Sustainable management: a strategic challenge for a global minerals and metals industry

This paper refers to the concept of sustainable management as the management approach which efficiently integrates economic, environmental and social issues into the operations of the minerals and metals industries, with the aim of creating long-term benefits for all stakeholders, and securing the support, cooperation, and trust of the local community. Among many other issues, sustainable management deals with strategy, responsible project feasibility decisions, managing for operational efficiency, improved risk management, enhanced stakeholder relationships, and corporate reputation. Overall, it deals with seeking long-term competitive advantages through responsible management of environmental and social issues. An essential requirement for sustainable management is the corporate commitment to the values of sustainability, but this is not sufficient. Also essential is the development of a business culture where sustainability is a high professional and business value. Furthermore, an organizational structure with specific roles and integration mechanisms and adequate management systems are also required. Regarding business culture, a well-established business code is a necessary but an insufficient condition. Sustainable management relies on individual ethical conduct and trust to foster full participation of stakeholders and to encourage commitment among them. It allows decision making at appropriate levels in the organization and encourages individual risk-taking for continuous improvement. Without trust, social licence is not achievable. In this paper, the concept of sustainable management is introduced as the management approach that integrates a business culture, strong leadership and an organizational structure that strives for long term economics benefits through sustainability. To achieve this goal, sustainability must be vertically integrated at three organizational levels (corporate, divisional and operational) and three functional levels (strategy, planning and implementation)

Forensic Turning Points: Exhumations, Dignity, and Iconoclasm

Between 100,000 and 130,000 people were murdered during the war and dictatorship in Spain from 1936 onward. Thousands of bodies were buried in mass graves which were then monumentalized decades later. Since the year 2000, the commemorative practices surrounding the victims of the war and dictatorship changed radically: hundreds of exhumations took place and the rhetoric on human rights and dignity was generalized in the discourses. This phenomenon is associated with the idea of the “forensic turn”. However, the situation presents a double crisis: that of the popular forms of memorial based on honour and the monument, threatened by the scientific paradigm, and the lack of social recognition of the victims, of which the exhumations are not part of a judicial process, and how the ratios of identifications are low in the current model. Therefore, by means of an interdisciplinary approach to the context, this article contributes to the debate on the current crisis of the memory policies in the Kingdom of Spain demonstrating the limits of the “forensic turn” and the exhumation-based model promoted by the government of Spain

FIRST-GENERATION STUDENTS AND THE CHALLENGES FACED TOWARDS THEIR SENSE OF COMMUNITY AT A 4-YEAR UNIVERSITY

It takes a village to raise a child. Such simple words, yet the power it holds behind it is something not to be overlooked. The aspect of community, especially in a college campus setting, is something all students should have the opportunity to cherish. From K-12, we slowly begin to create our very own village, filled by various individuals that pertain to one\u27s own experience. These individuals guide us and grant us knowledge when needed most, but as we mature, and at some point, leave this village to begin our journey into adulthood, we find ourselves having to begin anew, and this can be a challenge as a First-generation student. The purpose of the following phenomenological qualitative study is to gain an in-depth understanding of the first-year experience of First-generation students and the way their experiences shaped their sense of being a part of the community at Rowan University

Estudio de un Sistema Informático que realice Intercambios Electrónicos de Datos para compartir Información controlada entre Entidades del Sector Marítimo Panameño

Este trabajo de investigación corresponde a un estudio para la propuesta de un sistema informático que realice intercambios electrónicos de datos (EDI) en procesos marítimos, principalmente refiriéndose a importaciones y exportaciones. La forma manual como se desarrollan los procesos en la actualidad genera grandes volúmenes de documentación física, que involucra procedimientos burocráticos, sellos y firmas cuya obtención generan tiempos de espera. Es de gran importancia erradicar la problemática expuesta, considerando que esta situación deja atrás a Panamá, impactando negativamente en sus relaciones comerciales con otros países.Considerando que el tiempo es un factor de relevancia en la productividad del sector, se debería reducir al máximo posible. Razón por la cual se propone la implementación de una plataforma digital capaz de compartir información controlada entre los actores involucrados.La Autoridad Marítima de Panamá (AMP) es la entidad idónea para dirigir mencionado sistema informático, donde los principales actores serían: puertos, navieras, importadores/exportadores, entidades gubernamentales (aduanas, AUPSA, migración, cuarentena, etc.), transportistas terrestres y agentes de carga. Compartir la información de una forma automatizada agilizaría el desarrollo de los procedimientos, garantizando un mejor manejo de la información.Al final del estudio el resultado obtenido es la comprobación de la hipótesis verdadera.Palabras claves: Procesos de import/export, Electronic data interchange (EDI), Ventanilla única, Port community systems, Integridad del sector marítimo

Food hub as an efficient alternative to sustainably feed the cities

International audienceCet article décrit la place des pôles logistiques alimentaire et leurs systèmes de distribution associés. Les déficiences des systèmes alimentaires qui ont conduit à l'émergence du concept des Food hubs et leur impact sur le développement urbain sont analysées. L'état de l'art sur le concept de Food Hub est présenté en premier lieu, puis une classification des différents types de Food hub est faite en se concentrant sur leur emplacement, zone d'influence et les acteurs impliqués. Enfin, il y un case d'étude sur le system d'approvisionnement de nourriture à Bogota, il y a une comparaison entre le modèle présenté et le concept du Food hub comme une alternative efficace pour nourrir la ville d'une manière durable

“PROPOFOL-FENTANIL VS PROPOFOL-KETAMINA PARA ANESTESIA EN MUJERES SOMETIDAS A LEGRADO UTERINO INSTRUMENTADO. HOSPITAL GENERAL DE JILOTEPEC I.S.E.M.”

Introducción: La combinación propofol con Fentanil es una técnica muy usada para procedimientos de legrado uterino instrumentado, en este estudio compararemos la combinación de Propofol-Ketamina y designaremos su eficacia. Métodos: Se realizó un estudio prospectivo, transversal y descriptivo del uso de la combinación de Propofol y Ketamina en 60 pacientes de ASA I y II que fueron propuestas para legrado uterino instrumentado describiendo si existen variaciones hemodinámicas y ventilatorias. Resultados: El aborto incompleto fue el diagnóstico más frecuente ya que se presentó en 35 pacientes, que corresponde al 58%, en segundo lugar el embarazo anembriónico con frecuencia de 13 que corresponde al 21.6 %, en tercer lugar el huevo muerto retenido con frecuencia de 7 pacientes que representan el 11.6%, en cuarto lugar el sangrado genital anormal con 3 pacientes que corresponde al 5% y en quinto lugar la retención de restos ovulares con 2 pacientes que represento 3.3%. Del total de pacientes estudiadas 13 fueron ASA I lo que corresponde al 21.66%, y 47 pacientes fueron ASA II lo que corresponde al 78.33 %. Todos los pacientes con propofol-fentanil requirieron ventilación asistida y solo en 2 casos con ketamina. Se observó mayor frecuencia de bradicardia en el grupo de propofol-fentanil que en el grupo propofol–ketamina. En ambos grupos el Ramsay inicial fue clase II, lo que significa que ninguna de las pacientes estudiadas presentó algún estado de choque que repercutiera en su estado de consciencia. Conclusiones: La ketamina es un nuevo medicamento, eficaz para proveer este tipo de sedación sin necesidad de asistencia ventilatoría y con menor repercusión hemodinámica

57 p.El interés de la investigación jurídica, radica especialmente que Chile en el ámbito penal, no cuenta con disposiciones especiales que regulen los derechos de los mapuches, sólo posee la ley Nº 19.253 mas conocida como ley indígena, que contiene normas especiales de los Procedimientos Judiciales. La realidad nos demuestra que existe diversidad cultural, y es tarea del Derecho Penal buscar soluciones efectivas, como la propuesta por el Profesor Raúl Zaffaroni denominado “error de comprensión culturalmente condicionado”. Igualmente existen más opciones dogmático penales que serán estudiadas–utilizando investigación documental bibliográfica, método sociológico y sistemático-, tal como “la no exigibilidad de otra conducta”. Characterization of the collection and distribution processes of bienestarina in Bogotá

International audienceThe production and distribution of Bienestarina to the vulnerable population of Colombia is one of the strategies of the "Colombian Institute of Familiar Wellness" (ICBF its acronym in Spanish) to fight malnutrition, especially among children. This article presents a first characterization of the supply chain for this product in Bogotá emphasizing collection and distribution logistics operations and identifying the actors in the chain, the currently applied regulations and the logistical requirements that leading the distribution of this complement to the different types of beneficiaries

Les paradoxes d’une prétendue révolution sociale

Etablir qu’il existe une révolution sociale grâce à laquelle apparaissent les droits sociaux, paraît être un exercice périlleux. D’une part, peu d’éléments objectifs déterminent de façon claire que la révolution s’entend depuis un sens qui serait unique et absolu, ce qui conduit souvent à confondre la révolution avec une simple évolution du droit. D’autre part, si la révolution se manifeste par le bouleversement total des logiques du statu quo ante, on peut s’interroger sur le fondement des droits sociaux dans le système iusphilosophique contemporain. En effet, il n’est pas certain que les droits sociaux se fondent sur un socle qui serait inhérent à une unique doctrine « sociale » déliée du libéralisme. Au contraire, il semble que les fondements contemporains de la question sociale en Occident répondent au socialisme républicain ou au solidarisme. Cela signifie que le libéralisme conserverait une place prépondérante comme moteur de l’action de l’Etat, surtout en matière politique, tout en s’atténuant dans la sphère économique afin de permettre l’inclusion de certains droits sociaux. Dès lors, l’affirmation de droits sociaux, loin de constituer une révolution sociale, pourrait être issue, paradoxalement, d’une réforme du libéralisme qui, cherchant à renouveler sa charge révolutionnaire, se trouve confronté à l’obligation de dynamiser et de faire évoluer ses fondements.Establishing that there is a social revolution by which the social rights appear seems to be a dangerous exercise. On the one hand, few objective elements clearly determine that the revolution comes from an absolute sense. This leads to confuse the revolution with the evolution of the law. On the other hand, the revolution is characterized by the total upheaval of the logics of the statu quo ante. This questions the foundation of social rights in the legal and philosophical contemporary system. Indeed, whether social rights are based on a pedestal, which is only inherent to a “social” doctrine, which itself is no longer linked to Liberalism is debatable. On the contrary, it seems that the contemporary foundations of the social question in the West are the answer to the Republican Socialism or the Solidarism. It means that the liberalism would keep a strong position as the driving force of the action of the State, especially in the political sphere, while subsiding on the economic sphere, to allow the inclusion of certain social rights. Therefore, the alterations of social rights would not necessarily establish a social revolution. But, paradoxically, they could stem from a liberalism reformed, which by trying to renew the revolutionary responsibility was in the obligation of revitalizing and developing its foundations.Decir que existe una revolución social à partir de la cual aparecen los derechos sociales parece ser una tarea complicada. Por un lado, pocos son los elementos objetivos que determinan de forma clara que la revolución se entiende desde un sentido que sería absoluto, lo que induce a confundir a la revolución con la evolución del derecho. Por otro lado, la revolución se manifiesta por el cambio total de lógicas del estatus quo, lo que interroga el fundamento de los derechos sociales en el sistema iusfilosófico contemporáneo. En efecto, no hay certeza que los derechos sociales se funden solo en una doctrina “social” desligada del liberalismo. Por el contrario, parece que los fundamentos contemporáneos de la “cuestión social” en Occidente responden al socialismo republicano o al solidarismo, lo que significa que el liberalismo conservaría un lugar preponderante como esencia motriz de la acción del Estado, sobre todo en materia política, al mismo tiempo que se auto-atenúa en la esfera económica con el fin de permitir la inclusión en el marco jurídico de ciertos derechos sociales. Así las cosas, las transformaciones que traen consigo a los derechos sociales estarían lejos de constituir una revolución social pero paradójicamente podrían ser el fruto de una renovación y de un nuevo dinamismo reformador del paradigma liberal
