Članek obravnava motivno-tematske in jezikovno-slogovne vidike pojavljanja islama v sodobnih slovenskih romanih po letu 1991. Presojanje islamskega Drugega se namreč v romanih nekaterih avtorjev (M. Novak, M. Tomšič, G. Babnik, B. Kolar) povezuje z izrazito negativno tematizacijo elementov iz afriško-arabskega prostora, medtem ko drugi avtorji (A. E. Skubic, M. Sosič, G. Vojnović, J. Snoj) postavljajo dogajanje v kontekst zgodovinskih izkušenj slovenskega naroda, ki služijo kot izhodišče za nevtralno opredeljevanje do muslimanske pojavnosti iz nekdanje večetnične jugoslovanske skupnosti. The article deals with the motivic-thematic and linguistic-stylistic aspects of the presence of Islamic appearance dimensions in the contemporary Slovenian novels since 1991, thereby it is determined that, according to the novelized valuation judgments toward the Islamic society or culture, the two novelistic lines are inevitable delineated. Actually, in some of the authors’ novels (M. Novak, M. Tomšič, G. Babnik, B. Kolar) the assessment of the Islamic Otherness is equated with extremely negative thematization of the elements from African-Arab area, meanwhile the other authors (A. E. Skubic, M. Sosič, G. Vojnović, J. Snoj) set the novelistic events into the context of the Slovenian historical experience, which is serving as a base for a surprisingly neutral definition, meant for only that Muslim appearance, which derives exclusively from the former multiethnic Yugoslav community

The paper deals with the occurrence of multiculturality, interculturality and Otherness in the contemporary Slovenian novels written by the authors Brina Švigelj Mérat, which is also known as Brina Svit, Erica Johnson Debeljak and Goran Vojnović. The novels by Brina Svit, who was born in Slovenia but moved to France, are filled with the protagonist’s sense of alienation and uncertainty due to her (double) identity problems, mutual issues and/or transcultural living in different countries, which is the fact that shows certain autobiographical impact. Likewise, the narrative prose of Erica Johnson Debeljak is based on the autobiographical experiences that are related to author’s migration from America to Slovenia and her later perception of Slovenian language, culture, living style, customs etc. The female author gives a special attention to the Slovenian stereotypical judgment of the American, the Western European and the Yugoslav Otherness. Slovenian underestimation of people from the (southern) Balkan countries has the even more significant role in the novels by Goran Vojnović, who faced the stigmatization himself while living on Fužine, the place that is also known as the Slovenian multicultural “ghetto”. Vojnović’s protagonists are often verbally labeled because of their different origins and/or cultural status; therefore, they fight with their own sense of alienation, identity problems and lack of social communication. In this way, the intercultural aspect of the selected novels is represented in many connected levels: by including words, phrases or statements in foreign languages; by motivicthematic basis, built on the several social-cultural issues (sense of alienation, migrations, conception of double identity, displaced persons, multilingualism etc.); by the intertextual quotations of literary works written by the authors who have also shared their intercultural experience with the audience.Članek obravnava pojavljanje večkulturnosti, medkulturnosti in Drugega v sodobnih slovenskih romanih Brine Švigelj Mérat/Brine Svit, Erice Johnson Debeljak in Gorana Vojnovića. Nenehno spopadanje protagonistk z nestabilnostjo lastne dvojne identitete, zapletenostjo medčloveških odnosov in transkulturnim dojemanjem kategorij domovine in tujine evocira vtis avtobiografskosti. Ta nadalje odzvanja v romanesknih pripovedih Erice Johnson Debeljak, zlasti v narativnih prizorih protagonistkine imigracije v Slovenijo in njenega medkulturnega soočenja s slovenskim jezikom, kulturo in drugačnim življenjskim stilom. Pisateljica posebno pozornost namenja kritičnemu reprezentiranju stereotipnega opredeljevanja slovenske družbe do ameriške, zahodnoevropske in jugoslovanske drugosti.

The paper deals with selected intertextual elements in the novels by Drago Jančar Drevo brez imena (The Nameless Tree, 2008) and To noč sem jo videl (I Saw Her That Night, 2010), thereby specifically focuses on the function of the motto, the signification of the reliance on folk literature, literary references, expressed by the montage and borrowing, and the inclusion of the metric quote in the textual context. Special attention is given to the parts of templates, to which intertextual references are related, and their role in creating a comprehensive image of the main characters and contributing to the ideaed-thematic base of the novels

Magneto-optic dynamics in a ferromagnetic nematic liquid crystal

We investigate dynamic magneto-optic effects in a ferromagnetic nematic liquid crystal experimentally and theoretically. Experimentally we measure the magnetization and the phase difference of the transmitted light when an external magnetic field is applied. As a model we study the coupled dynamics of the magnetization, M, and the director field, n, associated with the liquid crystalline orientational order. We demonstrate that the experimentally studied macroscopic dynamic behavior reveals the importance of a dynamic cross-coupling between M and n. The experimental data are used to extract the value of the dissipative cross-coupling coefficient. We also make concrete predictions about how reversible cross-coupling terms between the magnetization and the director could be detected experimentally by measurements of the transmitted light intensity as well as by analyzing the azimuthal angle of the magnetization and the director out of the plane spanned by the anchoring axis and the external magnetic field. We derive the eigenmodes of the coupled system and study their relaxation rates. We show that in the usual experimental set-up used for measuring the relaxation rates of the splay-bend or twist-bend eigenmodes of a nematic liquid crystal one expects for a ferromagnetic nematic liquid crystal a mixture of at least two eigenmodes.Comment: 20 pages, 23 figures, 42 reference
