Predictions on three-particle azimuthal correlations in proton-proton collisions
The ridge signal, which is long-ranged in rapidity, in the di-hadron
correlations in high-multiplicity p-p and p-A collisions opened up a whole new
research area in high-energy QCD. Although the ridge had been observed in A-A
collisions and interpreted as a result of the radial flow of quark-gluon
plasma, it had not appeared until recently in the data of small collision
systems such as p-p and p-A, nor had it been predicted theoretically or seen in
the event generators. There are two competing approaches that attempt to
explain the systematics of the di-hadron ridge signal; hydrodynamics and gluon
saturation physics (color glass condensate/glasma). In this work, we present
predictions for the transverse momentum and rapidity dependence of the
three-particle correlation function within the gluon saturation physics.
Tri-hadron correlations can be measured, and the data can possibly rule out one
of the two alternative approaches
MicroExpNet: An Extremely Small and Fast Model For Expression Recognition From Face Images
This paper is aimed at creating extremely small and fast convolutional neural
networks (CNN) for the problem of facial expression recognition (FER) from
frontal face images. To this end, we employed the popular knowledge
distillation (KD) method and identified two major shortcomings with its use: 1)
a fine-grained grid search is needed for tuning the temperature hyperparameter
and 2) to find the optimal size-accuracy balance, one needs to search for the
final network size (or the compression rate). On the other hand, KD is proved
to be useful for model compression for the FER problem, and we discovered that
its effects gets more and more significant with the decreasing model size. In
addition, we hypothesized that translation invariance achieved using
max-pooling layers would not be useful for the FER problem as the expressions
are sensitive to small, pixel-wise changes around the eye and the mouth.
However, we have found an intriguing improvement on generalization when
max-pooling is used. We conducted experiments on two widely-used FER datasets,
CK+ and Oulu-CASIA. Our smallest model (MicroExpNet), obtained using knowledge
distillation, is less than 1MB in size and works at 1851 frames per second on
an Intel i7 CPU. Despite being less accurate than the state-of-the-art,
MicroExpNet still provides significant insights for designing a
microarchitecture for the FER problem.Comment: International Conference on Image Processing Theory, Tools and

Universal size effect of concrete specimens and effect of notch depth
The universal size effect law of concrete is a law that describes the dependence of nominal strength of specimens or structure on both its size and the crack (or notch) length, over the entire of interest, and exhibits the correct small and large size asymptotic properties as required. The main difficulty has been the transition of crack length from 0, in which case the size effect mode is Type 1, to deep cracks (or notches), in which case the size effect mode is Type 2 and fundamentally different from Type 1. The current study is based on recently obtained comprehensive fracture test data from three-point bending beams tested under identical conditions. In this test, the experimental program consisted of 80 three-point bend beams with 4 different depths 40, 93, 215 and 500mm, corresponding to a size range of 1:12.5. Five different relative notch lengths, a/D = 0, 0.02, 0.075, 0.15, 0.30 were cut into the beams. A total of 20 different geometries (family of beams) were tested. The present paper will use these data to analyze the effects of size, crack length. This paper presents a studying to improve the existing universal size effect law, named by Bazant, using the experimentally obtained beam strengths for various different specimen sizes and all notch depths. The updated universal size effect law is shown to fit the comprehensive data quite well
