Genetic and environmental links between self-reports and parent-reports of child personality
Personality ratings have been consistently found to be reliable and moderately heritable, but interrater agreement between self- and other-report of personality are low-to-moderate, particularly in childhood samples. The current study aims to examine the agreement between child self-reports and parent-informant reports of Big Five personality traits using a genetically informative approach. Using data from a sample of 2756 (982 monozygotic) twins ages six to 21 from The Texas Twin Project, we find that agreement between parent ratings and child-self reports for all Big 5 personality traits are mediated by both genetic and non-shared environmental influences. Models incorporating dominant genetic effects rather than additive genetic effects alone proved to better fit the data. In these models, the effect of additive genetics was strongly reduced or eliminated altogether in favor of strong dominant genetic influences, suggesting that dominant genetic effects play a key role in parent and child ratings of personality and should be more widely incorporated into similar research. Additive genetic effects were observed in parent reports of child extraversion, agreeableness, and neuroticism, but not in any self-reported traits. Dominant genetic effects, however, were observed in parent and child reports of extraversion, openness, conscientiousness, and neuroticism, as well as parent reports of agreeableness. Non-environmental effects were strong for all Big 5 traits reported by children and parents. Contrast effects, while slight, were observed in parent and self-reports of extraversion as well as parent reports of conscientiousness and neuroticism.Psycholog

Gender-related differences in computer-mediated communication and computer-supported collaborative learning
A question associated with the introduction of computer-supported collaborative learning (CSCL) is whether all participants profit equally from working in CSCL environments. This article reports on a review study into gender-related differences in participation in CSCL. As many of the processes in CSCL are similar to those in computer-mediated communication (CMC), studies into CMC are also included in the review. Male dominance is found to play a role in many CMC settings. A learning culture with an explicit focus on participation by all students seems to be related to a more gender-balanced participation in CMC, however. A tendency for boys to be more active participants than girls is also present in CSCL environments, but it is less pronounced than in CMC. This may be explained by the fact that participation is explicitly promoted in most CSCL environments. Gender differences in the character of students' contributions are found in both CMC and CSCL. It is concluded that in order to avoid gender-stereotyped participation and communication patterns, it is necessary to explicitly address inclusiveness as an aspect of a collaborative classroom culture. A plea is made for further research into differential participation by students in CSCL, and the effects thereof on cognitive and affective learning outcomes. Research should also focus on the question how classroom cultures can be promoted that support active participation of all students aimed at collaborative knowledge construction. © 2007 The Authors.
This dissertation addresses the realization of domestic workers’ rights, provided by Constitutional Amendment nº 72/2013 and by Complementary Law nº 150/2015, and the possibility of realizing social justice, according to Nancy Fraser's three-dimensional concept. The implementation of legislative changes seems to be the last challenge in a context of a long history of domestic worker’s labour and social rights being denied. Nevertheless, considering the injustices which paid domestic workers have historically been subjected to, including the servile characteristics inherited from slavery, as well as the oppression and exploitation demarcated by the intersectionality of gender, race and class relations, the real possibility that legislative changes are sufficient to remedy these injustices is questionable. The research’s methodology is qualitative, and the data was collected through semi-structured interviews with eight employers and six domestic workers from the city of Porto Alegre and its Metropolitan Region, the capital of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil’s most Southern state, with the number of interviews being determined by theoretical saturation criterion. The people interviewed were recruited by the snowball sampling method, from different points of entry into the field; although greater diversity was sought in the sample, there were explicit delimitations of gender, race and class, which is related to the characteristics of paid domestic work. The interviews addressed personal information, questions about the domestic work relationship and opinions about the rights of domestic workers. The interviews were recorded with prior authorization from the interviewees and were later transcribed and categorized with the aid of the NVIVO system. Content analysis was utilized to interpret the data. It was found that changing the legal status of paid domestic work so that it was equal with other types of labour did not imply a change in the hierarchy of such a function in the social imaginary and practices. In every domestic work relationship, access to rights is porous and fluid, since in the same contractual relationship, both the enforcement and non-compliance of rights coexist. The data analysed in this research indicated that the legislative changes promoted by EC 72/2013 and LC 150/2015 made it possible, to some extent, to reduce the effects of maldistribution and misrecognition injustices, but were unable to promote in their entirety redistribution, recognition and representation, dimensions proposed by Fraser as constitutive of social justice

Celebrations at the Berlin Court as Reported by Secretary of the English Ambassador Philip Plantamour
The article was submitted on 20.01.2020.Celebrations were an important element in the functioning of royal and princely courts in Europe in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. They added splendor to the residences in which they were held and demonstrated the status of rulers: well-directed festivities spoke of their organisers’ political status. Such events not only took place in the closed courtyards of palaces, but also in the open air, which guaranteed a larger audience and made it possible to invite the media. Such events were also observed by foreign diplomats, who described them in their reports. This type of information can be found in the correspondence of Philip Plantamour, secretary of the English Ambassador George Stepney. An analysis of the manuscripts he left reveals an interesting picture of the ceremony as seen through his eyes. These descriptions do not have a specific pattern: he simply described what he saw or had the opportunity to hear. The analysed accounts are an important source for research on the customs, ceremonies, and celebrations at the royal court in Berlin at the turn of the eighteenth century. Philip Plantamour’s exact descriptions show us the glamour, style, and role of these events in the context of propaganda and their political and social dimensions. This article was prepared with the support of the grant of the National Science Center in Krakow No. DEC 2017/01/X/HS3/00482 as part of individual scholarly research on the topic: “Sociopolitical Elites of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania in the Light of Reports from French and English Diplomats of the Second Half of the 17th Century”.
