Ligands Bearing Phenolate Arms as Efficient Chelators for 68Ga Labelling in vitro and in vivo

    Get PDF
: The introduction of a phenolate pendant arm in place of an acetate on AAZTA- and DATA-like ligands resulted in hepta- and hexadentate chelators able to form Ga(III) complexes with thermodynamic stability and kinetic inertness higher than that of other Ga(III) complexes based on the parent 6-amino-6-methylperhydro-1,4-diazepine scaffold. In particular, the heptadentate AAZ3A-endoHB with a phenolate arm on an endocyclic N-atom shows a logKGaL of 27.35 and a remarkable resistance to hydroxide coordination up to basic pH (pH>9). This behaviour allows to also improve the kinetic inertness of the complex showing a dissociation half-life (t1/2 ) at pH 7.4 of 76 h. Although also the hexadentate AAZ2A-exoHB chelator forms a stable (logKGaL =24.69) and inert (t1/2 =33 h at pH 7.4) Ga(III) complex, the 68 Ga labelling showed a better radiochemical yield with AAZ3A-endoHB, especially at room temperature. Thus, a bifunctional chelator of AAZ3A-endoHB was synthesized bearing an isothiocyanate group that was conjugated to the N-terminus of a c(RGD) peptide for integrin receptor targeting. Finally, the conjugate was successfully labelled with 68 Ga isotope, and the resulting radiotracer tested for its stability in human serum and then in vivo for targeting B16-F10 tumours with miniPET imaging

Lyapunov instability of fluids composed of rigid diatomic molecules

We study the Lyapunov instability of a two-dimensional fluid composed of rigid diatomic molecules, with two interaction sites each, and interacting with a WCA site-site potential. We compute full spectra of Lyapunov exponents for such a molecular system. These exponents characterize the rate at which neighboring trajectories diverge or converge exponentially in phase space. Quam. These exponents characterize the rate at which neighboring trajectories diverge or converge exponentially in phase space. Qualitative different degrees of freedom -- such as rotation and translation -- affect the Lyapunov spectrum differently. We study this phenomenon by systematically varying the molecular shape and the density. We define and evaluate ``rotation numbers'' measuring the time averaged modulus of the angular velocities for vectors connecting perturbed satellite trajectories with an unperturbed reference trajectory in phase space. For reasons of comparison, various time correlation functions for translation and rotation are computed. The relative dynamics of perturbed trajectories is also studied in certain subspaces of the phase space associated with center-of-mass and orientational molecular motion.Comment: RevTeX 14 pages, 7 PostScript figures.
