    Generative model of art

This work is a sort of set of notes I made while being both the experiment and the experimenter with the Master of Glass Art and Science. I’m not a scientist. At the beginning of my studying at Glass Art and Science program, my artistic voice longed to be made manifest, but I did not know how to find the right expression for it. Now I feel like I found the way, and it happened because here I had a possibility to be in art and science at once. I was lucky to find a lot of workable analogies in science that I could apply to my art making. I’ve looked at Biology, Morphogenesis and Fractal geometry and I learned about how objects take form in Nature. Thanks to the science I’ve got a rich soil of awareness, kind of strong base, from which I began to advance rapidly like an artist. Some of the facts from science I noticed, already exists in my art making, but the awareness of them still leads me somehow to the new levels of my work. The idea of “morphological fields” from evolutionary biologist Rupert Sheldrake’s is very much related to my art making. The heart of his idea is that if we look at how the cells multiply, how they reproduce themselves… if we look at Nature and try to break it down and to understand and read how things happen, if we try to explain why it looks like this or that, we fail to find enough information to explain the final forms. Sheldrake argues that there is not enough information available when we deconstruct cellular information to explain how larger scale forms occur. Something or some process appears to be happening outside of what we can see. We cannot see the force that makes thing take shape. As an artist, I understand that force very personally. I just open to it, I just give it to my hands, and there is no difference between me and the rest of natural processes

    The skin

The skin is our body‘s envelope, acting both as a protection and as a means of interacting with the outside world. Its structure is complex and divided into three layers: the epidermis, the outermost layer, the dermis, and the deepest, the hypodermis, each of which fulfils precise functions

Alcohol Use, Drinking Motivations, and Depression Among College Students: The Roles of Sociotropy and Autonomy

Sociotropy and autonomy are two cognitive personality dimensions, or personality styles, that have been implicated in the way individuals may uniquely develop, experience, and respond to treatment for depression. The goal of the current study was to investigate whether these cognitive personality dimensions are differentially related to drinking motivations and alcohol-related behaviors among college students. Participants included 311 college students (Mage = 23.1, 63% male) recruited via Amazon Mechanical Turk. Results partially supported hypothesized relationships showing that generally, those higher in sociotropy were more likely to endorse external motivations for drinking (i.e. social and conformity motives), while those higher in autonomy were more likely to endorse internal motivations for drinking (i.e., coping motives). Moreover, results showed that sociotropy moderated the relationship between social drinking motives and binge drinking, and that gender did not impact this result. In comparison, autonomy moderated the relationship between coping drinking motives and alcohol-related negative consequences, and this relationship varied as a function of gender. Findings provide initial evidence that sociotropy and autonomy are differentially related to student drinking motivations and alcohol-related behaviors. Research that is sensitive to the heterogeneous nature of the development, maintenance, and treatment for depression may yield important treatment implications when considering alcohol misuse among college students

Pain, Love, and Voice: The Role of Domestic Violence Victims in Sentencing

    Get PDF
Criminal law systems throughout the world have evolved to a stage where they no longer ask, What is the appropriate role of the victim in a criminal trial? The questions now relate to the scope of the victim\u27s rights, in which procedures she has independent standing, and at what stage she should be heard. The process of the prosecution stepping into the victim\u27s shoes, whereby the state controls the entire criminal process, seemingly on behalf of the victim, has been replaced by the recognition that the interests of the prosecution (the State) are not always consistent with those of the victim. The view that will be developed here as the main thesis of this Article, that victims should be heard at the sentencing stage, irrespective of their views, is far from common. This Article will first establish the theoretical basis for this view by drawing on an expressive theory, discussed in Part I, and will take this theory a step further, into the sphere of the particular victim who asks for leniency
